    Some men have certain skills that are so special that it is almost a crime to leave them unused for a long time. Ranjith Shankar senses how most other directors in recent years have failed to untap Mammootty's amazing gift to tug at our heartstrings and makes the most use of it.

    VARSHAM works because Ranjith Shankar takes extreme care to shape up Venu ( the character Mammootty portrays) and makes his transformation from a self centered money lender to a big-hearted person entirely believable. It also works because Mammootty follows up this year's Munnariyippu with another stellar performance. Watch out for the scenes where he tells ' Poyi alle' to Mamta in hospital and ' Avanu vedanichitundaakumo' to Irshad later in his son's room - It is going to stay with you for long !

    10 -15 minutes of trimming in the second half might have helped Varsham further but it does not really matter. This one has its heart in the right place and its leading actor back to where he belongs - Go for it !
