Top Ten Hits Of 2007 Part I

In 2007 witnessed the releases of 87 films of which 18 were dubbed films mostly from Tamil and Telugu.

These dubbed films like Bunny, Happy, Challenge and Happy Days were big earners from an industry which found it hard to support less than a dozen of its language products.

1. Mayavi

The biggest among the last year's hits was Mayavi - the Mammootty starrer directed by Shafi. The movie which was released in the early months of February had a free run with out any competition till the arrival of Vishu films. Its sixty days of great collections made it the biggest grosser of the year. The film ran to hundred days in select theatres in all important metros. The film which had, Gopika, Manoj K Jayan, Sooraj Venjaranmoodu, Salimkumar, Vijayaraghavan in other important roles was special with the light hearted characterization of Mammootty in a comedy role, in the scripts of ace directors Rafi - Mecartin.

2. Hello

This was the share of Mohanlal in the four mega hits of 2007.The film also had, Parvathy Melton, Jagathy, Siddhique, Salimkumar and Sooraj Venjaramoodu in important characters which was told in the scripts of director Rafi - Mecartin. The film excelled in its racy narrative with slapstick comedies, becoming a clean family entertainer, with a directors turning a near to perfect combination with the master actor who has once again displayed his carefree style with elegance. Mohanlal's drunken comic act, the songs, handling of suspense and good cinematography were the other highlights of this movie, which had a good run even in the Onam season.

3. Chocolate

This was the first super success of Prithviraj as an independent hero. Ably supported by Jayasurya, Salimkumar, Roma, Samvrutha , Remya ,Sooraj, Venjaranmoodu and Rajan P Dev, the film instantly become the film for the campuses. This is the second mega hit by director Shafi in 2007, after Mayavi. The unique storyline of a boy coming to study in a women's college, by debutante Sachi-Sethu, gave all the space to integrate all the essentials for a commercial success. Shafi shows his real smart penchant for hit-craft which he applies brilliantly to hold the flick together and present it at a lightning pace towards a jovial finish. Chocolate is one of those films, that aren't as much about the ending, as it is about the journey, which is hilarious, heart-warming and pleasant. And yet the most important point is that the flick tremendously entertains. The remake rights of the film was sold at astronomical rates.

4. Vinodhayathra

Dileep has been more than happy with this solo mega hit in 2007. Director Sathyan Anthikkad continued his winning streak, once gain becoming the favorites of the family with his straight narrations, localized plots and quality family sentiments. The undercurrent of humor and placement of subtle humor dialogues that seems natural at the best and the smooth transitions in the proceedings is the highlight of this Sathyan movie as well. The film ran to 125 days and was the winner among the Vishu releases. Ilayaraja's hit songs and great performances from Meera Jasmine, Murali, Mukesh and Seetha was the other highlights of the movie.

5. Katha Parayumbol

This Christmas release starring Sreenivasan, and Mammootty in a lengthy cameo opened extremely well and shows signs for becoming a big hit. The film also has Mukesh, Meena, Sooraj Venjaranmoodu, Salimkumar and Innocent in good roles. Directed by debutante M.Mohanan, Sreenivasn's superior script and the great climax can be said to be the recipe of its success. The film is undoubtedly the Christmas winner in all terms.
2007 also saw the releases of at least ten films in the offbeat genre; like Sancharram, Ekaantham, Atheetham, Naalu Pennungal and Ottakaiyan, which got changed without any remarkable impulse in the B O charts. And the rest was those that were single handedly considered as the mediocre middle man cinema, whose success and failure were finalized at the box office.

When taking a flashback of 2007, the year created four mega hits in Mayavi, Hello, Vinodayathra and chocolate -one each to all the reigning stars of the present Malayalam cinema.

6. Arabikatha

Another realistic, political satire from Lal Jose in the scripts of Iqbal Kuttipuram was something that went good with the changing political atmosphere of the state. The film with Sreenivasan, Jayasurya, Samvrutha, Sooraj Venjaramoodu in important roles also revived the nostalgia and feel of the NRK's working in gulf countries. Extensively shot at U A E, the film was the upset winner of the year. The interesting thing about the film is its references to current issues -- corruption, the propaganda machinery, selling out to MNCs and the nexus between rulers and thugs. Iqbal Kuttipuram deserves credit for this well written taut screenplay. The good music tracks by Anil Panachooran - Biji Bal team and the cinematography by Manoj Pillai were the other highlights of this movie.

7. Chotta Mumbai

Directed by Anwar Rasheed, the film got up after it bad word of mouth in the first weeks. The festive mood of the plot, characters and the film set in the backdrop of Anglo Indian community of fort Kochy, was the major plus of this bug budget film. Landing on a mass formula movie, director Anwar Rasheed has steered the flick with clear dictation overpowering even the star equations. Truly a director's film, which make you just sit back, relax and enjoy, rather than searching for its logic. The technocracy direction and the cinematography by Azhagappan, well picturized songs by Rahaul Raj and the performances by Mohanlal, Siddhiue, Jagathy, Indrajith and Bhavana, helped the film to move over to become a good grosser.

8. Nadiya Kollapeta Rathri

Suresh Gopi's best run movie of the year was this murder mystery served in extra doses of three murders in a moving train. The film grabbed the audience in the opening weeks due to its difference in presentation. Directed and produced by ace filmmaker K Madhu, the film had Kavya Madhavan in a sparkling double role with good support from, Sooraj Venjaranmoodu, Shammy Thilakan, Siddhique and Rajan P Dev. Nadiya Kollapeta Rathri made an impact because of tightly written screenplay, the performances, the art direction by Gireesh Menon and the effective use of the moving train as a backdrop for some genuinely gripping sequences of investigation. The film was a mentionable hit in 2007.

9. Big B

This movie by Amal Neerad was designed and delivered just like English thrillers with spectacular audio and video designs and one liner. Despite its simplistic storyline, it managed to stir your soul, and transport you to something that you had never experienced in Malayalam industry. The film rocked in the box office in the early days but couldn't fetch a long run. Mammootty and the entire cast including Pashupathy, Nafisa Ali, Innocent, Mamtha, Bala, Manoj K Jeyan and co excelled in acting departments and the film offered the best in every technical section be it with editing by Vivek Harshan or cinematograpohy by Samir Thahir. The film can be reasonably considered as a good hit.

10. Inspector Garud/ Speed Track

Both these Dileep starrer were average earners in the box office, Released in the early months of 2007, both these film were able to run more than fifty days. Inspector Garud by Johny Antony have crass comedy but it catered more to the front benches and made an equal share from the B centers. Speed Track was a better product in sports genre, in which Dileep also did made a good lead as an athlete. The film which was expected to become a dumb squib surprised everyone with an intelligently planned plot, peppy songs, one-liners, a great performance from Dileep and the fine glossy looking package.

Gajala, Salimkumar and co supported the debutant director Jayasuriya in making this a decent affair. The other films that became average earners were Mohanlal starrer Shaji Kailas' film Alibhai, Sureshgopi's detective, and Naren's Panthayakozhy .The year end releases Rajasenan's Romeo and Rajbabu's Kangaroo will also make it to the status of average earners.. Even superstar films like mission 90 days and Rock N Roll was not able to open to good initials which is proving to be a crisis signal to the entire industry. The low prepublication and the lack of print publicity have resulted in bad fare of many movies that could have been break evens.

The major problem that the industry is facing is that apart from these 15 movies that may come to around 20 percent of the total releases, all the other movies couldn't cater to better audiences resulting in at least 130 crores of capital loss in Malayalam film industry. Many new producers are turning out to become one timer who resists making a try, a second time.

The original film in Malayalam that was also called "Thenkasi Pattanam" was a super success (275 days). It was a box office hit in Telugu ("Hanuman Junction" — 125 days) and is now being made in Kannada also.
