Krishnan (Dulquer Salmaan) has a reckless childhood, picking on fights, at the behest of his leader Balan (Manikandan). He strikes a bond with Balan’s younger brother Ganga (Vinayakan), as they indulge in criminal activities pretty early in their lives. The story is narrated in flashback, when Krishnan is coming back to his native land from Mumbai, where he is based right now. He had fallen in love with a girl named Anitha (Shaun Romy) and the various stages in their romantic journey is shown, as the story unveils. As they face setbacks and after realizing that they are being used by some wily businessmen for their own selfish needs, the gang members want to get out of their criminal activities. But they soon get to know that there is no way to come out of this trap. With delicious visuals by Madhu Neelakantan and good music, the film is strikingly real and genuinely engaging. Still, the settings and the looks of some of the characters remind one of the spectacular Brazilian crime drama City of God (2002). At close to three hours this one is a tad too long and the story becomes a bit predictable at certain points as well. But it is the brilliant performances that makes this film, absolutely gripping. Dulquer Salmaan sports various looks and that is a sheer delight to watch. The young hero has been experimenting with his roles recently and this one is an absolute treat for his fans. Vinayakan, with his rugged looks and his dialogue delivery with a peculiar Kochi accent, is superb. Among the rest of cast, Manikandan, Shaun Romy, Alancier and Soubin Shahir shines well. Kammaatippadam is essentially the long journey of a young man as his life gets out of track, as he helplessly watches it at some point of time. It’s a mixture of various emotions and the sad story of a population that we tend to forget as we crave for more luxuries, narrated in a disturbingly true manner. Don’t miss this one.
