South Korean tech giant Samsung on Wednesday launched a new tablet device, equipped with iris-recognition technology, aimed at government and enterprises in India. The Android-based tablet 'Galaxy Tab Iris' is priced at Rs 13,499. The tablet features a 7-inch screen, 1.2 Ghz quadcore processor, 1.5GB RAM, 8GB memory (expandable up to 200GB), 5MP rear camera and 3,600 mAh battery.

"The tablet can be used by agencies using Aadhaar as an authentication mechanism. It can be used for a variety of applications in banking, eGovernance services, etc," Samsung India Vice President Sukesh Jain told reporters here.

The India R&D team has made significant investments in biometric technology research and this product leverages Samsung's knowledge in hardware design, biometrics and security for a high speed scan, greater accuracy and high reliability, he added.
The company is in discussions with various government departments and corporates to deploy the devices at workplace, he said.

Currently, Samsung is focussing on selling the tablet to enterprise customers as it believes that iris-based authentication still has more 'assisted' usage. "We expect banking sector to be among the front runners in terms of adoption. Telecom service providers would also benefit from such a solution," Jain said.

TRAI Chairman R S Sharma said a lot of pilfering happen in government schemes as there is no way to authenticate the beneficiaries at a rural level and such a device that supports Aadhaar can be of help.

Ahead of the big OnePlus 3 launch in a virtual space station, the company has slashed the prices of the OnePlus 2, OnePlus One and OnePlus X. The price of the 64GB variant of the OnePlus 2 is now $299, the OnePlus One is now $249, and the OnePlus X Onyx variant is the cheapest at $199.

The launch price of the OnePlus 2 64GB was $389, the OnePlus One 64GB was $349, and the OnePlus X was launched at $249. There is no price cut announced for Indian users so far, but we can expect the new prices to trickle down soon - as the company has done in the past. We have contacted OnePlus about how soon we can expect India-facing price changes, and will update this story once we hear back. At the moment, the OnePlus 2 is being sold at Rs. 22,999 and Rs. 18,999 for the 64GB and 16GB respectively. The OnePlus One 64GB is available for Rs. 18,999, while the OnePlus X 16GB is being sold for Rs. 14,999.

In the meanwhile, OnePlus is expected to unveil the OnePlus 3 onJune 14. The company has announced that the event will be live streamed through a virtual space station, and even gave away 30,000 Loop VR headsets for free. The company claims that the event can be watched without the headsets as well. It will sell the Loop VR headset in India from June 3 to June 7 on Amazon India, the registration for which is now open.

Past leaks suggest that the OnePlus 3 will sport a 5.5-inch full-HD (1080x1920 pixels) display, and run on the Snapdragon 820 SoC. It will sport a 16-megapixel rear camera, and be accompanied by an 8-megapixel selfie camera. It should come in 4GB RAM/ 32GB inbuilt storage and 6GB RAM/64GB storage variants, and either pack a 3000mAhor 3500mAh battery. The OnePlus 3 is expected to see a major design overhaul, and will sport an all metal look.
