    Welcome here!
When you say Russian Indophiles, do they all watch malayalam movies? I have always thought Indian movies in Russia was limited to Raj Kapoor and Mithun Chakraborthy. Awaara and Disco Dancer!

I hadn't watched anything Indian since childhood, but once saw Guzaarish on some TV channel. And was amazed that Indian cinema could be something more than just "jimmi jimmi" (a song from Disco Dancer and a very typical joke about the industry abroad). I saw that movies could be about serious stuff with no singing/dancing guns and elephants. That actors could perform without overacting. And decided to watch something else. That's how I started to watch Bollywood. In Russia only a few people remember what movies are Mollywood or Kollywood or Tollywood. Indophiles here just call it "Southern". A lot of people watch Bollywood, but dislike Southern cinema. And I was among them. Why? Because people suggested to start from their favourite movies, and unfortunately all their suggestions were Tollywood's. And no changes there since 80s - dancing/singing with no reason, just heros but not actors with no acting skills, very stupid plots. Sorry if I hurt someone by saying this, but I haven't seen at least one good Tollywood movie. And as I didn't know there were many industries within the South, I decided that no way I would watch it again [IMG] After some time one girl on a Russian forum was talking about Southern movies, I told her about my "no way", and she suggested to give it one more chance, just try some other region. Guess what was the movie? It was Urumi she proposed. Historical genre is my favourite, so I agreed. And after the movie I started to google who these people were really capable to act (with some exceptions of course), what I could watch else. This is how it all started.

Now I watch Bollywood from time to time. Some movies like Guzaarish or Kurbaan. So not masala, more western/international stories [IMG] Love what Zoya Akhtar does. Usually such films become flops in India. But here is the funny thing - many your flops are quite popular among Russian indophiles, and on the contrary - many of your hits make us wonder how it's possible people watch such .... (a bad word here ))))

As for Malayalam... There were Prit's movies which I couldn't watch as they were stupid and absolutely bad. But quite often I enjoy what he does, and he is less Indian actor talking about his acting skills. More European style. No overact. The same with Indrajith. Or Farhan Akhtar (Bollywwod, yeah, I remember). Well, Dulquer acts like a western actor quite often. Fahad Fasil. And I like social movies you have. Paisa Paisa, for example. Loved it. Or Color of sky. Well, a lot of films, truly.

    merci!

    not all, I explained above

Well, maybe there are some older people who still watch Disco Dancer, but I don't know them. And truly to say, here is a huge prejudice about Indian cinema right because Disco Dancer or Dance Dance. Younger people don't want to give Indian cinema a chance making jokes about "jimmi jimmi", but I hope our TV channels will buy modern serious films so it can come to the end. For now, yes, the official level of Indian cinema in Russia is more like Disco Dancer - distributors don't buy your movies as not many people watch it. Thanks to jimmi jimmi.

are here any people who watch European cinema??? [IMG] I've been travelling a lot across India and never met even one such a person [IMG] Not sure it's a great idea to create a thread and sit there alone [IMG]
