At regular intervals there comes a movie which is set in Pollachi. There will be a fiery looking ‘gounder’ with a Malayali wife and their beautiful daughter, who will be waiting desperately to fall in love with the hero.

Likewise, when stories happen in Kerala-Karnataka border, there is no rules or logic as such. You should then be ready to all that is shown on screen. The villains can kill virtually anyone, including some cops, and whatever happens nobody really cares. Of course, until the hero sets his foot there.



The hero, in debutant director Nithin Renji Panicker’s Kasaba, is a Circle Inspector named Rajan Zachariah (Mammootty).

He is a chronic bachelor who is fearless and has women swooning over his ample charm.

From the opening shot the story revolves around prostitution and you even feel that almost every female character in the film is desperately seeking sex and nothing else. The hero swears just like that and most of the dialogues have double meaning tones.

There are some murders happening in the beginning of the story, involving a wily don turned politician Nambiar (Sampath) and his mistress, Kamala (Varalaxmi Sarathkumar), who runs a brothel.

Rajan gets his posting at the police station there and takes on the villains single handedly. He beats up every wrong doer in order to prove the murder case. In between there are scantily clad women gyrating their hips, fights, killings and heavy duty dialogues in plenty.

In the absence of a worthy script, the director is banking on style. The colour and the music are too loud. In all fairness, Nithin shows promise for sure, but things perhaps went a bit out of hand while adding too much masala for the masses.

The evergreen Mammootty looks dashing for his age and has come up with a dedicated performance. But the question is whether an actor of his stature and fan following should use this kind of profanities and suggestive lines, which can make you cringe.

Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, who did a mesmerizing performance in Tharai Thappattai, does her part earnestly but she has nothing much to do other than to yell her dialogues and keep an arrogant posture, most of the times. Sampath looks good and is effective as the baddie.

It is evident that Kasaba is meant to be a no holds barred entertainer. If you are fine about obscene dialogues and violence, this one could be a watchable fare for sure. And for the fans of Mammootty, this could be a fun ride!
