Sultan continued its phenomenal run on Sunday with another huge day with collections set to be around 39-40 crore nett and taking its extended five day weekend total to around 182 crore nett. This is averaging out to be around 36.5 crore nett a day over five days which in just incredible. The film has maintained over 35 crore nett for four of the five days in its run so far.



The way to put this into perspective is that only one film prior to Sultan had opened to more than 36.50 crore nett and this has averaged that much over five days. The growth on Sunday has come mainly from the areas that did not jump on Saturday. The very high level of collection on Saturday made huge Sunday growth hard.



The business of the film is fantastic all over and what is exceptional is the business in West Bengal, Mysore and Tamil Nadu Kerala which are the weakest for Salman Khan starrers but here all three have put up excellent numbers with the latter crossing Bajrangi Bhaijaan lifetime in five days.



The business on Sunday may turn out to be the highest single day ever and the first 40 crore nett breach in a day. It would be another huge achievement if day five is setting ALL TIME RECORDS.

The other day, I was reminiscing the BO records created by Amitabh Bachchan's films in the 1970s and 1980s. I distinctly recall, the film industry was dumbstruck as record after record was shattered, with Sr Bachchan's movies creating theatre, city and circuit records on Day 1, Day 3 and Week 1. The late Manmohan Desai -- who delivered a string of hits with Big B then -- described the Bachchan phenomenon aptly, when I interviewed him in 1981 [the very first interview of my career, in fact]: "Amit [Amitabh] is like Halley's Comet that strikes once in 70 years."

Similarly, Salman Khan is at the pinnacle of his career and it won't be erroneous to state that he's now ensconced on the throne that was once occupied by Bachchan Sr. With great power comes great responsibility, they say... Salman is well aware that he's the darling of the masses and is concentrating on movies that have something extra to offer than the usual masala. At the same time, he's ensuring that his legion of fans aren't disappointed. The last decade has been of utmost significant in Salman's career, since the actor has delivered a string of All Time Blockbusters [post DABANGG]. He is the Hit Machine. The Superstar. The Sultan of BO. The Pied Piper of Bollywood.

The BO performance of his new film SULTAN clearly indicates that 'Salmania' has gripped the nation. The 5-day business [Wednesday to Sunday] of his latest film reiterates the fact that there's no star bigger than Salman today. That's a fact, whether you like it or not.

Now let's analyse the reasons why SULTAN worked tremendously well at the ticket windows. The hysteria that this film generated prior to its release can easily be attributed to Salman's superstardom. The advance booking at plexes as well as single screens was terrific and the film, expectedly, opened to a mind boggling response on Wednesday [6 July]. Also, timing the release during the festive occasion of Eid meant SULTAN would reap a harvest at the BO initially. However, if the content matches the hype, it works as an icing on the cake and that's a key reason why SULTAN is having a dream run in the domestic as well as international markets. The audience feedback is fantastic and YRF is laughing all the way to the bank.

The 5-day weekend concluded yesterday [Sunday] and it will be interesting to see how SULTAN fares on weekdays -- from Monday to Thursday. As things stand today, Salman has two films in Rs 200 cr Club [KICK and PREM RATAN DHAN PAAYO] and one in Rs 300 cr Club [BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN]. SULTAN will easily cross Rs 200 cr mark in days to come, but will it cruise past Rs 300 cr mark? Most importantly, will it surpass the business of BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN and emerge Salman's biggest hit? It's a wait and watch situation right now!

 

Salman Khan’s Sultan was extraordinary yet again on its 5th day at the box office. The growth in business is decent (2 – 5 – 10%), which in itself is outstanding because the film was running at insanely high levels of occupancy throughout the weekend.

The fact that collections actually improved on Sunday is a big plus for the film and sets it up quite well for the test on Monday.

As per early estimates, Sultan has collected Rs 39 crore on Sunday at the box office. The film was record-breaking at multiplexes – with a majority of shows running to running to 100% occupancy from morning to night. There was a small dip late night, which tends to happen for most releases on Sunday.

More importantly, the first extended weekend of Sultan has delighted exhibitors all over the country. At several small centres, the film was sold out for the entire weekend with centres recording 100% occupancy for the entire weekend. These were centres that were running to very low occupancy over the weekend for most films this year.

The first extended weekend collections has crossed the 180 crore mark for the first time ever. The collections of films like Dhoom 3 and Bajrangi Bhaijaan was at this level for the entire first week.

Sultan was one of the fastest films to the 100 crore club, it was the fastest to 150 crore and it’ll now, most certainly, become the fastest to 200 crore too. Can it do so in 6 days i.e by tomorrow? That’s the big question. If it does manage to hold strongly from Monday to Thursday, Sultan will have very high chances of surpassing PK to become the highest grosser of all time. That’s the only feather missing in Salman Khan’s cap – ever since he began the decade of utter domination.
