PM Narendra Modi hits out at Congress over Parliament disruptions

KOLLAM: With Parliament rocked by constant disruptions, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today hit out at the Congress, accusing it of making a "mockery of democracy" and deciding to "destroy" the country as it cannot reconcile to the Lok Sabha poll defeat.

"Disrupt, Destruct and Demolish" is now the Congress slogan ignoring President Pranab Mukherjee's counsel for debate, dissent and decision for Parliament to function, he said in his blistering attack on the Congress, a fortnight after ..

PM Modi's gesture: Glass of water for AAP MP protesting against CBI raids

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday offered a glass of water to AAP member Bhagwant Mann, who was protesting in Lok Sabha against the CBI raids on Delhi government secretariat where Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal sits.
Mann, who was shouting slogans in the Well, felt uneasy and was apparently looking for water on the table of Lok Sabha secretariat officials who sit in the Well.

A smiling Modi offered him the glass of water kept on his table which the AAP member readily drank. The two exchanged smiles before Mann kept the glass on the table and the PM put the cover on it. Several BJP members thumped their desks at the PM's gesture.

Mann, thereafter, continued to raise anti-government slogans.

Mann, along with several Congress members, were protesting inside the Well soon after the Speaker disallowed their notices of motions to adjourn the Question Hour on various issues including role of Arunachal Pradesh Governor.

The Question Hour continued amidst the din.

The AAP member from Sangrur constituency in Punjab had been showing a bunch of papers to Speaker Sumitra Mahajan to attract her attention. At one point, the Speaker warned Mann and said his behaviour was "not good".

Mann had then moved to the other side of the Well and was standing near the Prime Minister's seat when the incident occured.

Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, who could not see what had happened as several of her party members were standing in the Well blocking her view, wanted to know what occured. She went into a peal of laughter after getting the details.

External Affairs Miniser Sushma Swaraj, seated in the front row along with the PM and other leaders, was also seen laughing.

While Mann and Sandhu Singh of AAP, as also some Congress members, were raising slogans in the Well, another party member Dharmveer Gandhi was standing on his bench holding a placard demanding renaming of Chandigarh airport after freedom fighter Bhagat Singh.

A furious Kejriwal had yesterday accused the Modi government of targeting him over a day-long CBI raid at the Delhi Secretariat.

World Bank is trending on Twitter; it's good news for PM Narendra Modi

New Delhi: Many of Twitter users must have been wondering why the hash tag World Bankwas featured as one of the top trends on Wednesday.

World Bank has been trending on Twitter since Wednesday morning as it has approved a whopping USD 1.5 billion loan for the Narendra Modi government's ambitious Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Campaign).

It's being seen as a major boost for the PM Modi's ambitious project to ensure all citizens in rural areas have access to improved sanitation and end the practice of open defecation by 2019.

The loan amount will be used for Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) Support Operation Project.

As per World Bank statistics, of the 2.4 billion people who lack access to improved sanitation globally, more than 750 million live in India, with 80 per cent living in rural areas. More than 500 million of the rural population in India continue to defecate in the open, suffering from preventable deaths, illness, stunting, harassment and economic losses.

"India has demonstrated extraordinary leadership in pursuing the ambitious SBM campaign and embracing the focus on behaviour to complement the construction of toilets," said Annette Dixon, World Bank Vice President for the South Asia Region.

Meetings with Modi, Swaraj had encouraging results: Nawaz Sharif

Beijing: Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday said his recent meetings with his recent meetings with his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj yielded "encouraging results" with both countries agreeing to resume the comprehensive bilateral dialogue.
Sharif said this during his meeting with Premier Li Keqiang in the central Chinese city of Zhengzhou where he briefed the Chinese leader on his recent meetings with Modi and Swaraj.

Sharif had met Modi last month at the Paris climate change summit and Swaraj at the Heart of Asia conference in Islamabad last week.

"The Pakistani premier apprised his Chinese counterpart of his recent meeting with Modi and Swaraj that have yielded encouraging results," said a press release issued by the Pakistani embassy here on the Sharif-Li meeting.

"Both countries have agreed to resume the comprehensive bilateral dialogue, which is a welcome development," Sharif said on the revival of the Indo-Pak talks.

During his meeting with Li on the sidelines of the 14th Heads of Government Council Meeting of the six-member Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), Sharif said that Pakistan has established a Special Security Division (SSD) to protect "our Chinese brothers" working in his country on various projects.

On the USD 45 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, Sharif said he was satisfied with progress of CPEC projects.

"Pakistan wants all the projects under CPEC to be implemented in a timely and efficient manner," he said.

Sharif said the progress achieved by Chinese takeover of the strategic Gwadar Port Free Zone is a good beginning for initiating the process of building the economic zone.

The Prime Minister said Pakistan valued SCO's role and was grateful that with China's support, Pakistan is being accepted as a full member of SCO.

On counter-terrorism and security issues, Sharif apprised the Chinese premier about military operation 'Zarb-e-Azb' and National Action Plan to fight terror that are being successfully implemented in Pakistan.

While expressing satisfaction over progress in CPEC, Li said that China will extend full support to the implementation of agreed projects and help Pakistan build its industrial capacity.

Sharif also extended an invitation to the Chinese premier to visit Pakistan.

PM Modi meets Chandy cabinet, discusses development

Thiruvananthapuram: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday evening met the Keralacabinet of Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and discussed many development issues related to the state.

The meeting was held at the technical area of the Thiruvananthapuram airport, just before Modi returned to Delhi after his two-day visit to the state.

Chandy, who was accompanied by 13 of his cabinet colleagues, expressed happiness over the outcome of the meeting.

"He (Modi) heard what we had to say about the demands of our state. We handed over a list of our demands. The meeting went off well," Chandy told reporters after Modi's departure.

The state's wish list included a new dam in lieu of the century-old Mullaperiyar dam.

Chandy also spoke to Modi about beleaguered rubber farmers in the state, who were facing a huge crisis after prices fell from Rs.250 a kg last year to less than Rs.100 now.

Among the other demands put up before Modi were the speeding up of the proposed Sabari railway line construction, declaring Sabarimala a national pilgrimage centre, issues concerning Coastal Regulation Zone guidelines, allocation from the price stabilisation fund for cash crops, allotting an AIIMS and upgrading cancer hospitals in the state.

Asked about being kept out of the R Sankar statue unveiling function attended by Modi, Chandy said it was not taken up because it was not the right time. He said the issue will be taken up later.

After the 15-minute meeting with the Kerala cabinet, Modi was seen off by Governor P. Sathasivam, Chandy and others.
