She's played his Leela, and his Mastani.

Now, news reports state that Deepika Padukone will also play Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Rani Padmini, in his next film, Padmavati.

The news came amid much speculation over who Bhansali would cast in his magnum opus.

On just 27 June, Deepika had been asked if she was teaming up with herRam-Leela and Bajirao Mastanidirector once again for his magnum opus. However, Deepika merely confirmed that she will begin shooting her next Hindi film in September this year, without naming the movie. The actress has wrapped up the shoot of her Hollywood project with action star Vin Diesel xXx: The Return of Xander Cage.



The shoot of Padmavati is expected to begin in September as well - making industry watchers conclude that this was the project Deepika was referring to.

Incidentally, rumours that Bhansali is repeating his other muse - Ranveer Singh - in Padmavati, are also doing the rounds.

If the casting is finalised, Ranveer will play Allaudin Khilji to Deepika's Rani Padmini. Masaan actor Vicky Kaushal is pegged to play Padmini's husband, Rana Ratan Singh.

It was in May this year that talk of Bhansali's Padmavati project began. AMid-Day article quoted sources close to the auteur as saying that he wanted to take on a subject other than that of tragic, star-crossed lovers for his next.Padmavati - with its historical tale of Allaudin Khilji's obsession with the Mewar queen Padmini, and her self-immolation - seemed the perfect subject for Bhansali. In 2008, he had directed an opera based on the subject, in Europe.

Details of the project have been kept tightly under wraps. Even Deepika's casting was inadvertently revealed by Shreyas Puranik, the music composer Bhansali has signed on for the project, on Twitter. Pinkvilla carried a pieceon the same, although Puranik's tweet was later deleted.

It has also been reported that Prakash Kapadia, who earlier scriptedBajirao Mastani, will write the script for Padmavati.

Will Hrithik Roshan replace Ranveer Singh in Padmavati?


We all were excited to watch real-lovebirds Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh come together for the third time on the big screen and yet again for Sanjay Leela Bhansali. However rumours are strong that Ranveer Singh is not going to be roped in to play Alauddin Khilji in Padmavati. Reason: According to sources, the actor asked SLB for a narration and that didn’t go down too well with the maverick. SLB is now said to be thinking of other actors to play Alauddin Khilji. Now according to a leading daily, it’s said that SLB first approached Shah Rukh Khan, but the actor cannot afford to devote a 200 day schedule for Padmavati. Now the director has approached Hrithik Roshan and it’s yet to be confirmed if the actor will agree to play the lead.

Hrithik Roshan and Sanjay Leela Bhansali have worked together in 2010 with Guzaarish. The film might have been a damp squib at the box-office, but Guzaarish is counted as one of the finest performances by Hrithik Roshan. Also if Hrithik gives his nod for Padmavati, then it will be the first time pairing for Hrithik-Deepika on the big screen.
