Plot: Exactly what was promised in the slick trailer that raised our expectations about the movie. Jayaraman, a blind lift operator at an apartment complex becomes a witness to a murder. The police doesn't believe him because of his percieved "disability" and his statements are naturally frowned upon. Then ensues an intellectual tug of war between the killer and Jayaraman, which forms the crux of the movie.

There is no suspense as such, the killer is revealed pretty early in the narrative and even before that we can deduce many of the things that are going to come our way as the movie unfolds. It is exactly this lack of a suspense element that made the games between the hero and villain even more crucial in engaging the audience. Unfortunately it blows hot and cold, with scenes that are stretched beyond necessity. Instead of a crisp, to the point narrative, we are served some sequences that would have had no impact on the end result even if they were edited out of the film. There are scenes that really captures our attention, but mixed with some other not so inspiring stuff. A parallel I can draw to is Thuppakki, where there is no real suspence as such but the villain and hero go blow for blow all the way till the end, managing to keep us engaged. Oppam tries to achieve something similar, but not with similar degree success.

    Performances

Obviously Mohanlal. Third consecutive movie in which he has delivered what we have come to expect of him. Even Jayaraman is a bit of a superhuman - he sings, he fights, he does most things better than people with normal eyesight. But at the same time, he does this all without the usual mannerisms that has been with Lalettan ever since he was accepted as a demigod on screen. Even while playing a commoner he has been burdened by the stale and oft repeated cliche symbolism that is associated with "normal" people. We get everything that we have come to expect of him, but nothing that we are used to. A refershingly new performance and a fantastic portrayal of a blind man without the usual staring at the sky and crying about his misfortune.

Mamukoya and the guy who played the other security guard did well. Especially Mamukoya. Almost all the good comedy scenes involve him and his numbers were well received by the audience. Chemban also made the audience laugh and Vimala Raman made us cry. Such an irritating performance just before the interval block that you are left thinking about her and nothing much that preceded that scene. Everyone else was apt for their roles.

Music is a highpoint. Didn't particularly enjoy the lyrics, but they are catchy tunes. And kudos to Priyadarshan who got them out of the way pretty early in the narrative. BGM by Ron Yohann was fantastic and I have become a fan. I thought there were shades of Kali BGM at places but I really loved the work. Drishyam reference actually worked and so did Antony's cameo. The fight had the desired effect and even the multi audience were cheering and applauding.

Oppam is a comeback for Lalettan the actor in malayalam and not so much Priyan the filmmaker. The movie drags a lot and that is ultimately down to him, his writing. Visually brilliant, yet you do feel that this plot could well have been executed better by someone else, who is at the top of their game right now.

    Rating : 2.5/5. Average fare.

Verdict : Sure superhit, crowd response was very good.

P.S.: I am not trying to say Thuppakki and Oppam are similar movies. Just that they had similar challenges to keep the audience engaged.
