After collecting Rs. 80 crores a few days ago, we had predicted that Chiyaan Vikram’s latest release, Iru Mugan would soon be crossing the 100-crore threshold at the box-office, and that’s exactly what has happened. Its combined business from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Kerala along with minor contributions from the rest of India has gone past 90 crores while the remaining sum has been taken care of from its overseas collection.



With the Anand Shankar film showing no signs of slowing down, most theaters have retained its shows in the second week, giving Iru Mugan another open week at the box-office. Also, the makers have reinvigorated its promotional campaign through massive print ads in light of Dhanush’s much-awaited and Vijay Sethupathi’s Aandavan Katalai releasing this Thursday and Friday.


At this pace, it’s only a matter of days till the Vikram-Nayanthara-Nithya Menen starrer breaches the 100-crore mark in the domestic market, too. Where it goes from there will depend on how Thodari andAandavan Katalai perform over the weekend. Still, the film has done more than enough to reaffirm Vikram’s stardom after the failure of his last outing, 10 Endrathukulla. More importantly, it’ll finish the year as a bona-fide blockbuster and in all probability, as the third-highest grosser of Tamil cinema after Rajinikanth’s Kabaliand Ilaya Thalapathy Vijay’s Theri.

 

Trailing only Superstar Rajinikanth’s Kabaliand Ilaya Thalapathy Vijay’s Theri, Chiyaan Vikram’s Iru Mugan is fast growing into the kind of monster at the box-office that would make its cast, makers, and investors very happy. Having collected Rs. 80 croreworldwide so far, of which a massive Rs. 30-35 crore has come from Tamil Nadu alone, the Anand Shankar film is showing no signs of slowing down, particularly with the festivities of Onam engulfing the South, and another open week in cinema halls.

Speaking about the film’s sensational box-officer performance, its Tamil Nadu distributor, Auraa Cinemas’ Mahesh was quoted at Iru Mugan’s success meet saying, “After Kabali and Theri, Iru Mugan is the third biggest hit of 2016. We have released the film in 450 screens and all the theater owners are willing to continue screening the film till third week.”



At this rate, there should be nothing standing in the way of the Vikram-Nayanthara-Nithya Menen starrer from crossing the 100-crore threshold at the box-office. It’ll struggle to come close to Theri’seventual cume of Rs. 175 crore, but it does enough to reaffirm Vikram’s stardom after the failure of his last outing, 10 Endrathukulla. Moreover, it’ll finish the year as bona-fide blockbuster and also as the third-highest grosser of Tamil cinema, with no other film offering a realistic chance of surpassing its final collections.
