RIL to finally officially launch Reliance Jio on December 27th

For all of our readers who have desperately been asking for the official launch date of Reliance Jio, we finally have some good news. Reliance Industries Limited, in an official mail to its employees said that it will launch its telecom venture- Jio at a launch event in Mumbai on 27th December 2015, the launch will also mark founder Dhirubhai Ambani’s birthday on December 28. The launch will be hosted by Bollywood star feature Shah Rukh Khan, who will be joined by music maestro A.R Rehman.

The company will launch Jio services to its employees first, the mail said. “We want every member of our family to participate whether in person or virtually through a Jio telecast beamed live to over 1000 locations across India,” Mukesh and Nita Ambani, said in the mail.

Reliance Jio is the only pan-Indian 4G operator, and holds the highest amount of liberalised spectrum among telecom operators which can be used for deploying any technology for mobile services. It has a total of 751.1 MHz spectrum across 800 MHz, 1800 MHz and 2300 MHz bands, and plans to provide seamless 4G services using LTE in 800 MHz, 1800 MHz and 2300 MHz bands through an integrated ecosystem.

The telco recently started beta-testing 4G network. It also launched a total four smartphones aptly named- LYF Water 1, LYF Water 2, LYF Water 3 and LYF Earth 1, under the Lyf brand. Chinese handset maker ZTE is currently making VoLTE-ready 4G smartphones for Reliance Jio’s Lyf handset brand, a report by Credit Suisse revealed.

Kerala outgrows metro cities in telecom revenue growth

As per data released by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Kerala recorded the maximum revenue growth of 14 percent in the period between April and June of 2014 and AMJ 2015. The revenue of the state increased from Rs 1878.44 crore in the AMJ quarter of 2014 to 2135.4 crore in AMJ 2015.

Idea seems to be the biggest beneficiary of this growth in the Kerala circle with the company recording maximum growth of 20.6 percent. The company’s revenue increased from Rs 704.93 crore in AMJ 2014 to Rs 887.87 crore in AMJ 2015. Vodafone is at second spot in the circle with the company’s revenue increasing from Rs 450.77 crore in AMJ 2014 to Rs 513.14 crore in AMJ 2015. Kerala is a category `B’ circle and has a tele-density of around 95%.

Overall, the telcos recorded an increase of 6 percent with revenue increasing from Rs 44736.06 crore in AMJ 2014 to Rs 47627.39 crore in AMJ 2015. Significantly, the top three telcos outgrew the market during this time frame. While both Bharti Airtel and Vodafone India recorded an increase of 7%, Idea Cellular recorded an increase of 17% in its revenue during this time period.

Kerala circle was followed by Karnataka (category `A’ circle), which recorded a growth of 11% with revenue increasing from Rs 3302.6 crore in AMJ 2014 to Rs 3662.2 in AMJ 2015. Bharti Airtel is the clear leader in this circle with a revenue of Rs 1517 crore in AMJ 2014 increasing to Rs 1774.69 crore in AMJ 2015. Bharti is followed by Vodafone, which recorded a revenue of Rs 522.76 crore at the end of AMJ 2015.

Though Kerala and Karnataka have recorded the highest revenue growth in the given time period, they are not the highest revenue generating circles for the service providers. With revenues of Rs 3933.51 crore in AMJ 2015, Maharashtra is the highest revenue generating circle for the service providers. Maharashtra is closely followed by Delhi, which generated revenue of Rs 3858.58 crore in AMJ 2015. Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Mumbai are the other top revenue generating circles for the Indian telcos.

On the other hand, Himachal Pradesh recorded the least revenue of Rs 312.33 crore in AMJ 2015, followed by North East, which has a revenue of Rs 495.51 crore in the same time period. Orissa, Assam, and Jammu & Kashmir are other circles with least revenue in AMJ 2015.[IMG]
Interestingly, circles like Assam and J&K, which recorded a low revenue growth, ended up with high subscriber growth in the same time frame. For instance, Assam’s subscriber base grew by 13 percent and Jammu & Kashmir’s subscriber base increased by 16 percent. This increase in the subscriber base was, unfortunately, not matched by a corresponding increase in revenue.

“We started our 4G roll-out in India beginning with Kochi and are now delighted to launch our high-speed 4G services in Thiruvananthapuram that will give customers the power to experience the most advanced wireless broadband experience available across the globe today,” Suresh Kumar, Operations Director –South, Vodafone India said.

Running on the efficient 1800 MHz band, the network will enable Vodafone 4G customers to access internet via mobile with speeds across a range of smart devices including Mobile Wi-Fi, the company said. Vodafone said that its 4G service in Thiruvananthapuram is built on a strong fibre backhaul, and is supported by its own 3G services on a network of 2100 MHz, making Vodafone the first telecom operator in Kerala to offer 2G/3G/4G services on its own radio technology.

Vodafone 4G services can be readily accessed from 4G enabled handsets offered by leading smartphone manufacturers, including Apple, Samsung, Micromax, Microsoft, Lava and Xolo available across the country. Here’s why Kerala has become a new playground for 4G players

Vodafone started its 4G innings in India by launching its LTE service in Kochi last week. Just a week later, the company has added Trivandrum to its 4G LTE map, and will soon launch those services in Calicut. Kerala is getting this attention even though more lucrative metro cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, and Bengaluru are still awaiting 4G services.

Why did Vodafone chose Kerala over metro cities?
Vodafone launched 4G LTE services in two cities in Kerala within a span of two weeks. If you are wondering why the company chose Kerala, their press release points out the following reasons.

    • Ranked #1 in India in terms of Human Development Index
    • Ranked as second most urbanised state in India
    • Smartphones growing at over 65 percent YoY
    • Data consumption growing at over 80 percent YoY
    • Data Revenue growing over 75 percent annually
    • Kerala has globally-aware and tech-savvy customers
Apart from the reasons officially stated reasons, we believe that Vodafone choose Kerala as it was much easier and faster to roll out 4G network there. Compared to big metro cities, Kochi and Trivandrum are relatively small in terms of geographic area and population.

Vodafone was able to rollout its 4G network in a short span of six months after the official announcement and technically met its deadline of December 2015. As per the latest reports, Phase 1 rollout of 4G networks in Kerala, Karnataka, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Delhi will be completed by March 2016.

First circle in India to have two 4G operators and four by 2016

Idea Cellular rules the data market in Kerala, thanks to its vast 3G network. Neither Vodafone nor Airtel could challenge Idea’s strong position as they lack 3G spectrum in the circle. However, Airtel was the first operator to launch 4G service in Kerala, which is now available in four cities. Airtel was not seen as an immediate threat to the market leader Idea as it lacked more efficient 900MHz spectrum for 2G service, and was positioned fourth behind BSNL in the circle.

Vodafone comes packed with double power of 4G and 3G. The company is simultaneously deploying 3G network alongside 4G network. Vodafone, who is already positioned at the second best spot in the circle, wants a larger pie of premium data market.

Idea Cellular-dominated 3G market is now being challenged by 4G service from Airtel and Vodafone. To prevent the erosion of its high ARPU data subscribers, market leader Idea is readying its own 4G network. With Idea 4G network going to be live soon, Kerala is the only state in the country to have two 4G players, and it will soon get its third 4G operator. After the launch of Jio 4G service sometime next year, the circle will have four strong 4G players.

Kerala is the premium data market with five 3G and two 4G operators

It is evident that people in Kerala prefer 3G over 2G. The high-smartphone penetration in the circle has created a huge demand for 3G data. Idea, which has 80 percent 3G coverage in the circle, has highest amount of 3G users. The second biggest 3G player is BSNL, which has covered 60% of the circle. BSNL is continuously expanding its 3G footprint in the circle to catch up with Idea. While Idea is set to start its second innings in the premium data market with 4G services, BSNL still hasn’t made any solid plans for 4G service rollout.

While all the big players are ready with 3G and 4G services, the three small players – Reliance Communications, Tata DoCoMo, and Aircel – may not survive the 4G storm. Reliance Communications may bank on Reliance Jio for launching 4G through ICRA or use MTS spectrum for 4G service after the said merger. Tata DoCoMo, which already failed to expand its 3G network beyond a few cities, may not survive in a premium data market like Kerala. Aircel, which scaled down the operation in the circle, will mostly likely exit the circle soon after selling its 2G and 3G spectrum to others.
