Top 5 Actors in Bollywood – Box office battle

There has been a lot of discussion in the comments section as to who the Top 5 actors in Bollywood are at the moment. Most in the Singh Is King Box office collection topic were of the opinion that Akshay Kumar post Singh is King has gone past Shahrukh Khan as the King of Bollywood.

So we decided to do some research on the Top 5 actors in Bollywood and their last 5 movies. The actors included in the battle are Shahrukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, Hrithik Roshan, Aamir Khan and Salman Khan.

The results were quite unexpected. A few things before we give you the numbers.

Some points to remember are, actors with more releases in recent times (Post 2006) have an advantage over actors whose movies released in say 2003. That is because of the mutliplexes that have come up all over the country and also the increase in the number of prints.

So Akshay Kumar has a much bigger advantage over Aamir Khan as Aamir’s 5th movie Dil Chahta Hai released in 2001, when there were hardly any multiplexes. Also dont forget the inflation!

    Here are the number.

    5. Salman Khan – Salman Khan is at Number 5. We havent taken God Tussi Great Ho into count as it has just released last week and its final gross is awaited. He mainly suffers because of Marigold, as it did less than 1 crore of business in India! Salman has just one Blockbuster i.e Partner.

    • Jaan-E-Mann (2006) – 27 crores – Flop
    • Babul (2006) – 17 crores – Flop
    • Saalam-e-Ishq (2007) – 24 crores – Flop
    • Partner (2007) – 62 crores – Blockbuster
    • Marigold (2007) – 1 crore – Disaster
    Total – 131 crores
Average – 26.2 crores per movie.

    4. Aamir Khan – Aamir Khan although at a huge disadvantage is at Number 4. Imagine if Dil Chahta Hai had released today? It would have grossed atleast a minimum of 50 crores at the box office. Still since his come back the perfectionist has 2 Superhits and 1 Blockbuster to his credit.

    • Dil Chahta Hai (2001) – 16 crores – Hit
    • Mangal Pandey (2005) – 29 crores – Average
    • Rang De Basanti (2006) – 51 crores – Super Hit
    • Fanaa (2006) – 53 crores – Super Hit
    • Taare Zameen Par (2007) – 61 crores – Blockbuster
    Total – 210 crores
Average – 42 crores per movie.

    3. Shahrukh Khan – Has been affected big time due to the failure of Paheli. It didnt even get a face saving opening at the box-office and did just 13 crores. Rest of his movies have done well. KANK and Don bearly managed to go on to be hits. Chak De and Om Shanti Om were blockbusters.

    • Paheli (2005) – 13 crores – Flop
    • Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna (2006) – 46 crores – Above Average to Hit
    • Don (2006) – 50 crores – Hit
    • Chak De India (2007) – 64 crores – Blockbuster
    • Om Shanti Om (2007) – 87 crores – Blockbuster
    Total – 260 crores
Average – 52 crores per movie.

    2. Akshay Kumar – Now this was a real toughie. But we decided to push Akshay Kumar down to second due to several reasons. He is the only star to not have a single solo ‘Blockbuster’ to his credit (Welcome was a multistarrer with Anil Kapoor, Paresh Rawal and Nan Patekar). Although we have included Singh Is King, it has not completed its complete run at the boxoffice. We had to predict the total nett gross of Singh Is Kinng to 72 crores (44 crores in week one is confirmed + 18 crores in week 2 is also confirmed + 6 crores in week 3 and about 4 crores in the rest of the weeks is a prediction). The other reason for placing him at second is he is the only actor who has the advantage of every movie releasing Post – 2006. No release in the Pre multiplex era of India Cinema.

    • Heyy Babyy (2007) – 52 crores – Super hit
    • Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007) – 54 crores – Super hit
    • Welcome (2007) – 76 crores – Blockbuster (Multistarrer)
    • Tashan (2008) – 31 crores – Flop
    • Singh Is King (2008) – 72 crores – Hit to Super hit
    Total – 285 crores
Average – 57 crores per movie.

    1. Hrithik Roshan – By far the youngest actor in the list, Hrithik Roshan by pure box office numbers of India, tops although by a very close margin. 2 solo blockbusters (KMG, Krrish), 1 multi star Blockbuster (Dhoom 2) and 1 Super hit (Jodha Akbar). His only failure in the last 4 years has been Lakshya which did average business at the boxoffice. A great comeback after about 6 failures in a row after Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai.

Hrithik also has two movies pre 2006 which is a disadvantage.

    • Koi Mil Gaya (2003) – 44 crores – Super Hit
    • Lakshya (2004) – 23 crores – Average
    • Krrish (2006) – 66 crores – Blockbuster
    • Dhoom 2 (2006) – 86 crores – Blockbuster
    • Jodhaa Akbar (2008) – 63 crores – Super Hit
    Total – 282 crores
Average – 56.4 crores per movie.

The whole list might change when Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and Chandni Chowk To China release in December. SRK could make it to the top if Rab Ne works big time. How Chandni Chowk fares will also be interesting. Hrithik’s kites releases in the summer of 2009 and there is news that it could be sold for 100 crores if not more. Aamir Khan’s Ghajini too releases this year end and is expected to create boxoffice history.

We will post an update here after all the 3 movies; Rab Ne, Chandni Chowk and Ghajini release.

Note – These figures are only of how the movies fared at the Indian Box-office. Shahrukh Khan is the undisputed king of the overseas box-office. Akshay Kumar and Hrithik Roshan come a close second and third.

Why Aamir Khan is uniquely different

Note: Old article, first published on November 9 2012 (before the release of Talaash), republished on 31st December 2014.

A very popular saying goes like ‘Winners don’t do different things, they do things differently’.

There are many who claim to be different but very few actually are. They don’t follow the conventional routine path rather discover their own way through immense self belief and confidence. When someone chooses a less trodden path pretending to be different, there is a very thin line between confidence and arrogance which should not be crossed and that is possible only with a highly secured and determined mindset.

Slow And Steady: Away from the public eye for too long had always been considered negative in showbiz as it is equivalent to risking your stardom. When Aamir Khan made his debut in 1988, popular Bollywood stars used to work in multiple shifts and they had a major release every 2-3 months. Deciding to work on one movie at a time was a bold but equally determined step as his experience of working in multiple projects simultaneously wasn’t satisfying and fulfilling. Learning quickly from mistakes and rectifying them perfectly is the quality of a genius. Today, 15-20 years down the line, we see many actors following the same route.

Do Awards Matter? Awards, apart from being a motivational factor, are recognition of one’s work. But as seen over the years, the list of winners decided by Jury cannot be justified completely. Aamir took yet another tough step to boycott all the award functions when all his counterparts considered them as a matter of pride and prestige. With each passing year we have seen that the standard and quality of all the Indian Movie Award functions is deteriorating and most of them seem to be pre-decided.

Movies –Just Time Pass? Indian cinema is always meant for 3 things – Entertainment, Entertainment and Entertainment. Aamir has a firm belief that people who come to watch his movies for entertainment will also follow him on serious issues. And hence we have seen some cult, landmark and path breaking movies from him. Lagaan, Dil Chahta Hai, Rang De Basanti, Taare Zameen Par and 3 Idiots are treasures of today’s Cinema. For those who think he is too serious to do routine Bollywood romantic or action masala roles, should watch Fanaa and Ghajini. It seems the day is not far away when his name will have complete monopoly in the list of ‘Must Watch Indian Movies’.

TV – An Idiot Box – Oh Really? Big B’s KBC started the trend of all big stars moving towards the small screen. Top stars can now be seen regularly on TV as either hosts or judges of time-pass entertainment shows based on games, reality, dance, stunts, cooking, or singing. Along with the massive visibility through sky-high TRPs, there is huge money to fill the pockets. Aamir realized the power and potential of television, undertook an extensive research with his creative team and presented Satyamev Jayate. The show had such a massive impact that Aamir was invited to address the Parliament. Such was his involvement with the show that he postponed the date of his upcoming release Talaash.

Movie business has grown manifolds in the past few years and a good initial weekend almost guarantees a success today. As a result we have seen almost all the stars go all out to promote their movies. Aamir left no stone unturned in promoting Ghajini and 3 Idiots with his unique gimmicks. Promotion has become a key aspect of movie making now and with every big release, makers are coming up with a different marketing strategy.

No wonder then that all eyes of trade are now on Aamir’s next release Talaash. The promos are very well chalked out and are slowly raising the curiosity around the flick. But strangely much to everyone’s surprise, this time Aamir has not resorted to the promotional blitzkrieg. Is he avoiding over expectations? Is he waiting for the Diwali releases? Is he relying on Word Of Mouth? Knowing Aamir Khan, the reason can be any of the above or something even weirder. Yet, he invariably ensures he is in the news before his movie’s release.

    Way to go Aamir Khan!

Top Actors in Bollywood: April 2016

    12 min read

Now that Sidharth Malhotra’s Kapoor & Sons, Arjun Kapoor’s Ki & Ka and Shah Rukh Khan’s FAN are nearing the end of their runs, we are updating the list of Top Actors in Bollywood. We also highlight how the domestic box office is quickly becoming a two-man industry, because they (Aamir and Salman) are the ones who are holding the big festive dates.

Since there are no major releases in May, the next update will be after the release of Housefull 3. Tiger Shroff won’t be included because the minimum number of films to qualify is 3.

    Some points:

    • The list would be based on the net box office collections of an actor’s last five movies. For younger actors, the minimum number of films is 3.
    • Only lead roles would be considered. Cameos, special appearances and guest appearances won’t be taken under consideration.
    • Dated movies that released before 2007 have not been considered.
    • Only domestic box office collections is being taken into account. Collections from all regional versions have been taken into considering as this list is for the top actors in India and regional language releases affect Hindi business in their respective states. For example, Tamil version will affect business of Hindi version in Tamilnadu / Kerala circuit.
    Top Actors In Bollywood 2016
    [IMG]

Rank 1 Aamir Khan: The domestic box office for Bollywood has now become a two-man industry with Aamir and Salman dominating it. They are the only two actors to deliver 300 crore plus grossers and the contribution of their last 5 films is more than Rs 1000 crore – which also means, they average more than 200 crore per film! The rest have a lot of catching up to do, both in terms of major grossers and the hold over the major festive weekends – Eid, Diwali and Christmas – which is going to be crucial to sustain their stardom and aura in the next few years.

    • PK – 341 cr
    • Dhoom 3 – 285 cr
    • Talaash – 93 cr
    • 3 Idiots – 202 cr
    • Ghajini – 116 cr
    • Next film – Dangal (Christmas 2016)
    • Total – 1037 crore (Average per film: 207.4 cr)

Rank 2 Salman Khan: The megastar is at the peak of his super-stardom and the fact that he does more films than Aamir, gives him an edge over his ‘perfectionist’ friend. His next big release is ‘Sultan’, which would have to collect Rs 159 crore or more, for Salman to top the ranking once again. Unless the film disappoints big time content-wise, Rs 160 crore could possibly be the first week collections of the Ali Abbas Zafar directed film – i.e assuming it gets a solo release.

    • Prem Ratan Dhan Payo – 213 cr (including regional versions)
    • Bajrangi Bhaijaan – 321 cr
    • Kick – 233 cr
    • Jai Ho – 112 cr
    • Dabangg 2 – 154 cr
    • Next film – Sultan (Eid 2016)
    • Total – 1033 crore (Average per film: 206.6 cr)

Rank 3 Shah Rukh Khan: FAN has been a major disappointment at the box office, because of which an outstandingly consistent career is showing signs of slowing down. His fan-following is still one of the biggest, because the opening day of a songless film like ‘FAN’ was still close to Rs 20 crore net on Day 1. Happy New Year was record-breaking and Dilwale was huge too. But it’s the neutral audience that aren’t coming out in big numbers to watch his films. His choice of films has disappointed a lot of people, which is obvious from the fact that his last few films have all carried mixed to negative word-of-mouth.

With uncertainty around the release date of his next film Raees, it remains to be seen if Shah Rukh can come back strongly with the Rahul Dholakia directed film. Shah Rukh currently averages 157 crore per film.

    • FAN – 85 cr (expected)
    • Dilwale – 148 cr
    • Happy New Year – 204 cr
    • Chennai Express – 227 crore
    • Jab Tak Hai Jaan – 121 cr
    • Next film – Raees (still officially scheduled for Eid)
    • Total – 785 crore (Average per film: 157 cr)

Rank 4 Hrithik Roshan. The gap between Shah Rukh and Hrithik is at its lowest. Assuming that Raees releases after Mohenjo Daro, the Hrithik Roshan film would have to collect Rs 145 crore or more for Hrithik to beat SRK at the domestic box office. While the gap between the Top 2 and the rest has widened, the gap between No 3 and No 4 has narrowed quite significantly after the release of Dilwale and FAN.

Hrithik’s average of 134 crore is fantastic and comparable to the Khans even though he doesn’t always get to release his films during Eid, Diwali or Christmas.

    • Bang Bang – 181 cr
    • Krrish 3 – 244 cr
    • Agneepath – 122 cr
    • Zindagi Naa Milegi Dobara – 93 cr
    • Guzaarish – 32 cr
    • Next film – Mohenjo Daro (August 12)
    • Total – 672 cr (Average per film: 134.4 cr)

Rank 5 Ranveer Singh: One film called Bajirao Mastani has changed Ranveer Singh’s life. From a career that appeared to be faltering after the release of Kill Dil, Ranveer has risen from Rank 10 to the Top 5, not only beating stalwarts like Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn, but also overtaking Varun Dhawan. His next film is a biggie too, Aditya Chopra’s Befikre. Ranveer is also the youngest star to make it to the Top 5, probably the first after Hrithik Roshan.

While it would be difficult for Ranveer to beat Hrithik in the next couple of years, the next target for Ranveer will be to average 100 crore for his last 5 films. For that, Befikre has to collect Rs 126 crore or more.

    • Bajirao Mastani – 187 cr
    • Dil Dhadakne Do – 77 cr
    • Kill Dil – 32 cr
    • Gunday – 78 cr
    • Ram Leela – 115 cr
    • Next film – Befikre (December 9)
    • Total Collections – 489 cr (Average per film: 97.8 cr)
Rank 6 Akshay Kumar: Airlift has lifted Akshay Kumar from the 8th to the 6th spot and with a big film like Housefull 3 scheduled to release during the Post-IPL period, Akshay is all set to make a comeback to the Top 5. Housefull 3 has to collect 105 crore or more for Akshay to beat Ranveer and a highly unrealistic Rs 290 crore for Akshay to surpass Hrithik.

    • Airlift – 128 crore
    • Singh Is Bling – 88 crore
    • Brothers – 83 crore
    • Gabbar Is Back – 86 crore
    • Baby – 96 crore
    • Next film – Housefull 3 (June 3)
    • Total Collections: 481 cr (Average per film: 96.2 cr)
Rank 7 Ranbir Kapoor: His career was at an all-time high after the success of films like ‘Rockstar’, ‘Barfi’ and ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’, but the last couple of years have been disastrous for Ranbir Kapoor as ‘Besharam’ tanked after a good opening day and ‘Bombay Velvet’ couldn’t even manage a face-saving opening at the box office. Tamasha looked like a winner because it was an Imtiaz Ali film starring Deepika Padukone as the female lead, even that has failed. Nothing seems to be working for Ranbir. His next release is Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil.

    • Tamasha – 66 crore
    • Bombay Velvet – 24 crore
    • Besharam – 57 crore
    • Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani – 188 crore
    • Barfi! – 106 cr
    • Next film – Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (Diwali)
    • Total – 441 cr (Average per film: 88.2 cr)
Rank 8 Varun Dhawan: Another young actor who is not only appearing in 2-3 movies every year, but has made a name for himself in just 3 years. The trade loves him too – all his films have opened well at the box office, none have failed and his solo-lead film ABCD 2 was his first 100 crore grosser. He has now become a serious challenger to Ranbir Kapoor and should easily surpass him with the release of Dishoom in July. Dishoom would have to collect just Rs 60 crore or more for Varun to go one step ahead in the ranking and beat Ranbir.

    • Dilwale – 148 cr
    • ABCD 2 – 105 cr
    • Badlapur – 52 cr
    • Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania – 77 cr
    • Main Tera Hero – 54 cr
    • Next film – Dishoom (July 29)
    • Total Collections – 436 cr (Average per film: 87.2 cr)
Rank 9 Ajay Devgn: Drishyam did fairly well at the box office, but business was affected by Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Baahubali. When the film was gaining momentum, Brothers released and made a huge dent on the business of Drishyam. It would have probably collected a lot more than it did, had the makers timed the release better. Ajay has big films in the form of Shivaay, Baadshaho and Sons Of Sardaar in the next 2 years. He is making a shift from medium budget to big budget films and if this move clicks, he has every chance of making it to the Top 5. Currently, his average is poor for a well-established star.

    • Drishyam – 73 cr
    • Action Jackson – 57 cr
    • Singham Returns – 140 cr
    • Satyagraha – 58 cr
    • Himmatwala – 46 cr
    • Next film – Shivaay (Diwali)
    • Total: 374 cr (Average per film: 74.8 cr)
Rank 10 Sidharth Malhotra: Kapoor & Sons has done well at the box office, but hasn’t helped Sidharth edge out of Ajay. The actor’s next release ‘Baar Baar Dekho’ has to collect 81 crore or more for Sidharth to go one up in the ranking. However, for an actor who has only done 5 films, Rs 73 crore per film is a fantastic average to have. His only failure is a big budget film like ‘Brothers’, which also had a big star like Akshay Kumar.

    • Kapoor & Sons – 73 crore
    • Brothers – 83 cr
    • Ek Villain – 103 cr
    • Hasee Toh Phasee – 35 cr
    • Student Of The Year – 70 cr
    • Next film – Baar Baar Dekho (September 9)
    • Total Collections – 364 cr (Average per film: 72.8 cr)
Rank 11 Arjun Kapoor: Tevar tanked, but Arjun Kapoor has comeback strongly with Ki and Ka, which was a niche film that was well-promoted and opened very well too. It has helped him go up from Rank 12 to 11. Arjun’s average of 62 crore per film (last 5 films) is fantastic too, considering the fact that it includes an off-beat film like Finding Fanny. Half Girlfriend, based on Chetan Bhagat’s novel with the same title, is a biggie. If it does as well as 2 States, it’ll take him higher up in the ranking.

    • Ki and Ka – 54 cr
    • Tevar – 40 cr
    • Finding Fanny – 36 cr
    • 2 States – 102 cr
    • Gunday – 78 cr
    • Next film – Half Girlfriend (April 28 2017)
    • Total Collections – 310 cr (Average per film: 62 cr)
Rank 12 Farhan Akhtar: His popularity with the multiplex audience in cities is under-rated. His solo film ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ not only took a good opening at the box office, but went on to collect more than Rs 100 crore. Farhan has Rock On 2 lined up for release later this year. It would have to collect just 36 crore or more, for Farhan to reclaim his position that he lost to Arjun.

    • Wazir – 40 cr
    • Shaadi Ke Side Effects – 38 cr
    • Bhaag Milkha Bhaag – 104 cr
    • Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara – 93 cr
    • Karthik Calling Karthik – 27 cr
    • Next Film – Rock On 2 (November 11)
    • Total Collections – 302 cr (Average per film: 60.4 cr)
Rank 13 Saif Ali Khan: Phantom didn’t work even though it was directed by Kabir Khan and Happy Ending was one of the biggest disasters of 2014. Saif is currently going through the worst phase of his career.

    • Phantom – 53 cr
    • Happy Ending – 22 cr
    • Humshakals – 63 cr
    • Bullet Raja- 36 cr
    • Race 2 – 102 cr
    • Next film – Rangoon (September 30)
    • Total – 276 cr (Average per film: 55.2 cr)
Rank 14 Shahid Kapoor: Just when Shahid Kapoor’s career was taking a upward turn with films like R.. Rajkumar and Haider, his much-awaited film ‘Shaandaar’ turned out to be one of the biggest disappointments of 2015. It opened well, but wrapped up with lifetime collections of less than 45 crore. With the trade losing both hope and patience in a extremely talented actor like Shahid, he awaits the release of Udta Punjab. What does he need to do, to get that one film that will turn things around for him? A film like Bajirao Mastani or even a ABCD 2, for example. He doesn’t lack in the talent department, but actors who made their debuts nearly a decade after him, have raced past him in no time at all.

For Shahid to go past Saif, Udta Punjab has to collect Rs 72 crore or more.

    • Shaandaar – 43 cr
    • Haider – 58 cr
    • R.. Rajkumar – 65 cr
    • Phata Poster Nikhla Hero – 39 cr
    • Teri Meri Kahaani – 29 cr
    • Next film – Udta Punjab (June 11)
    • Total Collections – 234 cr (Average per film: 46.8 cr)
Rank 15 Emraan Hashmi: Emraan’s career is at an all-time low. None of his last 5 films have even managed to cross the 40 crore mark. The genre that seems to be working today is biopics and Emraan will be seen in a film based on controversial cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin – which has to collect Rs 124 crore or more in India for Emraan to beat Shahid.

    • Hamari Adhuri Kahani – 38 cr
    • Mr X – 25 cr
    • Ungli – 21 cr
    • Raja Natwarlal – 27 cr

    • Ghanchakkar – 39 cr
    • Next film – Azhar biopic (May 13)
    • Total collections – 150 cr (Average per film: 30 cr)
