STORY: It is a rustic tale of the youth in Angamaly, a small town in Kerala. A gang of six youngsters is always ready for an adventure and they venture to try their luck in pork business. How they tackle the challenges takes the movie ahead.

REVIEW: Director Lijo Jose Pellissery introduces 86 promising actors to Mollywood through this ‘katta local’ story written by actor Chemban Vinod Jose. The attempt was fraught with risk; however, with this venture Lijo seems to have pulled off a miracle by producing an entertainer film sans any known actor.

The film’s protagonist is Vincent Pepe (Anthony Varghese), who is a quintessential good boy. He is active in church and a mamma’s boy. As his father is away in Karnataka, Vincent in his teenage years grows up idolising one of the local goons, Babuji. Following his lead, Vincent soon forms a gang of his own, who are ready to take on any challenge and one of them is to run a pork business. The hurdles they face in the daily grind take the coming-of-the-age movie forward.

Showcasing a mélange of beautiful visuals, thumping music and natural performances, Angamaly Diaries is one of the more fresh and terrific attempts made by a filmmaker of late in Mollywood. Chemban has weaved in the dialect, food, music and culture of the people in Angamaly to the plot, paying careful attention to every intricate detail, while making it an engaging movie.

It’s the first movie of every actor in the film and that adds a certain amount of freshness in their performance as well. From the protagonist Vincent to the villain Appani Ravi (Sarath Kumar), the whole cast is a discovery in itself. The actors who played Police officer Shahul Hameed, U Clamp Raju, Pork Varkey, 10 ml Thomas, Lichi and Maramkothi are natural at what they do and the perfect casting helped raise the movie to another level.

What makes it more adorable is how Lijo has combined the raw, natural glimpses of the town, captured by Girish Gangadharan, with the narrative. One cannot resist from falling in love with it, as the plot moves on while the background score and music sets the pace. Music composer Prashanth Pillai has done commendable work in featuring the folk songs of Angamaly as part of the film’s tunes.

While each moment in the film will strike a chord with the youth, it will make the elder viewers nostalgic with those mom-made cuisines, romances, which happen undercover and also those unfulfilled love stories.

Angamaly Diaries will take the viewers on a 131-minute tour through the lives of people in the small town and tells the youth that having fun in life is equally significant as being serious about it, and every man will reach a point in his life, where they will have to draw the line between the two.

    Angamaly Diaries

Lijo Jose Pellissery is a popular Malayalam filmmaker. He made his debut with ‘Nayakan’ starring Indrajith, Siddique and Thilakan that released in the year 2010. This film was praised by critics but it miserably failed at the box office. It was his third film ‘Amen’ that turned out to be path-breaking. This film drew in positive reviews and was also commercially successful at the ticket windows. Lijo received the Best Director title at Asianet Film Award for ‘Amen’. The successful director has now released his fifth film titled ‘Angamaly Diaries’.

The Malayalam film ‘Angamaly Diaries’ released today (March 3). The man has once again experimented in his own style and that has led to positive results. The movie has topped the headlines for roping in 86 fresh faces. Yep, you read that right! That’s the number of newcomers in this feature film. When Lijo was asked why did he cast so many newcomers the director was quoted saying, “In Angamaly Diaries, the hero is the story, and not the people. And casting new faces will give a fresh feeling,” reports Onmanorama. The film produced by Vijay Babu has released across 95 screens in Kerala. Let’s take a look at what critics have to say about the story that is based on the life of people in Angamaly:

FilmiBeat: Director Lijo Jose Pellissery once again proves his extraordinary craft with the excellent portrayal of the Angamaly town and people who live there. He has done a great job by creating a truly raw and realistic movie experience with absolute brilliance. Lijo deserves a huge round of applause for the 11-minte-long single shot which comes in the climax portion. It was shot with absolute perfection, and is truly a magnificent experience for the audiences. (ALSO READ: Malayalam film Ka Bodyscapes denied certification by CBFC)

Times of India: Showcasing a melange of beautiful visuals, thumping music and natural performances, Angamaly Diaries is one of the more fresh and terrific attempts made by a filmmaker of late in Mollywood. Chemban has weaved in the dialect, food, music and culture of the people in Angamaly to the plot, paying careful attention to every intricate detail, while making it an engaging movie.

Celebs Cinema: The movie story went quite well which shows an area which has some background and a guy who settles the issues. The situations when went wrong in the lives of a gang, the action that takes place and the ideas which worked out kept the movie interesting. This is what it made the movie more watchable. Its a must watch film in theaters. (ALSO READ: 1971 – Beyond Borders teaser: Mohanlal’s dual avatar in Major Ravi’s film is intriguing)

Sify Movies: Chemban Vinod Jose, who hails from the area, has managed to come out with a convincing script that is based on real events and characters that behave like normal people. Antony Varghese, who plays Vincent Pepe, is a talent to watch out for. Angamaly Diaries is not the kind of film that tries to impress you with too much goodness or fantasy like situations. But this one is so real, honest and gripping. Go for it!
