After she flees from home mainly to avoid an alliance that she doesn’t like, Tessa (Parvathy) checks into one mess of a room in an old building. As she begins to clean the room, she discovers some interesting aspects about a bohemian youth, who lived there before she came.
Martin Prakkat’s Charlie is about her search to find that amazing guy.
From a storybook that he had sketched about a fascinating adventure with a small time robber, she learns that the man in question had a quirky idea of fun but was at the same time, an extremely genuine human being.
As we learn new stories about his kindness along with Tessa, we too feel attracted to this elusive young man, wearing colourfully printed shirts and sporting an unkempt beard.
Yes, things get a bit overboard and predictable too towards the second half and the film ends perhaps in a rather hasty way. In a certain way, the storyline has traces of influence from G Aravindan’sEsthappan or Bollywood movies like Munnabhai MBBS or Barfi. The makers have taken enough cinematic liberties as well.
But all these don’t take the merits away and with really nice moments that come so often, this one has its heart at the right place.
The screenplay and the dialogues need appreciation, with delicious visuals by Jomon T John. The music by Gopi Sundar is good, but some songs affect the pace of the narrative to a certain extent.
In one of his finest performances till date, Dulquer Salmaan shows terrific flexibility as an actor. He is earnest and convincing. Parvathy once again shows her superb talent and proves that she is one of the finest actress.
The rest of the cast also does manage to impress in a great way, especially Soubin Shaheer, Nedumudi Venu and Chemban Vinod Jose.
Charlie sweeps you off the feat with its inherent charm. It may be far from perfect, but is an entertaining film for sure. Grab a can of popcorn and enjoy this one.
