Best Malayalam Actor in 2015 - Year End Review Malayalam film industry has been blessed with so much talent that every year we witness outstanding performances on screen. This year also there are no exceptions. Many lead and supporting actors got opportunities to perform well in various roles. Here we list top performances in leading roles (Male). 1. Prithviraj - (8/10) With versatalities of the characters he played Prithviraj proved his mettle this year. He was part of three super hit movies with great performances. He started the year with a matured act in Major Ravi's film Picket 43. His acting in Ennu Ninte Moideen, Anarkali were excellent. He proved that he can do comic roles with much ease in Amar Akbar Anthony. Double Barrel and Ivide did not do well in boxoffice, in which Double Barrel was a disaster. Best Role - Moideen in Ennu Ninte Moideen Worst Role- Pancho in Double Barrel 2. Jayasurya - (7.5/10) Every year Jayasurya surprises Malayalam audiences with his acting abilities and dedication towards the characters he plays. 2015 has been a very good year for him as he pulled off stunning performances in the film like Su Su Sudhi Vathmeekam, Kumbasaram and Lukka Chuppi. His dedication towards characters in Amar Akbar Anthony and Su Su Sudhi Vathmeekam were commendable. He has delivered a decent performance in Jilebi as well even though the film was a flop in Box office. He should not have done Aadu Oru Bheekara Jeeviyaanu. Best Role - Sudheendran in Su Su Sudhi Vathmeekam Worst Role - Shaji Pappan in Aadu Oru Bheekara Jeeviyaanu 3. Mammootty - (6.5/10) Mammootty has a mixed year in 2015. Only Bhaskar the Rascal and Pathemari were accepted by audiences and all other films bite the dust in boxoffice. His performance in Pathemari as Pallickal Narayanan was notable. In films like Fireman, Acha Din and Utopiayile Rajavu he has done the character well but actor with his stature should look for more challenging roles. Like most of the veteran actors he has been stereo typed with same kind of roles every year. Best Role - Pallickal Narayana in Pathemari Worst Role - Durgadas in Acha Din 4. Dileep - (6/10) Dileep started the year with a disaster movie 'Ivan Maryadaraman' and ended in a high with 'Two countries'. His performances in Two Countries, Life of Josutty and Chandrettan Evideya are notable. In Love 24x7 he performed as the script demanded but movie did not do well in Boxoffice due to loose screenplay. With Two Countries he returned to his usual comic roles, which has opened well in Boxoffice. He should concentrated on more comedy oriented roles in which he excels compared to many of his contemporaries. Best Role - Ullas in Two Countries Worst Role - Raman in Ivan Maryadaraman 5. Nivin Pauly - (6/10) Nivin Pauly is getting improved every year in both stardom and acting. His performance in Premam as George David was really good. In premam he showcased the mannerisms of a person in three different phases of life in an impeccable way. In Oru Vadakkan Selfie and Mili he has done well enough to convince audience that he is improving his acting skills. Ivide was his disaster movie of the year. He should have played the negative shade character in Ivide with more maturity and control. Best Role - Geroge David in Premam Worst Role - Krish Hebbar in Ivide 6. Kunchacko Boban - (5.5/10) Kunchacko Boban had a fairly good year due to versatalities of roles he has handled this year. His performance in Madhura Naranga and Valiya Chirakulla Pakshikal were praiseworthy. Madhura Naranga and Jamna Pyari did reasonably well in Boxoffice and Valiya Chirakulla Pakshikal was critically acclaimed. He was part of two environmental related movies Lord Livingston 7000 Kandi and Valiya chirakulla pakshikal Best Role - Jeevan in Madhura Naranga Worst Role - UK Karan in Chirakodinja Kinaavukal 7. Asif Ali - (5/10) Asif Ali had a decent year in 2015 but the actor seemed to be sterotyped with same kind of roles for some time. He has delivered three decent movies You Too Brutus, Kohinoor and Nirnayakam. In all these films he has done well according to the script nothing extra ordinary. His role in Kohinoor was his top performance in this year. He has done cameo roles in Amar Akbar Anthony and Double Barrel. Best Role - Louise in Kohinoor Worst Role - He in Double Barrel 8. Mohanlal - (5/10) Legendary actor Mohanlal did not have a good year. Though he had 4 main releases in this year, only Ennum Eppozhum and Loham performed recently well in the Boxoffice. Nothing extra ordinary can be found in his performance this year while considering his calibre, except some parts in Kanal. May be he should consider more on roles which are more challenging and have room for versatality. Best Role - John David in Kanal Worst Role - Jai Mohan in Laila O Laila 9. Dulquer Salmaan - (4.5/10) Dulquer Salman had two releases in Malayalam this year. His latest release Charlie created hype much before its release. Definitely Dulquer Salmaan raised the level of expectation from audience by his best performance. He did not disappoint audience with his act in 100 days of love as well. But the movie did not fare well in box office. Best Role - Charlie in Charlie Worst Role - Balan K Nair in 100 days of Love Year End Review - Best Actress of 2015 10. Vineet Srinivasan(4.5/10) Vineeth Srinivasan is an unexpected entry in this list. His acts in Kunjiramayanam and Oru Vadakkan Selfie were good. Both Kunjiramayanam and Oru Vadakkan Selfie were hit movies of 2015. Though he acted as a second fiddle in Oru vadakkan selfie, his performance was critical to the success of the movie. Best Role - Kunjiraman in Kunjiramayanam Worst Role - Nandu in Oru Second Class Yathra
Best Malayalam Movies of 2015 - Year End Review 2015 has been a promising year for Malayalam cinema. It has produced some financially successful movies after a long time. Some movies completed more than 100 days in theatres which has been quite a rare phenomena in Malayalam Film industry for some years. Films like Ennu Ninte Moideen, Premam, Amar Akbar Antony have rewritten many collection records. Many people prefered to watch movies at theatre rather than waiting for it to telecast in Televisions. Film makers also focused on social and environmental subjects in films like Ottal, Lord Livingston 7000 Kandi, Valiya chirakulla pakshikal, Ain, Alif etc. 1. Pathemari Pathemari tells the story of an expartriot (Pallickal Narayanan) who is a speciman of a Gulf Malayali. Salim Ahamed prefered to show three phases of Pallickal Narayanan with important incidents like migration to Gulf through a 'Pathemari' (big boat) and his death in a Gulf countries. The film was successful in portraying the life of a common gulf Malayali. The film has strong dialogues and Mammootty has done well to convey the emotions of Pallickal Narayanan to audiences. 2. Ennu Ninte Moideen The onscreen adaptation of real life love saga of Moideen and Kanchanamala has won the hearts of Malayalam cinema audience this year. The debutant director RS Vimal spent years to make this eternal(?) love story of two people from different community. Prithviraj and Parvathy done extremely well to impress the audiences. No wonder if they will be part of many award list in the coming year. Songs of this movie as well became a huge hit. 3. Premam Premam created waves in theatre soon after its releases. Director Alphonse puthren delivered a block buster by telling the story of George David in three phases of his life. This complete entertainment package was backed by thrilling songs and superb dialogues. Newcomer Sai Pallavi stole the heart of young generation with her matured performances. Nivin Pauly and Madonna Sebastian delivered impeccable performances in this film. It would have broken the record of alltime blockbuster in Malayalam, unless the pirated copy went viral. This film has been a huge hit in Tamil Nadu as well. 4. Su Su Sudhi Vathmeekam Malayalam industry produces very less inspiring movies. Thanks to Ranjith Sankar to show the courage to depict the life of a common man named Sudheendran, who is a stammerer too. This movie helps one to find the skills in everyman and also really helps to improve the confidence of people. Jayasurya delivered an outstanding performance as Sudhi, which will be definitely one of the highlights of his career. Both heroines also delivered a level head performances. 5. Amar Akbar Antony With no vulgar comedy and a message to society, Nadirsha debuted in Malayalam films as a director in a grand way. Amar Akbar Anthony was a complete comedy flick with a social message. Prithviraj, Indrajith and Jayasurya combination once again worked well after Classmates. Prithviraj has proven that he can do comedy roles as well. Nadirsha made his directional debut by presenting a blockbuster movie to Malayalam audience. 6. Kumbasaram Kumbasaram was neither a box office success nor it had huge fan followers, but still it was one of the best films of 2015 with strong story and brilliant performances from the cast. The film tells the story of a helpless father who is in need of money to save his son's life. Once again, Jayasurya did not disappoint the audiences, his impeccable performance was the high point in this film. It is unfortunate the audiences did not recieve it well in box office 7. Nirnayakam Nirnayakam tells the story of common man's fight against our current democratic system for finding justice. The films shows how many people come together for a cause against our useless government system. An NDA dropout, who came Kerala to spend some time with his father upon his request, happened to be part of this cause. He forgets his differences with his father and helps him to win a case against the government. The film was not a success in box office though it had strong performances and very good storyline. 8. Charlie Read more: Charlie Box Office Report Charlie is a love story, which was taken in a fresh and innovative way by Martin Prakkat. Tessa wanted to live a life according to desire accidently finds information about Charlie and she chases to find this interesting character. Dulquer and Parvathy were lead actors in this movie. Performances of cast and cinematography were brilliant in Charlie. The film had an excellent start in the BoxOffice by collecting over 2 Crores in its opening day. 9. Anarkali It was a feel good Romantic movie directed by debutant Sachy. It tells an intense love story between a Malayali Navy officer (Shantanu) and a North Indian girl. Cinematography and story was good in this movie apart from brilliant performances of Prithviraj, Biju Menon and Kiran Bedi. The film did well in Boxoffice and prithviraj had a wonderful year with three hit movies 10. Oru Vadakkan Selfie Oru Vadakkan Selfie is a comedy thriller road movie starring Nivin Pauly, Aju Varghese, Manjima and Vineet Srinivasan in lead roles. It tells the story of a irresponsible youngster who chase his dream to become a film maker. But due to some unexpected incidents he has to face wrath of his society and he tries to prove his innocence later. The movie was the first super hit of 2015. The movie showcases the carelessness of current generation youngster in a comic way. Special Mention - Two Countries Read more: Two Countries BoxOffice Collection Report Shafi-Dileep duo always know what people expect from their film and they successfully delivered a sure hit film. The director specifically given more importance to story rather than rely on a complete comedy package. This film will help Dileep to recover from the recent box office slump that he faced this year. There will be a clear chance that Two Countries can be the winner of this Christmas as the initial hype for Charlie may settle down in the coming weeks. Missed out : Picket 43, Kohinoor, Mili, Loham, Kanal, Chandrettan evideya, Lukka chuppi, Bhascar the Rascal http://www.topmovierankings.com/
2015: Youngsters reigned, superstars failed in Mollywood - Be it Nivin Pauly-starrer “Premam” or debutante director R S Vimal’s “Ennu Ninte Moideen”, young actors and filmmakers reigned Malayalam film industry in 2015, while superstars and veteran directors failed to recreate their magic at the box office. Fresh themes and new narrative styles were well-received even as few movies, set in traditional format, had some relief at cinemas. The unprecedented history created by Jayaraj-directed “Ottal” (The Trap) at IFFK by sweeping all major awards including the coveted Suvarna Chakoram (Golden Crow Pheasant) infused a fresh confidence into the makers of serious cinema in Malayalam. “Neram” director Alphonse Puthren’s second movie “Premam” (The Love), which revolves around the three phases of the love life of the protagonist George, hit headlines not only in the name of its immense theatre collections and long queues of youngsters before cinemas but also for some wrong reasons. People from various walks of life including state police chief T P Senkumar and veteran director Kamal criticised the “wrong” influence the movie cast on young generation. The alleged leak of the Censor copies of the movie on social media, when it was set to cross all collection records, created a row in the industry. “Ennu Ninte Moideen” (Yours forever, Moideen), a romantic movie based on a real-life story of Moideen and Kanchanamala, a couple from north Kerala, attracted both classes and masses and was hailed by critics as one of the most evergreen romantic films of Malayalam. The success of the film was such that there were people thronging to visit the real life Kanchanamala, who is 75 now, to catch a glimpse of the woman who had spent her entire life waiting for her love– Moideen, who died in a tragic boat accident decades ago. But, the legal battle and war of words between its director Vimal and Kanchanamala, over the script of the movie, reduced the sheen of the historic success of the Prithviraj-Parvathi starrer film to some extent. Of over 140 films released in Mollywood this year, only a handful of them did well at the box office and could be tagged as hit, super hit or blockbuster. Besides “Premam” and “Ennu Ninte Moideen”, “Oru Vadakan Selfie”, “Amar Akbar Antony”, “Anarkali” and “Madhuranaranga” also did ring the bells of cash boxes. A number of films like “Su Su Sudhi Valmeekam”, “Chandrettan Evideya”, “Picket 43”, “Life of Josutty” and “Love 24×7” received good reviews and wooed audience. Lijo Jose Pellissery-directed “Double Barrel” and Anil Radhakrishna Menon’s “Lord Livingston 7000 Kandi” were noted for its experimental narrative techniques and striking titles though they were not received well at box office. Even though superstars Mammootty and Mohanlal had a number of movies in their kitty this year like always, most of them including “Laila O Laila”, “Acha Din”, “Uttopyayile Rajavu” and “Bhaskar the Rascal” failed to strike a chord with the audience. But, Mammootty-starrer “Pathemari”, directed by National award-winning film maker Salim Ahmed and Renjith’s Mohanlal movie “Loham”, a suspense thriller, attracted viewers. Among the veteran filmmakers, Sathyan Anthikkad, known for family dramas and social satires, continued to retain his space in the flood of new generation filmmakers with his Mohanlal-Manju Warrier movie “Ennum Eppozhum”. Aashiq Abu’s “Rani Padmini”, a road movie noted for the stellar performance of Rima Kallingal and Manju Warrier, and Rajesh Pillai-directed “Mili”, which revolves around the life of an introvert woman starred by Amala Paul, gained plaudits as heroine-centric movies. This year’s International Film Festival of Kerala, which featured over 170 films from across the world here during December 4-11, received wide appreciation as one of the best ever editions in the history of the movie gala. Besides Suvarna Chakorama, “Ottal”, an adaptation of Russian writer Anton Chekhov’s short story “Vanka”, won the Best Film of the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) jury, the Best Malayalam film of the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema (NETPAC) jury and the Audience Poll awards in IFFK. “Ottal” earlier won the National Award in the best environment film category and the State Award for the best feature film. The state film awards, announced by a jury chaired by eminent script writer John Paul, stood out for its difference this year as popular stars and movies bagged prominent awards unlike in previous years. Nivin Pauly and Sudhev Nair shared honours in the best actor category while Nazriya Nazim won award for the best actress. The demises of iconic cinematographer-director A Vincent, known for path-breaking movies like “Neelakkuyil” and “Bhargavi Nilayalm”, comedians Mala Aravindan and Paravoor Bharathan, music director Yusafali Kechery and singers Radhhika Thilak and Bombay S Kamal created an irreparable vacuum in the industry. - See more at: http://indianexpress.com/article/en...d-in-mollywood/#sthash.ocWxtSPd.0EU2HE1T.dpuf
