A carefully scripted career BY D GOVARDAN, TNN | JUL 28, 2007, 04.50 AM IST Over the last two decades, Mammootty and Mohan Lal remained the flagships of the Malayalam film industry. Together, they control 80-90% of the annual revenues. One need not search far and wide for the reasons behind Mammootty's successful run in the industry. Hard work, careful selection of scripts and the ability to live the character. As simple as that. Starting with I V Sasi's Trishna, his first film as a hero, Mammootty appeared in a series of films that endeared him to the family audience. Along with Sasi and M T Vasudevan Nair, he gave some memorable films like Aalkoottathil Thaniye. He then added action-oriented films to his bouquet and gave super hits like Avnazhi, Inspector Balram and Oru CBI Diary Kurippu. And director Joshi played a major role with this genre whose New Delhi gave another spin to Mammootty's career. "One greatness about Mammootty is the fact that he joined hands with young directors to give big hits. And Raja Manickam, released in 2005, remains his biggest commercial hit by grossing around Rs 12 crore," says Sridhar Pillai of India Movie Buzz. "Throughout most part of his career, Mammootty has had almost six releases every year. No one can survive at that level for so long, with such a high frequency of films. The success is due to the mix of the films," he added. In the present scenario, a Mammootty film is made with a budget of Rs 1.8-2 crore in the case of small and medium budgets, while it goes up to Rs 2.5 crore in the case of big budgets. Besides Kerala's theatrical rights which fetch around Rs 2-2.25 crore, Mammootty has a good following in states like Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, besides a large overseas market in the Middle East. However, his last couple of films, including the recent release Mission 90 days has been beaten to the second place by Mohan Lal's Hallo. But, then its been always a see-saw battle between Mammootty and Mohan Lal, with latter seemingly in the lead as of now.
