I can relate more to mature, serious characters: Narain

While Adam Joan is a dark thriller, the bright spots in the movie belong to the scenes with Prithviraj and Narain. The duo, who played buddies for the fourth time, eased into their roles-mostly because they are friends in real life too, says Narain.

For Narain, it's been some time since he starred in a big budget film in Malayalam and hence the positive audience feedback for the role has been heartening.

"My previous role as a comic villain in Kavi Uddheshichathu...? was something I had never done before and I enjoyed that challenge. But in Adam Joan, it was a mature character and I could easily connect to his serious outlook," he says.

The cast of the film too had helped him be at ease. "We shot in Scotland for almost two months. It had Prithviraj, Bhavana and Lena - all of whom are friends. Also, we stayed at an apartment complex, rather than hotel rooms. So, it was like a lengthy vacation, shooting with people who you knew really well," the actor says.

On his camaraderie with Prithviraj with whom he had worked in Classmates, Ayaalum Njanum Thammil and Robin Hood, Narain says, "Prithvi and I were supposed to do a film with a big director last year but that didn't work out for some reason. So when Adam Joan was offered, I didn't have to think twice before taking it up. We are friends in real life and so even while acting that equation must have seeped in. I am glad that it worked for the better."
Narain says he is currently in discussions for two Malayalam films but his upcoming release is a Tamil movie titled Othaikku Othai, which also stars Atharvaa.

When Prithviraj pushed for a drone worth Rs 4 lakh

Those who have worked with Prithviraj would attest that the actor ensures that he does whatever it takes to enhance the technical aspects of the film. For his latest release Adam Joan, the superstar apparently pushed for a cutting-edge drone for the aerial shots in Scotland.

In fact, it wasn't even the cinematographer of the film who controlled the helicam but its still photographer, Mahadevan Thampi. He tells us, "I had done two to three shots in the song sequence for the film in Kerala. Prithvi and the film's director Jinu Abraham were impressed with my work and that's when they decided it was better if I handle the drone in the Scotland schedule too rather than hire someone from there."

The movie warranted a lot of aerial shots to show the locales of Scotland as well as for the chase sequences. "I shot for 30 days with my equipment after which it started showing errors. That's when Prithvi told the producer that I am doing my job well and asked him to get me the latest drone that cost about Rs 4 lakh. Prithviraj assured them that it would still cost less than hiring a drone operator," says Mahadevan, adding that he shot with the equipment for the rest of the film.
On the advantages of using a drone in movies, Mahadevan, who first filmed scenes using the equipment for Kamal Haasan's Vishwaroopam, says, "It doesn't have the constraints of a jib setup that needs at least five technicians to assist."
The photographer, who also got a credit as the helicam operator for the film, however says that he has no plans to be a cinematographer in the future. "The dream has always been to direct a movie," says Mahadevan, who has also handled the helicam for Prithviraj's Vimaanam.
