Tiyaan The expectations were sky high ever since the movie was announced. I imagined Murali Gopi would be producing some hard hitting thought provoking cult movie. Instead, what we got is a run of the mill Telugu movie covered in a thin layer of pseudo intellectualism and pseudo liberalism trying to fake as an awakened revolutionary movie. The movie starts of well with Adi Shankaran and Sanatana Dharmam and the expectations soar up again. Then we move on to a North Indian village where the entire story is unfolding. The movie was touted to be one of the highly expensive movies made in Malayalam. But surprisingly, the entire setup screams low budget. It is evident in every shot that the village is a set up for the shoot, nothing feels original. The walls, the shops, the buildings and the people all give a Telugu movie feel. Since almost 70% of the movie is shot only and only in this particular surrounding, the makers could have spent a bit more money on making the setup feel a tad bit original. Aslam Muhammed is a half baked character with no real character sketch. Yes, the makers do show his backstory. But the only thing that the audience get from the back story of Aslam is that he is a goon who thrashes and kills other goons. Thats it. Nothing else. Aslam does not speak like normal people. Yes, he was awakened by aghoris and that is welll and clearly shown. But that does not explain why they chose him to awaken. Maybe the makers just left it as a choice to the audience but it does not fit right. Murali Gopi does his part extremely well as Mahashay Bhagwan the god man, but his writing fails in this movie. His writing in Left Right Left amazed me but here it is just all over the place. He couldnt find a balance between commercial elements, his philosophies which he wanted to convey and the present political scenarios. He tries his hand at symbolism in a scene where Mahahsya Bhagwan asks a Dalit boy to throw a stone at a Brahmin. I guess what he wanted to say is how the ruling class is exploiting Dalits as a tool to create religious sparks within Hindu's. But the scene is too forced and does not invoke much of a feeling. Indrajith Sukumaran has aced in the role of Pattabhiraman. He is proving again and again that he is a gem of an actor. The interval scene where in he points at himself and says "Melpatiyaan....Malabari....Tiyaan" shows his metal. Prithviraj really has nothing much to do other than walking around in slow-mo and making people fly and intro-ing with heavy bgm. Tiyaan is probably one of my biggest disappointments as a movie lover. Maybe because I expected so much and the movie turned out to be a swamp dud. Sorry Murali Gopi, we want better movies from your pen!!!
