Director AR Murugadoss, the man with an extraordinary box-office track record, teams up with Prince Mahesh Babu for the very first time. Though nearly all AR Murugadoss films have either been dubbed or remade in Telugu, Spyder happens to be just his 2nd straight Telugu flick. The expectations that Spyder entices is massive and has the film satisfied its targeted audience or not? Read further to know more:

Mahesh Babu plays an Intelligence Bureau officer who goes against the government norms to protect people from harm's way. How one failure leads him to a menacing psychopath serial killer, and how he encounters him is all Spyder is about. Though it looks fairly straightforward, the way it is narrated makes it look complex and dynamic.

The movie wastes no time to get going, as it grabs the attention of the crowd from the very word go. The narration doesn’t look to stagnate one bit, as the director keeps throwing in enough surprises one after another which is also layered with some riveting and pulsating action sequences for the audience to consume. But towards the end, it gets a little boring.

With solid performances and a brisk screenplay, this movie offers solid, no-frills drama that not contrived though it deals with a larger than life subject. That is where AR Murugadoss stamps his class. Not many could execute an intense subject as commercial as him.

AR Murugadoss has maneuvered his resources with utmost perfection creating both suspense and an emotional impact all the more powerful because it creeps up so quietly. The result is an engaging and relentless thriller.

Mahesh Babu was just perfect for the role; he fits the bill like a glove. He looks utterly endearing for his age, and when he is through the lens of legendary Santhosh Sivan, you could not just take your eyes off from him.

SJ Suryah finds a meaty role with ample screen time and voluminous scope to prove his acting skills. ARM has made no compromise in establishing SJ Suryah's character knowing that it would be the USP of the film. SJ Suryah’s introduction scene, in particular, was terrifying and well-structured.

Spyder will be remembered for the breathtaking battle between Mahesh Babu and SJ Suryah. It would have even powerful had SJ Suryah had rendered his voice. One of the sequences follows a similar pattern of 12 man shootout scene from Thuppakki but this one more artificial.

Rakul Preet looks so cute, and her romance portions with Mahesh works at parts. At places, it looked fresh, but at places, some may find it distracting. ‘Celiliyia’ song seemed like a mistimed though the track is fun to listen.

Some CGI moments could have been done with more care. Though there are time and other constraints, such tacky graphics could have been avoided in a big film like Spyder.

Harris Jayaraj’s re-recording is very effective and the highlight score would be the theme track for SJ Suryah. The stunt sequences composed by Peter Hein is another major attraction to Spyder especially the theme action scene.

Beyond a point, the film gets a little too heavy with gore, and one might feel the climax could have been executed better. Apart from these minor issues, Spyder will entertain you if you are an action film lover.



Verdict: A high-power action entertainer with an extremely menacing villain to spice up the occasion

AR Murugadoss is back in Tamil after Kaththi, almost 3 years. This time he had come with a bilingual offering in Tamil and Telugu to launch Mahesh Babu in Tamil. Mahesh Babu’s long-awaited Tamil launch is carefully selected under the able direction of AR Murugadoss, who is one of the handful of directors who knows how to handle star power with class and mass.


Story, Screenplay, and Direction

Spyder has typical AR Murugadoss signature style of making. The movie has his usual ingredients of popular hero fighting for a social cause with good dose of lighter and romancemoments with good technical values and songs. AR Murugadoss takes up a social theme in every one of his movies in the past. This time is no different as he delves into the lack of compassion among people due to modern day technology advancements. AR Murugadoss takes a very interesting premise of how the lack of compassion in society leads to increase in crime to derive sadistic pleasures. AR Murugadoss takes the time to establish the villainous nature of SJ Suryah through flashback portions, narrated in a dark and grim manner. The buildup of SJ Suryah’s character during the first half is one of the best portions during the movie.



Mahesh Babu

Mahesh Babu has done justice to this role in every possible way. His character displays the combination of brains and brawns, showcased almost in equal measure throughout the film. Mahesh Babu physique and looks fit that description to the T. Not many heroes in Tamil (and Telugu) would look equally convincing in such a role. Mahesh Babu acts in a measured manner while displaying larger than life where it matters.



SJ Suryah

Finding good villains have been a challenge of-late. SJ Suryah has done a spectacular job with his looks dialogue delivery and body language. The director has given up the necessary build upto further heighten his darkness of his characterization. SJ Suryah’s villainy elevates the stature of Mahesh Babu’s heroism. SJ Suryah’s characterization is along the lines of Joker and other villains in super hero movies. The opening scene with a mask makes the right impact.



Rakul Preet Singh does the standard role of heroine expected to provide the romance factor. Bharath is back in a smaller cameo role, acts as a stepping stone to the big villain.



Downside

AR Murugadoss keeps the script very tight during the first half and establishes the feud between the hero and villain characters. However, the director appears to go overboard and ignores the logic, especially in the scene how he tracks down SJ Suryah holed up in a house through TV Serial. AR Murugadoss regains ground during the climax portion with the elaborately mounted fight sequence in a bomb-laden hospital.



Music and Technical values

Harris Jayaraj’s background score is exceptional, especially building up for SJ Suryah. It will send chills down your spine during the flashback portion. Harris has done well in the song departments with a good hero introduction song and a duet song. Santhosh Sivan’s camerawork moves the story along well. The camerawork in the hospital rubbles is very well done. The editing and camera work along with background music supports the storyline.




This is AR Murugadoss signature style movie with Superhero template without the hero having super powers. This is probably the best launch Mahesh Babu could have asked for. In return, Tamil audience will embrace Mahesh Babu.
