MALAYALAM CINEMA CAN EXPAND ONLY THROUGH ITS ACTORS

Last year was nothing short of eventful for Prithviraj. He was part of three major grossers -Ennu Ninte Moideen, Amar Akbar Anthony and Anarkali -and also signed off the year as the most sought after actor. It wasn't just about commercial blockbusters in 2015 as he was also part of movies such as Picket 43, Ivide and Double Barrel -all three showcasing different shades of the actor in him. With over 13 years in the industry , his choice of scripts tare proof that the star has matured as an actor and learnt a few tricks to remain on top. I Prithviraj starts off his new year with G Marthandan's Pavada that will see him in a rustic role after a long time. The f actor talks to us about how he thinks Malayalam cinema can expand its reach, his stand on wide releases and more...

What selection criteria do you foli low to ensure success in the box l office?

I think a film has to stay true to its story. I have a problem with films diluting their essence in the process of its making. I understand Premam being a huge success has suddenly made people think that cinema has to be made for the 10 to 30-year-old group. I am not a big believer in that. Those are not the only age group watching cinema in Kerala theatres. Yeah, Premam was a humongous success and complete credit to the team. I myself enjoyed the film. I believe if the film is true to what it is about and is very clear in its communication, it will work.

However, that's not a guarantee. I don't think there's a foolproof method to analyse, research and pick films. If that is the case, no actor would be part of the film that does not work.

Will we see you foray into other film industries this year?

If a script appeals to me, I do it regardless of the language or genre. That's how I did the two Hindi movies and also the Tamil films. Tomorrow if I listen to a script that excites me, for all you know I might even sign up a Bhojpuri film. I have listened to a lot of scripts after Aurangazeb in Hindi and I am continuously listening to Tamil scripts after Kaaviya Thalaivan. But nothing has excited me so much that I wanted to take time off from my commitments in Malayalam and do it. If it does, I will.

A lot of actors including you, Dulquer Salmaan and Nivin Pauly have fans even in other industries...

I think it's only through our actors that Malayalam cinema can expand. It's great that the younger crop of actors are finding footholds in other languages in South India. That way , down the line, the possibilities of a Malayalam production in four languages can become a reality .In terms of our reach as a medium, I think the way we should proliferate is through our actors.

I also feel there is still space for expansion even within Kerala. I still don't think we have enough theatres. We haven't fully tapped the potential of our exhibition sector. Why do you think so? The archaic ideas such as the ban on wide release should be put in the dust bin. It doesn't make sense to me at all. I don't own a theatre, so I am nobody to speak in terms of the figures or the ground reality of it. But as someone who watches films and has seen how cinema has evolved in the past 10 to 15 years in Kerala, I just don't understand, if we have 250 to 300 theatres in the State, why can't a film be released in all of them?

    How would that help?

When you are talking about releasing a film in 300 theatres at a go, maybe the film will only run for 10 days. But the revenue generated will be greater than the film running in 50 theatres for 100 days. What it also does is opening up space for more projects. Theatres would want more films because the lifespan of each film is going to come down.As the demand increases, supply should increase and that in turn makes sure there is more film production happening. Currently I think there is a roadblock in the exhibition sector that should be removed.

You've backed three films -Double Barrel, Anuraga Karikkin Vellam and Darwinte Parinamam that are experimental in nature...

There are a lot of people who are willing to invest in films that might have a reasonable star cast. At the risk of sounding immodest, if tomorrow I say I want to do a movie, I am sure it wouldn't be tough to find somebody to fund it. But there are films like Double Barrel, which people may hesitate to put their money into because it may or may not work. I support films that may not necessarily find takers otherwise.
