SPI CINEMAS SCREEN 1 2K DOLBY 7.1 STATUS:60 PERCENT 14/11/2017 11 AM SHOW Haunted house horror may be the most tried and tested subgenre in horror. There is absolutely nothing new about this genre. A family moves to a new house. House will have a dark past. Mysterious events unfold gradually and the lead pair eventually confront this spirit. Most of the movies of this genre will also have twisted endings like disturbing climax of Sinister for example. Aval closely follows this pattern, rather than run of the mills horror comedy which KTown had been churning out one after the other in recent years. Apart from few exceptions like BhargaviNilayam,Liza, Manichithrathazhu, AkashaGanga, Ezra, Maya most of the Indian horror movies are not impressive, technically and thematically, despite having a rich folklore. However Aval stays true to its genre and serves the basic purpose of a horror movie- to scare (Though I felt Maya was a more frightening experience) The western influence in Aval is quite evident from the interior designing of the house, terrain/locational placing of the plot to the numerous liplocks and some steamy lovemaking scenes shared by the lead pair! Even the title font of the movie resembles very much like ‘The Ring’. But despite that similarities, movie manages to hold interest throught out, thanks to the perfect direction by Milind Rau. Screenplay co written by Siddarth is also engaging till the climax. Editing,music and other technical departments are also top notch. The one thing that I found quite interesting is on the title cards, where makers thank ‘The Devil’. It hints that something really serious horror stuff is gonna follow. Casting is not only perfect but also smart. I used the word ‘smart’ because apart from being good performers, all the actors in the movie be it Siddarth, Andrea Jeremiah, Prakash Balwade or Athul Kulkarni, they all have a pan indian appeal. Since horror is a genre which did not have any language barriers, considering the financial side, this is a smart move by makers. Another brilliance of the makers is the setting/placing of the plot. Since most of the story revolves around the hill station, local culture is seldom mentioned unlike other recent horror movies like Ezra . All these adds to the universal appeal of the movie. The only negative that I found in the movie is a bit let down climax. I expected something much more ‘evilish’ than the preinterval sequences. Aval is filmed using Dolby Atmos and its sound design is already lauded by Richard King, who is an associate of Christopher Nolan. Aval outperforms both Ezra and Maaya , recent horror blockbusters in terms of atmos mixing. So it is a must that you have to watch Aval in a theatre with atmos preferably 64 channel, if you want to cherish this experience in its grandeur. I was only able to watch it in dolby 7.1 (Since it was not released in 4k atmos inside the city and I was down with fever) , even with that ,the sounddesigning was felt as quite excellent on par with international standards. With some stunning cinematography, good performances from the lead cast, well written screenplay with enough edge of the seat moments, Aval is the kind of movie that you should not miss in big screen. A must watch movie for every moviebuff! My personal favourite this year after Thupparivaalan and Vikram Vedha. RATING: 4.5/5 "EXCELLENT HORROR THRILLER "
