How realistic can be a mass entertainer? The answer lies in vinoth’s Karthi starrer ‘Theeran Adhigaram Ondru’. Made on a slick budget of 20cr, Theeran revolves around real life crimes committed by Bawaria tribes, which terrorised the highways of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka during 1995-2005. The group which was called by various names, seldom used electronic gadgets leaving little forensic evidence, creating constant head ache to state police. The brutality of crime scenes made them one of the notorious thugs in the police history of India. The film begins with the introduction of Theeran Thirumaaran IPS who remembers about the case which still haunts his self. We are then introduced to Priya, his love interest. Things take a turn when Theeran began investigating a mass murder of a family nearby. Vinoth debutant flick sathuranga vettai was a highly acclaimed one by both critics and audience. Through this movie, vinoth proved that he is not a one film wonder. Director has gone through great research regarding the crimes, as it is evident from the film itself. ‘Theeran’ fits the bill of ‘well researched police drama’. Screenplay also written by vinoth is racy and have many edge of the seat moments especially in preinterval portions and entire second half.The best part of the movie is the preinterval sequences. The animation used by director to show the history of the gang was also quite appealing. In addition to that, vinoth should be appreciated as a movie like ‘Theeran’ is quite difficult one to film.Many sequences in second half is difficult to film for a one movie old film maker. Despite the length, a highly engaging screenplay and its near perfect execution glues his viewers to seat right from the beginning to end credits. When it comes to acting, all of them delivered good performances. Karthi is convincing as a policeofficer. His body language and dialogue delivery has also improved a lot. This movie is also a physically demanding one unlike other movies of his recent past. Theeran will hopefully provide Karthi who came after an underperformed Kaashmora and a disaster ‘Kaatru veliydai’ a much needed hit at boxoffice.Theeran is the second time, Karthi donning Khakhee after blockbuster ‘Siruthai’. But Ratnavel Pandian and Theeran Thirumaran are at two poles apart. And never expect a loud action thriller like Siruthai from Theeran. Abhimanyu Singh and all other actors who played the antagonists looks scary and threatening as well. Rakul preet was wasted. All other supporting cast did their part well. DOP by Sathyan Sooryan is nothing short of brilliance. Ghibran proved why he was the most underrated music composer of his time. The bgm used in preinterval sequences was superb.Thrills by Dilip Subbaraayan was also top notch. The only let down in the movie is the romantic sequences between lead pair and the songs. Theeran Adhigaram Ondru is a remarkable police movie from tamil after Chatriyan of 1990s and Kakkha Kakkha of 2000s.What I really liked about ‘Theeran’ is that, there was deliberate attempt to stay away from mainstream police dramas. Theeran is also a fresh relief from other police movies in which hero is relentlessly running after mafia dons, gangsters,goons and lending out dialogues of atleast one paragraph. For me, this is the best Tamil cinema produced this year after Thupparivaalan. Vikram Vedha, Thupparivaalan,Aval and now Theeran.,Kollywood is scaling new heights!
