PREVIEW: MANCHESTER UNITED V SOUTHAMPTON Scene-setter: United are now unbeaten in five matches across all competitions and head into this clash with Southampton on the back of a confidence-building 1-0 win at rivals Liverpool. Victory over the Saints would further strengthen Louis van Gaal’s claim that his side can still compete for the title. Form guide: The Reds beat Southampton 3-2 at St Mary’s earlier this season but lost 1-0 when the Saints last visited Old Trafford in January 2015. Prior to that result, the south-coast club had gone 22 matches without a victory at the Theatre of Dreams during a dismal run that stretched back to January 1988. Looking specifically at players, Wayne Rooney is the man to watch this weekend after the captain netted his fifth goal in four matches with a 78th-minute winner at Anfield last time out. Latest team news: Ashley Young suffered an injury during the first half on Merseyside and van Gaal is expected to provide an update on his fitness during his pre-match press conference on Friday. Injured trio Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Michael Carrick watched that game from the away end and it is still unclear whether they are fit to return. Bastian Schweinsteiger has also recently joined Antonio Valencia and Luke Shaw on the sidelines, but Adnan Januzaj could feature after playing for the Under-21s on Monday. Southampton are set to be without just two players in Gaston Ramirez and Florin Gardos.
Sub-plot: Morgan Schneiderlin joined United from Saints in the summer and the French midfielder will face his former club for the second time on Saturday. Van Gaal will also pit his wits against Ronald Koeman, who was manager of Ajax when he was sporting director at the Amsterdam ArenA. View from the dressing room: “For the moment, we have to stay focused and keep the same mentality in our next game at Old Trafford against Southampton, the team of my friend Oriol Romeu. They have got two convincing wins in the last two games so we must be careful.” - Juan Mata Danger men: Charlie Austin could make his debut at Old Trafford after joining Southampton from Queens Park Rangers for £4million last weekend. The 26-year-old striker scored 18 top-flight goals last season and Koeman says he was his number one target this month. “The number of goals he's scored in the Premier League is amazing,” the Dutchman said. “We are looking forward to having him in the squad, and having more competition. That will be good.” Rivals watch:Saturday - Norwich City v Liverpool (12:45), Crystal Palace v Tottenham Hotspur (15:00), Leicester City v Stoke City (15:00), West Ham v Manchester City (17:30).
