Akshay Kumar’s Airlift continued to dominate at multiplexes in its 2nd weekend at the box office. The film was clearly the first choice for moviegoers, inspite of the fact that R. Madhavan’s Saala Khadoos and Sunny Leone’s Mastizaade released in theatres this weekend.

Airlift has collected Rs 6.5 crore on its 9th day to take its total to Rs 94.5 crore. On Sunday, Airlift will become Akshay’s 4th film in the 100 crore club and his first since ‘Holiday: A Solider Is Never Off Duty’ which released about 20 months ago.

The growth on 2nd Saturday (45%) is better than 1st Saturday (40%), which goes to show that the film is carrying excellent word-of-mouth at city multiplexes.

The film is now looking at lifetime business of somewhere around the 125 – 130 crore mark. Whether it can go on to beat Akshay’s highest grosser Rowdy Rathore, is something that remains to be seen.

Airlift has collected Rs 19.26 crore in its second weekend at the box office. It has crossed the 100 crore mark, becoming only the 4th hundred crore Akshay Kumar film after Rowdy Rathore, Housefull 2 and Holiday: A Solider Is Never Off Duty.

The second weekend of Airlift was better than this week’s release Mastizaade. The film will continue to be the first choice for the multiplex audience this week. Sunny Deol’s Ghayal Once Again releases this weekend and that film is unlikely to affect the business of Airlift at high-end multiplexes.

A lot of people have asked if Airlift can go on to be Akshay’s highest grosser to date. At the end of 10 days (i.e second weekend), Housefull 2 had collected 84.3 crore and the second weekend of the film was quite similar to Airlift. Rowdy Rathore had collected exactly 100 crore at the end of its 2nd weekend, Airlift is ahead by a couple of crores, but Rowdy had better trends and had collected Rs 10.5 crore on its second Sunday. Holiday had collected Rs 86.73 crore in 10 days.

In short, Airlift is ahead of all other Akshay Kumar films at the end of the second weekend.

As for collections ‘after’ the second weekend, Rowdy Rathore collected Rs 34 crore, Housefull 2 collected Rs 31.7 crore and Holiday collected Rs 26.27 crore. Airlift needs to collect as much as Housefull 2 did after its second weekend to surpass the business of Rowdy Rathore.

Airlift has become Akshay Kumar’s most profitable film since Rowdy Rathore, which released back in 2012. In between, the superstar had films like Holiday: A Soldier is Never Off Duty, Special 26, Baby and Gabbar Is Back, but none were as profitable as Airlift.

OMG! Oh My God was a huge success, but it did not feature Akshay Kumar in the lead.

A big success at multiplexes couldn’t have come at a better time for Akshay, as he awaits the release of his most successful franchise film ‘Housefull 3’ in June this year.

Released during the extended Republic Day weekend, Airlift has collected Rs 102 crore in 10 days at the box office so far. The film had to collect around 65-70 crore from India and around $3 million from overseas to recover costs. It managed to do so in its first weekend itself. The India share is expected to touch the 60 crore mark, while overseas the film could get close to $6 million – nearly doubling the figure that it needed to recover costs.
