Riyad Mahrez is your player of the season... but is he the Premier League’s greatest-ever African footballer?

RIYAD MAHREZ’S astonishing run of form continues to drive Leicester towards a once unthinkable Premier League title.

And SunSport readers are almost unanimous in believing the French-born playmaker should be named player of the year.

An incredible 90 per cent of you currently think Foxes’ star Mahrez should pick up the PFA gong come April.

But is the Algerian-international the greatest African to grace the Premier League?

SunSport takes a look at ten other African stars who lit up our domestic game.

    TONY YEBOAH

TWO strikes alone are enough to guarantee Leeds’ Ghanaian hero Yeboah a place on the list.

The first, against Liverpool, saw him smash a volley with breathtaking power past David James.

The second, one week later against Wimbledon, won him the 1995 goal of the year.

Controlling the ball past two Dons defenders, Yeboah let loose with a ferocious strike that almost broke the crossbar.

One year later he was back playing in Germany for Hamburg — but what a cameo it was.

    LUCAS RADEBE

ANOTHER Leeds star whose class would be so welcome at Elland Road now.
South African Radebe captained the Whites to fourth and third-place top-flight finishes in 1998/9 and 1999/00.

The centre-back turned out 256 times during an 11-year career in Yorkshire, and even stayed with the club when they were relegated to the Championship in 2005.

    JOSEPH YOBO

NIGERIAN Yobo was David Moyes’ first signing at Everton boss — and a fine acquisition he turned out to be.
The imposing centre-half appeared 239 for the Toffees and became the first African player to captain the Liverpudlians when he briefly took the reins from Phil Neville in October 2007.

    YAKUBU AIYEGBENI

STRIKER Yakubu embodied the term journeyman — but his goalscoring record was ferocious.
Turning out for no fewer than five English sides, the muscular Nigerian struck 139 goals in his 357 matches.

And his 96 top-flight strikes make him the joint-second highest scoring African in Premier League history.

    JAY JAY OKOCHA

OKOCHA was a rare spark of creative verve in a functional Bolton side moulded together by Sam Allardyce
The Trotters’ fans fell so in love with their Nigerian midfielder that they sported t-shirts bearing the slogan “Jay Jay Okocha — so good they named him twice.”

It was a sentiment shared by Big Sam, who even named him captain in the season he led the Lancashire side to the League Cup final.

Not that Jay Jay was grateful — he threw a strop and demanded a big-money move to Qatar in 2006.

    NWANKWO KANU

LANKY Nigerian Kanu had already turned out for European giants Ajax and Inter Milan when he landed at Arsenal in 1998.
And he had one Premier League title under his belt when he was part of the Gunners’ Invincibles side that went unbeaten during the 2003-4 season.

Add two FA Cup victories for the North London side, and a Cup-winner’s medal for Portsmouth in 2008 and you have yourselves a bona fide Premier League legend.

    MICHAEL ESSIEN

CHELSEA’S midfield enforcer during the most successful period in the club’s history.
Ghanaian Essien made 256 appearances and won two titles in West London following his move from Lyon in 2005.

His strike against Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final in 2009 might not have been enough to secure the Blues a final slot, but it did win Chelsea's goal of the season.

    YAYA TOURE

THE more talented of the Ivory Coast’s Toure brothers, Yaya had huge expectations thrust upon him following a big-money move from Barcelona.
But the 6ft 2ins Manchester City star justified the tag with title-winning performances in 2011/12 and 2013/14.

During the latter, Toure slammed home in incredible 24 goals in 49 matches — and all from midfield.

    EMMANUEL ADEBAYOR

    THE one-season wonder.
ogo striker Adebayor has earned a reputation for bagging a hatful during his first season, and then going into hibernation the next.

The 31-year-old did it at Man City, he did it at Real Madrid and he did it at Tottenham. Crystal Palace will be hoping he turns on the afterburners to save their season this term.

But during his four years at Arsenal, Adebayor was a formidable force. With 62 goals in 142 games — including 30 in one season — he joins Yakubu as the joint second highest scoring African in the Premier League.

    DIDER DROGBA

IVORIAN Drogba was just as much the face of Chelsea’s golden era as was John Terry and Frank Lampard.
The battering ram striker hit 164 goals in 381 appearances for the Stamford Bridge side — the most of any African play in the Prem.

In the 2009/10 season alone he struck 37 times in 44 matches.

But his influence at the Bridge amounted to more than just goals.

He won four Premier League titles, four FA Cups and hit the crucial late goal to send the 2012 Champions League final against Bayern Munich into extra time.

And, almost inevitably, he slotted in the deciding penalty in the ensuing shoot-out.

Such was Drogba’s influence in the Chelsea dressing room that Roman Abramovich is set to offer him a coaching role once he finishes his playing career in Canada at Montreal Impact
