Young Dheeraj Vaidya has done a Guy Ritchie in ‘Jil Jung Juk’ presenting Tamil cinema’s first real dark comedy. The story begins in 2020 when an economic meltdown has destroyed normal life and drug peddlers and fuel barons rule the world. A drug mafia leader Deivanayagam (R. Amarendran) with the help of scientist Marunthu (K. Bhagavathi Perumal) and Pai (Bipin) finds an ingenious way of transporting cocaine by painting it on an old Ambassador car. The task of taking the candy pink car to Hyderabad and hand it over to waiting Chinese mafia is given to three conmen Jil (Siddharth) Jung (Avinash Raghudevan) and Juk (Sananth). What follows is a hilarious macho ride that keeps audiences in splits right till the very end. A couple of weeks ago, it was really sad to see an actor of Siddharth’s caliber reduced to a glorified extra in ‘Aranmanai 2’ but what a remarkable turnaround he has achieved in ‘Jil Jung Juk’ as the smooth talking, unscrupulous gold digger Jil is easily his best performance till date. Be it the scenes he shams courage or the nonchalant air he puts on in one no-escape situation after another is a treat to watch as he completely gets into a character which is new to Tamil cinema. Sananth as Juk gives a smooth performance and watch out for the scene in which he playfully burns down a petrol mine. Avinash Raghudevan as Jung is another actor who uses minimal expressions to great comedic effect. An entire sequence belongs to him when he trains a rogue to pose as a Ugandan. Radharavi relieved from the Nadigar Sangam duties is back where he belongs and makes his presence felt as the ruthless Rolex Rawther who brings down the house when he sadly quips how in a matter of minutes both his immovable assets and moveable assets are destroyed. Amarendran as Deiva is the only serious character in the film and has done a good job. Bhagavathi Perumal’s Marunthu, Bipin’s Pai, Naga’s Narasimhan, Sai Dheena’s Attack are all fresh and well written characters who guarantee laughter every time they appear not to forget a police inspector who records himself with a camcorder and the delightful cameo appearances from Nassar, R.J. Balaji and the only female cast member Jasmin Baasin as the actress Sonu Sawanth. Cinematographer Shreyas Krishna deserves a pat on his back for setting the mood with the right play of lights and movements. Editor Krutz Snider is another winner who has given clean cuts in spite of the experimental nature of the film, which uses graphics, comic strips, title cards and unconventional narrative. Music director Vishal Chandrashekar is the backbone of ‘Jil Jung Juk’ complementing the director’s vision with his outstanding background score and the foot tapping songs. Stunt choreographer Shakthi Saravanan has a lot of work in the film, which he has executed well, especially the final shoot out which is aesthetically choreographed and shot. Art Director Shivashankar has created set pieces that suit the genre to perfection. Producer Siddharth started his career by being the first to work with a short film director in Balaji Mohan’s ‘Kadhalil Sothappuvadhu Eppadi’ and with ‘Jil Jung Juk’ he has once again pioneered a new genre and has left no stone unturned to bring the script to the screen. Dheeraj Vaidy is a welcome addition to the list of path breaking young directors in Tamil cinema. Along with co-writer Mohan Ramakrishnan he has perfectly set up a story, characters and plot that stays true to the genre. It is commendable that Dheeraj has infused elements of humor in every bit of voiceover, comic strip, title card and subtitle and for extracting neat performances from every cast member. The director also sets the right expectation to his audience in the very beginning and hence the question of logic never arises. On the downside the film no doubt caters to male audiences but the question remains if it is suitable for women and children audiences who may not take to the high testosterone display, the adult humor and the theme of drugs. The film is set in 2020 a very near future from now where it is highly unlikely for the world to turn into what the film depicts. Verdict : You can have a boys day out and enjoy a whale of a time with ‘Jil Jung Juk’ Rating: 3.8 / 5.0
