The theme of ACTION HERO BIJU is the same as that of Goutham Menon's acclaimed film KAKKA KAKKA. Both tell the story of the policeman's life and his sacrifices. But the similarities end with the theme and the hero's costumes in song sequences. ACTION HERO BIJU, in contrast with Goutham Menon's film takes the humorous route in showing the day to day life of a police officer.

The screenplay follows the rather experimental model set by AMAR AKBAR ANTONY. That is the film does not have a single storyline in the traditional sense with the inciting incident in Act 1, Confrontation in Act 2 followed by resolution in Act 3. Instead what we see is different and distinct events in the everyday life of a Sub Inspector of Police, the obstacles he has to face and the problems he has to solve in the course of discharging his duties. In spite of the scant respect given to screenwriting canons, the film makes an entertaining watch.

Though Nivin Pauly has convincingly given life to the character of Sub Inspector Biju in most scenes, there are a number of scenes in which his shortcomings come to the fore. At the very beginning of the film we hear the hero's voice as voice over before he is introduced on screen and one can't help commenting that it sounded like that of an eighteen year old boy rather than that of a police officer. And in scenes where he tries to deliver'heavy' dialogues and intimidate others by shouting we find him unequal to the task. On watching those scenes we realize unapproachable heights of the standards set by Mohanlal, Mammootty and Suresh Gopi in onscreen performance in scenes that set the screen on fire. The director hides the limitations of Nivin Pauly in such scenes by the clever use of a thunder like background noise which traverses the theatre from one end to the other.

When compared to earlier police films ACTION HERO BIJU is the most realistic one. Though realistic, the film shows a highly idealized version of the police force. In addition to the protagonist all the policemen in the station as well as the higher officials are shown as non corrupt, honest and sincere to the profession. And see how easily Biju ensures that the wealthy and influential guy was taken to task! As we all know, this is far from reality. Perhaps this distortion of reality which resulted in showing the force in a favourable light was what pleased the DGP and Home Minister so much that they ended up heaping praises on it.

The actors who played minor characters gave splendid performances. Especially Suraj Venjaramood justified the national award he won through an amazing performance which drew the biggest applause from the crowd.
