'Kanithan' Movie Review & Rating: The Mathematician In You! Overall View: Kanithan is definitely entertaining and has all the commercial elements coupled with an interesting plot. A tighter screenplay by director TN Santhosh sans the formulaic way of making a Tamil film would've made this, more than just watchable. KANITHAN MOVIE REVIEW AR Murugadoss’s protégé TN Santhosh makes his directorial debut with Kanithan, a suspense action thriller about a television reporter who tries to bring down a fake document criminal gang. As far as these suspense action genre goes, when the film provides a right mix of commercial elements, it is bound to work big. So has the mathematician (Kanithan) got his calculations right? Glance down to find out. After a sluggish start the film picks up speed once the story is established and from there on it is rollercoaster ride till the end of the first half. The second half of Kanithan holds you but doesn’t grip you as one might expect, after a fast paced first half. While it is occasionally predictable, there are a few scenes that might surprise you. Atharvaa is fresh from the success of Eetti and he would like to keep up the momentum going. The guy is turning into a full time action hero at the age of 26. Why should he not? He looks super fit, has a great screen presence for his age. To carry a script like this on his shoulders at such an early stage of his career and that too quite convincingly requires some level of conviction. The cat and mouse game between the hero and the antagonist works well. Jab We Met fame Tarun Arora plays the main villain here and he looks like the typical classy looking devious baddie that you find in AR Murugadoss films. Though the approach and the treatment look original and different, you will find some uncanny resemblances with Vijay’s Thuppakki, especially during the investigation scenes and the pre-interval block fight portions. Humor scenes don’t work much so were the love portions. A couple of songs could have been easily put away with. The songs and romance play spoilsport as it completely slows down the narration and also deviates the attention of the audience from the core plot. Particularly ‘Modern Ponnathan’ comes in as a huge roadblock. ‘Yappa Chappa’ is easily the best and the most catchy number from the film. The stunt sequences are one of the most captivating facets of the film. Dhilip Subbarayan must be credited for such lively and intriguing display of high octane stunts of the highest order. Chase and fight scenes were very well-choreographed. There is nothing that we haven’t seen here before in terms of suspense or chases but the core theme is fresh and carries some kick to it. What could have been an intelligent crackerjack suspense entertainer ends up being a medially engaging product due to few lackluster moments and some sluggish screenplay in the second half. Despite its flaws, this savvy thriller is worth watching once mainly for some exhilarating action sequences, Atharvaa’s top class performance and a few adrenaline pumping moments. Verdict: Kanithan is an exciting action flick to watch, if you do not make a big deal out of its dull and redundant moments! Kanithan Review Atharvaa is a perfect fit for the role of the angry young man who uses his brains and brawn in equal measure and he has the right expressions for all the emotions, making him a cute little package who the girls would root for throughout. Catherine Tresa as the heroine looks fetching, but has little to do other than hang around the hero and dance for the two songs. Tarun Arora as the Burmese gangster who masterminds the fake educational certificate mafia is menacing. Veteran K.Bhagyaraj, Karunakaran and Sundar Ramu do justice to their roles as the allies of the hero. Arvind Krishna's cinematography is the biggest plus for the film while editor Bhuvan Srinivasan could have put the scissors to use in many scenes that seem never ending. Drums Sivamani in his second outing as music director has given some peppy numbers and the BGM by a newcomer is good with the drums dominating . Full marks to the fight choreographer who has done a great job with all the fights especially the one in which the villains ordinary looking son suddenly transforms into a lethal dynamo using his fists and legs to get Atharvaa in a tangle who matches him fist for fist and leg for leg. Writer-director T.N. Santhosh has ambitions of exposing the fake educations certificate racket that is very much prevalent in the country, but while transferring the story onto celluloid has missed the mark here and there. Having said that Santhosh has put in a lot of efforts to authentically show how a fake certificate is produced and all the related scenes are interesting. The heavily clichéd opening scenes establishing the hero and the following love scenes between Catherine and Atharvaa are rank boring and the director loses the audiences there itself, though they are jolted back into the story when the hero is arrested on such a serious charge. The film sustains interest for a while after that, but the 80s styled functioning of the hero, that too an accused out on bail gets wherever he wants and even has the police doing his bidding defies logic ,hampering the screenplay and it struggles to recover. The director conveniently forgets to deal with what happened to the bank loan issue which seemed to be the main plot point. Verdict : Watch ‘Kanithan’ for Atharvaa Murali and the well choreographed action sequences. Rating: 2.5 / 5.0 http://www.indiaglitz.com/kanithan-tamil-movie-review-19486.html
