Director Sameer C. Thahir’s 'Kali', starring Dulquer Salmaan and Sai Pallavi in the lead, traces the journey of an angry young man.


Kali is all the rage in Mollywood, even before its release in theatres on Saturday (March 26). And why not? It’s a Sameer C. Thahir movie, coming almost two-and-a-half years after the path-breaking cinematographer-director last helmed a film, road movie Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi. Kali is a Dulquer Salmaan film, his first release following his state award-winning act in Charlie. If that’s not enough, the equally gorgeous Sai Pallavi is the heroine of the film, in what is her first appearance on screen after wowing audiences as Malar inPremam. If the trailer of Kali is any indication of the expectations (1.8 million views and counting!), it’s a cracker of a combination, the lanky duo’s chemistry, particularly, sizzling on screen.

Sameer, though, is not overly fazed. “There’s no point worrying about expectations. I’m just making my film, the way I want to. From what they infer from the trailer, people would have made up their minds about the film or even sketched out the possible storyline in their minds. I don’t understand their logic but you can’t blame them for it, either; it’s what fans/movie buffs all over the world do, all the time. Let me just remind them that the trailer is not the whole thing,” says the director.

What’s really piqued the interest of the audience is the theme of the movie – anger; of the unadulterated, hot-headed, passive-aggressive, irresistible kind that hasn’t been seen on the Malayalam screen for long. Its protagonist, Siddharth (Dulquer), is the angry young man, prone to flying off the handle at every small instance. “Siddharth is temperamental rather than rebellious and he has been so from his childhood onwards. But he doesn’t blow his top just for the sake of it; there’s always a reason behind his outbursts. He’s a regular guy dealing with life and all its positives and negatives. The only thing is that his anger is out of control. In fact, Siddharth is a victim of his anger,” says Sameer.

Kali traces Siddharth’s journey from childhood to his college years to the present day, his life as a married man, with a responsible job. “He is a banker in Kochi; a job that puts him in contact with all kinds of people, who need to be handled with kid gloves. Not exactly ideal a job for someone who is quick tempered,” says Sameer. The director seems thoroughly pleased with his star. “As an actor Dulquer has grown tremendously from when we last worked together in Neelakasham…The role of Siddharth demands a different kind of intensity than the brooding Kasi, the hero of Neelakasham. Dulquer was able to deliver it in every single shot,” says Sameer.

The film has been scripted by newbie Rajesh Gopinadhan. The makers say that Kali’s a very realistic movie, “which everyone can relate to.” Perhaps it’s because we come across people like Siddharth every day, particularly the youth…? “Every other person these days is angry about something or the other.Kali has a lot of real-life situations that we face in our daily lives,” says Sameer. “We see people like that on the road, in queues, in shops… Often, they would be reacting to some perceived injustice; expressing anger out of genuine concern. Siddharth is one such person. He is a good soul. His anger is not at all negative,” explains Rajesh. The makers are keen to stress that the film’s not only about anger. “It’s also about love, the realities of life, of married life, especially. It’s a commercial entertainer,” adds Rajesh.

Sai Pallavi is Anjali, Siddharth’s college sweetheart, later his wife. Anjali is a Malayali whose family is settled in picturesque Masinagudi in the Nilgiri hills. “Anjali is the calm to Siddharth’s storm, as welcoming and outgoing a person as Siddharth is not,” says Sameer. Of his heroine too Sameer has much to say. “I found her to be an intelligent artiste. She was gung ho about the film right from when we approached her for the role, because she said she knows family members who are like Siddharth. As she plays a Malayali, it was a bit of a struggle for her to talk in Malayalam, initially, but she is a performer and pulled it off with élan. She’s even dubbed in Malayalam for the film,” says Sameer.

The film’s been shot by a Sameer favourite, cinematographer Gireesh Gangadharan. Gopi Sundar has composed the music. It’s is produced by Ashiq Usman, Shyju Khalid and Sameer himself, under the banner of Hand Made Films. Kali will be released across the country with English subtitles.
