One thing that needs to be appreciated is director Aashiq Abu's courage in thinking out of the box and travelling away from the conventional method of presentation when it came to intense love stories. Mayaanadhi , the latest from Aashiq breaks the traditional narrative pattern and tells romance between Maathan and Aparna where the latter's response to her lover fluctuates and swing like a pendulum.
Though I did like the movie I should also admit the slow nature and lagness with overstretched scenes did acted as mood dampening things for me. This is one film I felt is not everyone's cup of tea. If you like changes, then Maayanadhi is all yours or else you might find some sort of discomfort in watching.
The story unfold around the romance between Mathew aka Maathen who is an Engineering graduate and Aparna an aspiring actress , affectionately called as Appu by Maathen. Both of them have a breakdown of relationship at one point and circumstances force the lovers to meet again. What force Maathen to travel from Mangalore to Kochi to meet his ex-lover and the situations that unfold thereafter are what Maayanadhi discuss.
Scripted by Syam Pushkaran and Dileesh Nair, Maayanadhi has that realistic tone all over it. When it came to the narrative part there are two parallel narratives that are running simultaneously. One is the volatile love track and the other is an investigation connected with Hawala cash and murder. Now the writing team and the director have presented both these areas with zero tolerance on melodrama.
But one thing I wasn't convinced or rather confused is with the manner in which Aparna changes her attitude towards Maathen minute by minute. May be this is my ignorance of not catching something that was conveyed about the mood swings at some point in the film.
Maathen's character was an apt casting and it was in safe hands of Tovino who brought out that non matured feel to the role in the best possible fashion. Aishwarya Lekshmi whom we last saw in Njandukaluday Naattil Oridavela was given a role wherein the script offered her enough scope to perform. Also it was a bold selection from her in choosing this character that had some intimate scenes with her co-star. Harish Uthaman plays an investigative officer that looked totally convincing. Leona Lishoy as actress Sameera had very few scenes but even then she was able to create a space for herself and made it noticeable.
Making is one of the major highlight of this film. Rex Vijayan is at his best when it came to the BGM and songs. A certain level of standards had to be there for songs and background score if we look at the overall composition of the story and Rex was right up there with music that had the right feel and soul in it. Jayesh Mohan gave a totally different makeover and dimension to the movie with the frames he chose.
Leaving aside the snail paced nature of the story and some lagness when it came to the narrative, Mahanadhi has been given a fresh layer of treatment to a deep romantic relationship between two young people. I would say the film is not everyone's cup of tea as the treatment adopted to tell this plot is not the traditional approach that we are used to.
