Infinity War is an unprecedented movie. 19th film in a historic movie series. Supposedly, the beginning of the end for the current arc of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Kevin Feige can be proud. Under his tutelage, MCU has become the biggest brand in global cinema. Russo brothers have hit another ace with Infinity War. The movie does hit the right notes and largely fulfills the tremendous expectations.

MCU has been rather weak on good villains. Eventhough it started of with an awesome one in Loki with Thor and the Avengers movie, none of the other villains impressed me barring Zemo in Civil War and Killmonger in Black Panther. Vulture form Spiderman Homecoming was quite good too. But Thanos has steamrolled the competition and is comfortably on top of the list villains. His motivations are understandable but deranged to be associated with. His methods are logical. His patience is admirable. He rarely falters and has an answer to everything the good guys throw at him. Formidable villain. Though completely in CGI, Thanos shows a lot of emotions and the presence of Josh Brolin behind the purple face in unmistakable.

The downside of an event film like this is the lack of presence for most characters. There simply isn't enough time. That said, Thor gets a lot of screen time and he does a fantastic job. The growth of the character has been really good and follows up on an excellent Thor 3. Gamora from Guardians of the Galaxy plays a central role as the adopted daughter of Thanos. We get to explore her relationship with Thanos and the scenes are integral to the characterization of Thanos. Gamora makes you feel for Thanos. Something you never thought would happen. The other guardians get lesser screentime but does a good job. Except for Star Lord. The writing with respect to Star Lord is one of the low points and equivalent to a deus ex machina. That could have been easily avoided and made to look Thanos as even more powerful rather than make Star Lord into a chump.

Tony Stark gets a lot of screentime as does Peter Parker. Surprisingly, Captain America does not get much screentime as you would think along with his band of rebels. Doctor Strange and Vision hold the infinity stones and as expected they are featured quite prominently. Wakanda is the sight of a big battle, but Wakandan characters get minimal time to rest. They are fighting for most of the time. After a while, it gets really hard to keep track of everyone. Not the fault of the makers. They have done the best they could within the confines of a traditional movie. The performers too give their best shot.

The climax is something you want to happen when you have a powerful villain like Thanos. The deaths in this movie though are not something you expect. Most people who die will most likely comeback. Marvel has simply moved the hard decisions to the next year's Avenger movie. So yes. This is definitely part 1 of a double finale despite the claims of not being so. That said, the ending is not abrupt.

The direction is a masterclass in storytelling with so many characters. The character interactions are hilarious. Thor+Rocket is something you never thought would see and is delightful as you would think. Similarly, the action scenes with Spidey, Dr Strange, and Iron Man are also very well done. Cinematography is on point. The CGI looks terrific. Sound design and background music deserve a lot of appreciation.

So what is next? Antman and Wasp this year will be set just before the events of Infinity War. Next years Captain Marvel will set in 80s-90s and will introduce Captain Marvel before she supposedly plays a major role in the next Avengers. You have to wait until 2019 to see how this all plays out. How Marvel deals with the deaths and adds more to the tally. It will be a long wait. If the Russo brothers shine again, the next Avengers should better this one.

    Rating: 4.5/5

TL;DR: Avengers: Infinity War is a terrific movie that ticks most of the points in tems of expectations. Must watch and a visual treat.
