We have seen quite a number of films that looked very ordinary in the beginning and is saved by unexpected twists towards the latter stages with some decent climax. Abrahaminte Santhathikal is one such film thats falls in that category that runs as a normal film but the surprising elements towards the finishing stage and a good climax portions puts it on a safe and watchable zone. Written by Haneef Adeni (who had earlier directed The Great Father with Mammootty) and directed by Shaji Padoor (who is making his debut as an independent film maker) the makers have got their acts together to make the film decent enough for a one time watch.

Derek Abraham (played by Mammootty) is a successful police officer. Whenever the department gets a case which is hard to crack, Derek is the goto man to solve the mystery of various case who gives paramount importance to duty first with no place for sentiments and relationships. The film begins with a series of murders with a typical pattern with some biblical reference. The presence of a serial killer is shown and obviously it is Derek who is handed the case dairy after initial investigation. From here the film gradually moves to Derek's brother Philip and the relationship shared between the two. If I write further about the story, I will have to reveal few more things that will be a spoiler and hence stopping right here.

Shaji Padoor has given a slow buildup to the film. So naturally the pacing is affected in the initial stages giving way to some lagness. But this is compensated by a better second half and a decent culmination of the proceedings. This helps in getting relief and satisfaction in the end. Its a slow paced thriller with suspense elements retained almost till the end. The twists that we see towards the finishing line wasn't that complex to guess but nevertheless it was a fair enough ending leaving no place for complaints.

Direction is good and Shaji has done a decent job as a maker with the screenplay he had. Making of the film is one of the highlights here. Screenplay lacked logics at some areas and there are some loopholes and unanswered questions that went unplugged but all is well that ends well goes the saying. So if we are ready to accept those slipups, you would find the film good for a single watch.

I would say the posters, teaser and trailers were a bit misleading as they conveyed the film to be a thrilling and stylishly made mass film full of energy. There are thrilling moments, there is style in the overall makeover but there is very little of mass elements. The protagonist as we would expect from the promos would be spotting a larger than life character. Even the introduction of Derek Abraham in the film conveyed such a thought. But it is not so as Derek Abraham is a normal person and he doesn't have a mass appeal in the film. Of course, he has his own style to everything he does which was nicely depicted.

There wasn't a single scene that could challenge the actor in Mammootty. It was all a cakewalk for him but there was control in whatever he was doing. He was playing his age and that was welcome. The actor looked handsome (well that's a clichéd statement these days, we know his age is in reverse gear and I just echoed that fact again) and stylish as always.

Anson Paul got a meaty role probably for the first time in his brief career in Mollywood. He can improve but he made his presence felt. Kalabhavan Shajon was effective as a police officer while the ladies Kaniha and Tarushi didn't have a bigger role to play. Renji Panicker, Suresh Krishna, Sohan Seenulal and Siddhique are also part of the supporting casts. Technically, the movie resembles The Great Father. Making style is impressive with good support from Alby, the cameraman with each and every frame looking nice on screen. Mahesh Narayanan has done a decent job with the editing works. Gopi Sundar's background score was heavier and blended well with the situations. I liked the devotional song 'Yersalem Naayaka' sung by Sreya Jayadeep.

Abrahaminte Santhathikal is not a great thriller but it isn't a disappointment either and is a watchable flick. Looked ordinary for the first one hour but the next hour compensates for that. This ultimately changed the viewing experience for the better thereby facilitating the film to land in a safe zone.

    Rating - 3 / 5
