Indrajith’s Aaha inspired by Kerala’s greatest tug-of-war team

Mollywood’s attraction to sports dramas this year seems to have intensified. After Rajisha’s Finals and Kunchacko Boban, Nithya Menen’s untitled film, Indrajith’s Aaha is the next in the list to haul the trend.The upcoming sports drama revolving around vadam vali (tug of war) is inspired by a true story, says editor Bibin Paul Samuel, who will be making his directorial debut with the film. “The main location of the movie will be the village of Neeloor, Kottayam, as the story revolves around rustic characters who do manual work such as rubber tapping and catering in the day. In the night, however, these people are superstars because of the tug-of-war games,” he says.On the title of the film, Bibin, who had worked as an editor in films such as Oru Murai Vanthu Parthaaya and 101 Chodyangal, says, “Aaha Neeloor is one of the most popular tug-of-war teams in Kerala. The team was formed in the 90s and for about 15 years, they were on top of the game. In the 2008 season, out of the 73 games, they won a record 72. So, their team was the inspiration for the movie.”Explaining why he picked a sports drama revolving around tug-of-war for his directorial debut, the filmmaker says, “Today, 63 countries around the world play tug-of-war, but in India, it’s most prominent in Kerala. There’s a vadam vali competition being held every day in each of our 14 districts. Close to 600 tournaments are held every season and there are about 1,000 officially registered teams, so that’s how popular the sport is. Probably why a lot of people do not know about it is because all these tournaments are held in the night.”The team is currently planning to begin filming in September. Apart from Indrajith, Ashwin Kumar will also be seen in a pivotal character in the film, which will also have close to 50 debutants in various roles. Tobit Chirayath has scripted the film and Sayonara Philip will handle the music department.As the tagline of the movie reads, "The war within," the movie might showcase the internal struggle of a Vadamvali star. Prem Abraham is backing the project that has been scripted by Tobit Chiraayathhas and will have Rahul Balachandran cranking the lens with Sayanora Philip composing the music. Bibin Paul Samuel himself will manage the edits for the movie expected to be a sports drama.
