Christopher Nolan is arguably one of the greatest directors of our time. I would put my money on all time as well. An auteur to the core with an exceptional track record. Dunkirk continues more of the same yet more of the different.

On the outset, Dunkirk seems a lot less innovative than his previous films. Yet another World War II movie. Once you watch it, you realize how wrong you have been. You feel a bit disconnected at first while watching the movie. The nonlinear narrative is a reason. The narrative comprises of the view of the war from the land, sea, and the air. The three portions have three different timelines. The narrative blends so well towards the end like the last few bits of a jigsaw puzzle falls into places so easily. But a bigger reason for the disconnect is the sheer messiness of it all. 400,000 men fighting a war, but desperate to save their skin. The usual trope of an all-sacrificing soldier doesn't come into the play that much, but not absent as well (and revealing too much would be a spoiler). Desperation is the key here. Nolan plays it up really well with a lot of intense moments and exceptional sound effects.

Cinematography, as usual, is brilliant. Nolan has literally "spared no expense", in this department. The Spitfire gliding gloriously in the climax is an absolute treat to watch. Sound design as I mentioned previously is integral to the experience. Ironically, for a movie short on dialogues, the music takes a backseat. BGM blends in the background without standing out at all. For those who complain about too much exposition in Nolan's movies can rejoice. You can find some other trope for your criticisms.

All the acting performances are good. Characterization is surprisingly well done for a short movie with many characters and little dialogue. Tom Hardy for me takes the cake with yet another masked performance. Fionn Whitehead, Aneurin Barnard, and Harry Styles are impressive as young soldiers. Mark Rylance gives a notable performance as the civilian captain. His character and his performance showcased the undying spirit that finally won the car. A sincere, earnest, and endearing character.

TL;DR: Dunkirk is a stunning film that begs to be seen on the biggest screen and heard with the best sound system.

    Rating: 9.5/10

My personal Nolan top five would be The Prestige > Inception > The Dark Knight > Memento > Dunkirk. Dunkirk being number five is a not a knock on its quality, but the sheer brilliance of Christopher Nolan.
