Rangoon has taken a very poor start of around 10-15% on the morning shows. It was not expected to start well as these sorts find it tough and on top there is a director like Vishal Bharadwaj where the youth audience in big cities is aware what sort of cinema he makes (smaller centres and single screens audience are probably not aware but the film is not for them anyway) and on top a cast like Shahid Kapoor, Kangana Ranuat and Saif Ali Khan who need far better promos and music to bring in an audience as even combined the box office clout is limited. Still even allowing for this the opening is even lower than what one would have expected.

There is a holiday for Mahashivratri in parts of the country and that may help collections somewhat and with such a low start and on top a film which is not really for the morning audience the collections are going to improve as the day goes along but the fear is if the improvement if the expected improvement does not come then the first day may turn out to be a bit of a shocker. The film has to reach double digits on Saturday or Sunday (preferably Saturday) but that looks very on this opening.

The other films released this Friday 9' O Clock, Mona Darling and Wedding Anniversary have gone the way as these non awareness film nearly always go and that is zero audience.

Rangoon had a very low opening day of 4.75-5 crore nett as per early estimates which makes it tough for the film considering this came with the aid of Mahashivatri which helped collections in the North. The film was not expected to open well due to the promos, music and cast but still it should have done more than it has got. The film recorded very low collections all over but the performance in Delhi / UP and East Punjab was better due to Mahashivratri but there is a flip side as these circuits have strong growth on Saturday and now the growth may be less compared to other places due to the bump up in collections on Friday. Mumbai is just a little higher than Delhi / UP when Mumbai should be 50% ahead.

A film like this needs the actor to bring something to the table but the problem here is that Saif Ali Khan has never been much of a draw barring films with the top heroines of the time or double /multiple hero films and Shahid Kapoor has pretty much eroded whatever following he had with the youth with bad films like Haider and Udta Punjab. So when the promos don't appeal and actors have no pulling power you get results like Rangoon. Its just seven weeks and now two big films have disappointing big time in terms of opening, Kaabil and Rangoon. Kaabil may have an excuse as it clashed with Raees but there is no such issue with Rangoon.

There is the weekend still to come and the film may get growth over Saturday and Sunday but it will be a surprise if it gets the growth it needs to comeback into the box office picture again.

Rangoon has come and gone and suffered a disastrous fate and the fall out will be that the leads will not get a film with a considerable budget as main lead for sometime if ever unless they produce it themselves. There can be 100 of reasons given for the disastrous fate but basically its bad cinema and the chances are always there of it going bad. There have been so many examples over the last two years. Below are the figures of the last five films of Shahid Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan and it is R... Rajkumar and Humshakals which come on top and these films are not exactly good films either but compared to the others they have a genre (action and comedy) which the audience gives a chance too. Also these collections of R... Rajkumar have not come because of a Shahid Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan but despite them as they probably don't have the acting talent to carry this sort of commercial cinema and were the weakest points of both films. Put an Akshay Kumar in either of these films and on a worse case scenario you can add 50% to their business with the content not changing one bit. The box office collections of these actors shows the potential of audience friendly cinema even if it goes wrong and on top with huge miscasting.

What actors have to remember is they can only survive on numbers. A 20 crore film can do 40 crore nett and be a plus and a 100 crore film can do 100 crore nett and be losing but for the actor the 100 crore nett film is the winner as it shows you can get a number and when a Rangoon happens it makes the latter an impossible task while the former is not of any use to the actor.

    Shahid Kapoor (last five films)

    Rangoon 20,00,00,000 (expected)

    Udta Punjab - 58,14,00,000

    Shaandaar - 39,48,00,000

    Haider - 49,14,00,000

    R.. Rajkumar - 65,99,00,000

Saif Ali Khan (last five films)

    Rangoon 20,00,00,000 (expected)

    Phantom - 51,44,00,000

    Happy Ending - 22,31,00,000

    Humshakals - 53,73,00,000

    Bullet Raja - 32,75,00,000

Rangoon continued its disaster run on Tuesday with collections of 1.25 crore nett apprx. The film has now grossed 17 crore nett in five days and the first week will close at around 19-19.25 crore nett and that will probably be it. The weekday occupancy is going to average around 7-8% on an all India level and that ensures its just a one week run at most theatres. The final business of the film will be lower than a film like OK Jaanu and that pretty much paints the picture of the sad state of Rangoon. The business of the film till date is as follows.

    Friday - 5,06,00,000

    Saturday - 4,75,00,000

    Sunday - 4,50,00,000

    Monday - 1,40,00,000

    Tuesday - 1,25,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL - 16,96,00,000 apprx
