Khalidh Rahman the director continues to impress. That's the first impression that I got after each scenes from his second directorial started unfolding on screen. The film to its credit is having a very catchy and curious title and is blessed to have the presence of Mammootty as the protagonist. Anuraga Karikkin Vellam that happened exactly three years back is still in our memories and is one film that stood out for a polished presentation of a heartwarming story.

When it comes to UNDA, the director (who is credited with the story of the film) has chosen a totally different background and genre compared to his debut flick. And the result of Unda is also a sign pointing to another captivating and convincing piece of work. Unda is a realistic film with a quiet and slow build-up and in the process of narrating the story throw light on an array of relevant subjects for our thinking .

The film is shot in Chattisgarh, Karnataka and also Kerala and the plot is set in Chattisgargh. A group of policemen lead by Sub-Inspector Manikandan is sent to a tribal area in Chattisgarh for overseeing Elections. A big contingent from Kerala break into different groups and finally a group of nine is formed. All the incidents that unfold after the group takes charge is what Unda narrate. And the film is partly based on real incidents that happened a few years ago.

The initial makeover of the film was giving me an impression that Unda was having similarities with Rajkumar Rao's critically acclaimed film Newton. Of course, the protagonist in both the films belong to different profession and comes from totally different background but the maoist set up, Election and rigging of elections was pushing my mind to speculate that Unda is a distant cousin of Newton. But that speculation was soon laid to rest as the film progressed. Let me assure you Unda stands on its own and is thoroughly backed by a story of its own though the premise of both are similar.

As a film, Unda doesn't have to its credit unfolding of major incidents nor any surprising turn of events every now and then. It uses the base story it is telling to tell indirectly some serious and thought-provoking topics of relevance. Issues of tribal people, election process happening in Northern India, booth rigging and tampering of ballots are some of the subjects that gets told as the film reach its destination. Plight of the security staffs on election duty are also shown but in a lighter vein. Pacing of the whole film is very slow but there is no place of boredom whatsoever.

A sort of fear about the maoist presence is created from the start and the film progressed through the situational humour connected with the policemen on duty. The screenplay and its execution is able to convey the whole mood of the film from the very beginning and maintain that tone right till the end. All the characters gets instantly connected with the premise very early and have been given prominence without focussing on certain people or certain actors. On that note, I should say even Mammootty's character Mani is on equal footing with the rest.

Mammootty appears as a very ordinary man without a pinch of heroism in a less glamorous role. Sub-Inspector Mani is a loveable character who looks like he is one among us. Though he is a policeman, he goes through the emotions and feels for the bad things happening around him. Though there were no scenes that challenged the actor, certain sequences required his presence and he presented Mani in a very simple manner to make it so real and believable.

And as I said earlier, the other actors also gets their space in the screenplay. Actors like Shine Tom Chacko, Arjun Asokhan, Rony David and the rest of the actors who are part of the nine member group will make us like them even if some of them are having very less dialogues or screen space. Renjith in a brief role was impressive and his combination scenes with Mammootty came out so well. Unda is a technically sound film and two major areas that supported on that front apart from the making style are cinematography and background score. The night shots were all effective and in some of the scenes with the help of sound design and with no BGM's, silence was used to elevate the mood of those situations.

Unda entertain the audience but not through the usual entertaining elements that we are used to seeing especially from a film that has the presence of a big star. It is lighter but serious, it is humorous but makes us think and in the end it makes a definite impact. Khalidh Rahman's execution is a brightspot among a few other impactful areas putting the film into the league of good and impactful films to have come out of Mollywood.

ഖാലിദ്‌ റഹ്മാന്റെ റിയലിസ്റ്റിക്ക്‌, ക്ലാസി 'ഉണ്ട'.

ഇലക്ഷൻ ഡ്യൂട്ടിക്കായി കേരളത്തിൽ നിന്ന് അത്യാവശ്യത്തിനു മാത്രം ഉണ്ടകളുമായി ചത്തിസ്‌ ഗഡ്ഡിലെ ബസ്താറിലേക്‌ പോകുന്ന ഒരു കൂട്ടം പോലീസുകാരുടെ അവസ്ഥയാണ്‌ 'ഉണ്ട'.

എടുത്ത്‌ പറയാൻ പാകത്തിന്‌ സംഭവവികാസങ്ങൾ ഒന്നും ഇല്ലായിരുന്നുവെങ്കിലും ആദ്യ പകുതി റോക്കറ്റ്‌ സ്പീഡിലായിരുന്നു തീർന്നത്‌. സിറ്റുവേഷണൽ നർമ്മങ്ങൾ എല്ലാം രസകരമായിരുന്നു. ആദ്യ കുറച്ച്‌ സമയം കൊണ്ട്‌ തന്നെ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾ തമ്മിലുള്ള ഇഴയടുപ്പം ക്രിസ്റ്റൽ ക്ലിയറാക്കി ഡെലിവർ ചെയ്തത്‌ നന്നായിരുന്നു.

എല്ലാ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾക്കും ആവശ്യത്തിനു സ്പേയ്സ്‌ അവകാശപ്പെടാൻ കഴിയുന്ന ചിത്രമാണ്‌ ഉണ്ട.അസാമാന്യ പ്രകടനങ്ങൾ കാഴ്ച വെക്കാനും വിധമുള്ള കഥാപാത്രരൂപീകരണം അല്ലായിരുന്നുവെങ്കിലും എല്ലാവരും നന്നായി തന്നെ ചെയ്തു.പ്രത്യേകിച്ച്‌ അർജ്ജുൻ അശോകൻ,ഷൈൻ ടോം ചാക്കോ, പേരറിയാത്ത സുഡാനിയിലെ ഡ്രൈവർ കഥാപാത്രം ചെയ്തയാൾ എന്നിവരുടേത്‌.രഞ്ജിത്തും മമ്മൂട്ടിയും ഒന്നിച്ച്‌ ഒരു ഫ്രെയിമിൽ കാണാൻ തന്നെ ഒരു ഭംഗിയുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. കുറേ നാളുകൾക്ക്‌ ശേഷം അമാനുഷികൻ അല്ലാത്ത മമ്മൂട്ടിയെ സ്ക്രീനിൽ കാണാനായി എന്നതിൽ സന്തോഷമുണ്ട്‌.വെടിയുണ്ടകളെ ഭയക്കുന്ന,ഇതുവരെ വെടി ഉതിർത്തിട്ടില്ലാത്ത തോക്കുകളെ എങ്ങനെ നേരിടണമെന്ന് മുൻ പരിചയമില്ലാത്ത എസ്‌.ഐ മണിയായി മമ്മൂട്ടി മികച്ച പ്രകടനമായിരുന്നു. ക്രൂണാൽ ചന്ദ്‌ ആയി വേഷമിട്ടയാളും നന്നായിരുന്നു.

പല സീനുകളെയും ബൂസ്റ്റ്‌ ചെയ്യുന്നതിൽ പ്രശാന്ത്‌ പിള്ളയുടെ ബാക്ഗ്രൗണ്ട്‌ സ്കോർ വഹിച്ച പങ്കും ചില്ലറയല്ല. പ്രത്യക്ഷത്തിൽ പൊള്ളയെന്ന് തോന്നുമെങ്കിലും ഇരുത്തി ചിന്തിക്കണ്ട പല വിഷയങ്ങളും ചിത്രം സംസാരിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്‌. പ്രത്യേകിച്ച്‌, വയനാട്ടിലെ ആളുകൾ നേരിടേണ്ടി വരുന്ന ഒറ്റപ്പെടലുകളും, നോർത്ത്‌ ഇന്ത്യയിലെ ഇലക്ഷൻ പ്രൊസീഡ്യേഴ്സും,കള്ളവോട്ടും, വോട്ട്‌ തിരിമറിയും, കേരളത്തിൽ നിന്ന് ഇലക്ഷൻ ഡ്യൂട്ടിക്കായി പോകുന്ന പോലീസുകാരുടെ അവസ്ഥയും മറ്റും നന്നായി പ്രതിപാദിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്‌.

ഖാലിദ്‌ റഹ്മാന്റെ രണ്ടാമത്തെ ചിത്രവും മികച്ചത്‌ തന്നെയാണെന്ന് നിസംശയം പറയുവാനാകും. താരതമ്യേന രണ്ടാം പകുതിയാണ്‌ മികച്ച്‌ നിന്നത്‌. കേരളാ പോലീസിന്‌ പിടിച്ച്‌ നിക്കാൻ ലാത്തി തന്നെ ധാരാളം എന്നും ചിത്രം പറയുന്നുണ്ട്‌. ആക്ഷൻ ഹീറോ ബിജു കാണിച്ച്‌ തന്നത്‌ റിയലിസ്റ്റിക്ക്‌ പോലീസ്‌ സ്റ്റേഷനും അനുബന്ധ സംഭവങ്ങളുമാണെങ്കിൽ 'ഉണ്ട'യിലത്‌ ഇലക്ഷൻ ഡ്യൂട്ടിയും അവസ്ഥകളും അവരുടെ കഷ്ടപ്പാടുകളുമാണ്‌. പ്രത്യേകിച്ച്‌, ഇതിന്റെ ബേസിക്ക്‌ ത്രെഡ്‌ നടന്നൊരു സംഭവം ആണെന്നത്‌ ഉണ്ടയുടെ മാറ്റ്‌ കൂട്ടുന്നു.

കട്ട മാസ്സും സ്റ്റൈലിഷ് സ്ലോ മോഷൻ നടത്തവും ത്രസിപ്പിക്കുന്ന ബിജിഎമ്മും പ്രതീക്ഷിച്ചു ഉണ്ട കാണാൻ പോവല്ല്... കാരണം ഇത് മമ്മൂക്ക എന്ന നടനെ തിരിച്ചുതന്ന ഖാലിദ് റഹ്മാൻ എന്ന യുവസംവിധായകന്റെ മാജിക്കാണ്. ഉത്തരേന്ത്യയിലെ മാവോയിസ്റ്റാക്രമണവും ഇലക്ഷൻ ബൂത്താക്രമണവും പോലുള്ള ഒരുകോളം വാർത്തകളിൽ നാം കണ്ടുപോരുന്ന സംഭവവികാസങ്ങളുടെ യാഥാർഥ്യങ്ങളിലേക്കുള്ള ഒരെത്തിനോട്ടം. മണ്ണിനുവേണ്ടി പോരാടി വീരമൃത്യുവരിച്ചവർക്കിടയിൽ നാം വിസ്മരിച്ചുകളയുന്ന മണ്ണ് നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടവരുടെ ദുഃഖത്തിന്റെയും രോഷത്തിന്റെയും നിഷ്കളങ്കതയുടെയും വേദനയുടെയും പ്രഹരത്തിൽ ചങ്കിൽ തറയ്ക്കുന്ന ഉണ്ട. മനുഷ്യത്വമുള്ള ഉണ്ട... ദൃശ്യഭംഗിയുടെ ഉണ്ട... മമ്മൂക്കയെ കാണിച്ചുതന്ന ഉണ്ട... ഖാലിദ് റഹ്മാന്റെ ഉണ്ട.

നബി: പശ്ചാത്തല സംഗീതമായി ഉപയോഗിച്ച ആ ഫോക്ക് സംഗീതശകലം.. ഒരു രക്ഷേമില്ലാരുന്നു. അതിലുണ്ട് ഉണ്ടയുടെ ആകെ ആത്മാവ്.

ആദ്യമായിട്ട് ഒരു സിനിമേടെ ഫസ്റ്റ് ഡേ ഫസ്റ്റ് ഷോ കാണുന്നതിന്റെ ത്രില്ലും അതോടൊപ്പം "ഉണ്ട" എന്താകും എന്നുള്ള ഉത്കണ്ഠയുമായിട്ടാണ് ഉച്ചവരെ ലീവും എടുത്ത് രാവിലെ നേരെ തിയേറ്ററിലേക്ക് വെച്ചുപിടിച്ചത്.

എന്നാൽ പടം തുടങ്ങി കുറച്ചുകഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോ തന്നെ മനസ്സിലായി ഈ "ഉണ്ട" ചീറ്റിപോവാനുള്ളതല്ല എന്ന്.
തികച്ചും റിയലസ്റ്റിക് ആയ കഥപറച്ചിലൂടെ മെഗാസ്റ്റാറിന്റെ താരപ്പകിട്ടോ മറ്റു കോലാഹലങ്ങളോ ഇല്ലാത്ത ഒരു കുഞ്ഞു ചിത്രം.

ഒരുപാട് നാളുകൾക്കു ശേഷം പേരൻപിൽ ഇക്കാടെ ഗംഭീര പ്രകടനം കണ്ടുവെങ്കിലും, മലയാളത്തിൽ ഒരു തിരിച്ചു വരവ് ഉണ്ടായില്ല എന്ന് തോന്നിയിരുന്നു.
പക്ഷെ ഇന്ന് "ഉണ്ട" കണ്ടിറങ്ങിയപ്പോൾ ആ തോന്നൽ അങ്ങ് മാറി.

ശെരിക്കും ഞാൻ എന്ന പ്രേക്ഷക വീണ്ടും കാണണം എന്ന് ആഗ്രഹിച്ചിരുന്ന അതേ മമ്മൂട്ടിയെ ആണ് ഇന്ന് കണ്ടത്.
മമ്മൂട്ടി മാത്രം അല്ല സ്‌ക്രീനിൽ വന്നുപോയ ചെറിയ, വലിയ വേഷം ചെയ്ത എല്ലാരും തന്നെ മികച്ച പ്രകടനം കാഴ്ചവെച്ചു.

ഒന്നും പറയാതെ തന്നെ ഒരുപാട് കാര്യങ്ങളും " ഉണ്ട " പ്രേക്ഷകനോട് പറയുന്നുണ്ട്.
റയലിസ്റ്റിക്കായ പടങ്ങൾ ഇഷ്ടപ്പെടുന്നവർക്കും (അല്ലാത്തവർക്കും) ധൈര്യപൂർവം ടിക്കറ്റ് എടുക്കാം, ഉണ്ട നിരാശപ്പെടുത്തില്ല.

പതിറ്റാണ്ടുകളായി നൂറുകണക്കിന് സിനിമകൾ ചെയ്ത് നൂറുകണക്കിന് അംഗീകാരങ്ങൾ വേടിച്ചിട്ടും തനിക്ക് മാത്രം ചെയ്യാൻ കഴിയുന്ന ചില വേഷങ്ങൾ ഇന്നും പിറവികൊള്ളണമെങ്കിൽ, ആ നടനെ മമ്മൂട്ടി എന്ന് വിളിക്കണം.
സിനിമാ മേഖലയിൽ ഉള്ള പലരുമായും എനിക്ക് ഉണ്ടയോടുള്ള പ്രതീക്ഷകൾ ഷെയർ ചെയ്തപ്പോഴൊക്കെ നെഗറ്റീവ് മറുപടിയായിരുന്നു കിട്ടിയതിലേറെയും (മമ്മൂക്കയുടെ അടുത്ത വൃത്തങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നുപോലും) പക്ഷേ എന്റെ പ്രതീക്ഷയുടെ ആക്കം കൂട്ടിയതും കലാപരമായി സിനിമയെ കാണാൻ അറിയാത്ത അവരുടെ വാക്കുകൾതന്നെയായിരുന്നു
അതേ, ഉണ്ട കുറേ സാധാരണ പോലീസന്മാരുടെ ജീവിതത്തിലെ അസാധാരണ കഥപറച്ചിലാകുന്നു. ഇത്രയും റിയലസ്റ്റിക്കായി full length പോലീസ് കഥപറഞ്ഞ മറ്റൊരു സിനിമ ആക്ഷൻ ഹീറോ ബിജു മാത്രമാണ് എന്റെ ഓർമ്മയിൽ..പക്ഷേ രണ്ടു സിനിമകളുടേയും സാഹചര്യം തികച്ചും വ്യത്യസ്തവുമാണ്. ഭീതിയുടെ മുൾമുനയിലും നർമ്മവും പച്ചയായ ജീവിതവും കപട രാഷ്ട്രീയവും അടിച്ചമർത്തലുമൊക്കെ അതിന്റെ മാക്സിമം സ്വാഭാവികതയിൽ വരച്ചുകാട്ടിയിട്ടുണ്ട് ഖാലിദ് റഹ്മാൻ എന്ന പ്രതിഭ മലയാള സിനിമയിലെ ഏറ്റവും മികച്ച കാസ്റ്റിങ്ങിൽ ഒന്നുകൂടിയാണ് ഈ ചിത്രം! മലയാളത്തിലെ നല്ല സിനിമയുടെ കൂട്ടത്തിൽ, മമ്മൂക്കയുടെ നല്ല സിനിമയുടെ കൂട്ടത്തിൽ ഇനിയീ ഉണ്ടയും എന്നുമുണ്ടാകുമെന്ന് ഉറപ്പ് കോമഡി കാട്ടി പേരെടുത്ത ഹരിശ്രീ അശോകൻ ചേട്ടനൊക്കെ സ്വന്തം മകന്റെ പേരിൽ അഭിമാനിക്കാം. അതുപോലെ എനിക്ക് പേരറിയാത്തവർ പോലും ജീവനുള്ള കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളായി മാറി മമ്മൂക്കയുടെ ഏത് കൂറപടങ്ങൾ വന്നാലും കഴിയുമെങ്കിൽ ആദ്യ ഷോ തന്നെ കാണുന്നത് ഇതുപോലുള്ള പടങ്ങൾ എന്നെങ്കിലും വരുമെന്ന പ്രതീക്ഷയിൽ തന്നെയാണ്...കഴിവുള്ള സിനിമാക്കാരോടൊപ്പം കൂടിയാൽ മമ്മൂക്കാ,,നിങ്ങളെ വെല്ലാൻ ഇനിയുമൊരുത്തൻ ജനിക്കേണ്ടിയിരിക്കുന്നു
