After a long gap, we get to see Mammootty in an out-and-out comedy avatar in this simple light hearted comedy entertainer Thoppil Joppan. The movie featuring Mammootty, Mamta Mohandas and Andrea in the lead roles has opened to positive responses from the audiences. Directed by Johny Antony, who has previously, helmed several other Mammootty starrer films such as ‘Thuruppugulan’, ‘Ee Pattanathil Bhootham’ and ‘Thappana’, the movie is produced by Noushad Alathur, under the banner Grande Productions. Scripted by Nishad Koya, the movie has music by Vidhya Sagar.
Thoppil Joppan revolves around the life of a middle aged Kabbadi player (Mammootty) who is obsessed with alcohol consumption after he loses his first love, Andrea. Though he is no Devdas in the film, he does find some solace in alcohol. But he is not an alcoholic. The family members and well-wishers of Joppan finally find a way to stop his drinking. This fun filled humorous life story of Joppan forms the crux of Thoppil Joppan.

Cracking memorable one-liners in the much popular achayan accent comes naturally to megastar Mammootty. Joppan is a very interesting character, which has a genuine humour touch and needless to say Mammootty has pulled off the role effortlessly. Unlike usual Superstar movies, in Thoppil Joppan both the female leads have important roles. While Andrea delivered a matured performance as Joppan ex-lover Anne, Mamta’s bubbly character Maria who is a college student, is filled with youthfulness. Apart from the three lead roles, Salim Kumar is the show stealer. The actor who appears as Fr. Isaac Vaalamparambil has made a strong comeback with this humour filled character. Supporting cast which includes Kaviyoor Ponnamma as Mother of Joppan, Renji Panicker as Fr. Jacob Anakattil, Sreejith Ravi as Aravindan, Alancier Lay as Pappichayan, and all the others have done their parts well.
Coming to the technicalities, Johny Antony-Mammootty combo has once again created magic on the screens. Despite being a humorous love track, the director has maintained the humour in a subtle way with no vulgarity. It is the kind of film you can watch with your entire family. Nishad Koya, who shot to fame with the film Ordinary, has given a sensible entertainer with an engaging realistic story. Be it the humour filled comedy sequences in the second half or the unexpected climax, the movie is highly entertaining. Cinematography by Sunoj Velayudham and cuts by Ranjan Abraham are impressive. The beauty of Idduki is very well captured in the movie. Songs composed by Vidhya Sagar needs a special mention as it had very well complimented the beauty of the realistic story. On the whole, Thoppil Joppan has a blend of comedy, love and sentiments in the right proportions.
Verdict: Thoppil Joppan - A clean family comedy entertainer. This lovable marana mass achayan will win your heart!
