In pursuit of roles with a difference

Ananyaa, making a comeback to Mollywood with ‘Tiyaan’, is looking for characters that go beyond stereotypes

As expected Ananyaa is all hush-hush about Tiyaan and her role in the movie. Directed by Jiyen Krishnakumar and scripted by Murali Gopy, news about the film has been trending ever since its trailer was released.

“I play Amba, wife of Pattabhiraman, essayed by Indrajith. A homely girl, she moves to North India with her husband. There is an inherent innocence to her. She is caught in the middle of a lot of problems, but tries to wade through it,” says Ananyaa. She is a mother too, to Arya, played by Indrajith’s daughter Nakshatra.

However, the actor can’t stop gushing about her experience on the sets of the movie. “The excitement that I felt on the first day of the shoot was there till the end. The scenes, location and the characters have not yet gone from my mind,” she says.

The actor promises that the movie will be a never-before-seen experience for Malayali viewers.

“There is novelty in the script and in the making of the film. What makes me happy is that I could be part of such a wonderful project. I had been looking forward to working with Murali chettan, having been a huge fan of his scripts. I have never done such a character as Amba. There is something unique about her expressions, mannerisms and body language. In fact, each character in the movie is distinctive,” she says.

Memorable acts

That leads us to the obvious question — why is she doing only a few films in Malayalam?

“Oh! Everyone is asking the same question. I had acted in Urumbukal Urangarilla in 2015. After that I was busy with a Telugu project A Aa for a year. That movie did extremely well at the box office. But it is also true that I have been waiting for an exciting project for long,” she says. Stressing that she wants to be part of movies that leave a lasting impact on viewers, Ananyaa says she has no qualms about admitting that she has had her share of disappointments in her career. “I feel bad that not many good characters have come my way. Although I started my career in Malayalam, the audience remembers me for my roles in other languages. People keep referring to my performances in Nadodigal or Engaeyum Eppothum. While I am happy about that, I also feel sad about not getting such memorable roles in Malayalam,” she says.

Quite excited about the changing phase of Malayalam cinema, she is quick to point out that many artistes and filmmakers prefer to stick to the same team for their projects. “They are comfortable that way and unfortunately I am not part of any such team. I have been on my own from the beginning of my career. I don’t have a manager and now it is my family — my parents and husband who help me out when needed,” she adds.

Talking about marriage, she underlines that it has never really put brakes on her career.

“Rather I have done more movies — in Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam after my marriage.” But she has a grouse — that she keeps getting characters of the same kind.



“I always get to do this hapless or homely kind of girl. Any artiste would wish for characters that are different from each other. That hasn’t happened in my case and so the only thing I can do is choose the best from among the lot,” she says.

So, how does she look at her future? “All I know is that cinema has become a passion. It was not like that when I started my career. So I am waiting for meaty roles to come my way,” she signs off. Tiyaan, which has Prithviraj, Indrajith, Padmapriya, and Murali Gopy in the cast, releases during Eid.
