'Fan': The Transformation of Shah Rukh Khan Into A Young Avatar

Transforming 50-year-old Shah Rukh Khan into a 25-year-old version of himself for the movie Fan entailed months of preparation, extensive VFX and heaps of money, according to the Bollywood superstar.

‘King’ Khan revealed the painstaking preparation for the film, in which he plays a movie star and the look-alike fan who is obsessed with him, in an interviewwith The Hindu. Written and directed by Maneesh Sharma and produced by Yash Raj Films’ Aditya Chopra, the thriller opens worldwide on April 15. The character of the fan, Gaurav, was created by a team effort: Sharma’s script, Chopra’s vision, the VFX, input from costume and makeup people and his own performance.

SRK told The Hindu, “ I don’t think anybody ever spent so much money to make me not look like Shah Rukh Khan . So much so that if you ask me about Gaurav I would say you should interview him separately. It’s all so schizophrenic and dichotomous. I don’t know what to say about him. Gaurav is a … a beast created by many people with their thoughts on what a fan should be.


“Every fan is different so everyone has given different inputs. The whole has become more than the sum of its parts. Every fan will see a part of himself or herself in Gaurav. Being a fan is a very generic, universal, normal thing.”

The actor boasts that the film will push the boundaries of VFX to a different level in India, entailing the efforts of 300 crew. He revealed it took nine months to pre-visualize one scene and eight days to shoot the scene, which is just two-and-a-half minutes long.
