A bonafide masterpiece. The sensitivity with which Ram has made his most accomplished work till date is a textbook for many celebrated filmmakers out there who pretentiously packs in those taboo topics like an issue porn. On the surface level, #Peranbu is about a harrowing account of an imperfect father's helplessness and selflessness while having to deal with a spastic child but it also touches upon various other aspects of it, which are undeniably uncomfortable, with so much earnestness. The penultimate half an hour before its rewarding conclusion is unlike anything I've seen in the way it makes you uneasy, remniscent to those disturbing moments from Sibi Malayil-Lohithadas combo's 'Chenkol' or 'Thaniyavarthanam' and Padmarajan's 'Nombarathipoovu'. Mammootty delivers a performance that only he can perfect, even now, and as always, he never ceases to make you moist eyed whenever he's at the top of his repertoire. Sadhna as the spastic daughter delivers an equally outstanding performance that immensely moves you. Anjali Ameer's character must be the best representation of a transgender character ever illustrated in Indian cinema without patronizing them for their sexual orientation, which stood out like a sore thumb in a recently released Malayalam movie centred on a transgender. Theni Easwar's alluring frames and Yuvan Shankar Raja's soul-stirring score (his best work) never lets you take your eyes off the screen. At the end of it all, the title that Ram gave, Peranbu, which actually means compassion, holds absolutely true for what the movie stands for -- in every way. Must watch, for this is the definitive coming of age movie of this decade, amidst all the tears and pain it gives you, in any language!
