http://m.behindwoods.com/tamil-movies/ivan-thanthiran/ivan-thanthiran-review.html RJ Balaji’s comedies - some of them make sense while some didn’t but, who cares? As long as it is timely and works well, it is fine. He is probably the biggest asset of all. Whenever he has been given an opportunity to talk, he scores. Another action hero role for Gautham Karthik after Rangoon and he has given what is expected from him. He does well with action scenes and sort of underplays during serious moments which suits the role. Shraddha Srinath gets a meaty role but probably her character did not have enough detailing as one would have liked. The technical department gives a functional output, nothing to complain, nothing great either. There are 2 songs scored by Thaman, one of them works, but its placement is a concern. Verdict: Good idea with a fairly engaging storytelling BEHINDWOODS REVIEW BOARD RATING ( 2.5 / 5.0 ) PUBLIC REVIEW BOARD RATING ( 3.0 / 5.0 )
Ivan Thanthiran review: A fast moving fun ride The biggest strength of Ivan Thanthiran is Kannan’s packaging. The director has taken a KV Anand kind of script and executed like KS Ravikumar. Yes, the film has pulpy brilliant moments but they are rightly packed with comic elements, cute romance, and constant thrill. Gautham Karthik looks handsome and energetic, if he continues to select good scripts like Ivan Thanthiran, a bright future is ahead for this hard working actor. However it is RJ Balaji who steals the show with his one liners and long drawn dialogues on engineering students and their plight which will get the maximum claps. Ivan Thanthiran is definitely the next level film for RJ Balaji, each and every punchline of the actor is sure to work with the audiences. Especially, Balaji’s lengthy dialogues on engineering students, auto driver’s situation after the arrival of Ola and Uber, recalling the Siddharth's dad from Aayutha Ezhuthu, bring the roof down. Shraddha Srinath is also quite good as the homely Asha, the beautiful romance in the second half is classy and the actress has pulled it off well. After Komban, Super Subbarayan once again attracts us in Ivan Thanthiran, his raw and evil look is a big plus. Technically, Ivan Thanthiran comes out with flying colors, Thaman’s Medhakavitta is already a hit and his background score raises the tempo. Cinematographer Prasanna Kumar’s angles and color tone are perfect for a commercial film and editor RK Selva has done a commendable job by making the film crisp with the running time of 121 minutes. Overall, Ivan Thanthiran is a jolly time pass entertainer with a relevant message, which will definitely create an impact among the lakhs of engineering students in Tamil Nadu. Verdict: Time pass entertainer Review : Ivan Thanthiran review: A fast moving fun ride

TAMIL CINEMA 2017 - THE FIRST HALF REPORT (Behindwoods) Half the year has flown by already and it is time for us to present the half yearly report of 2017 for Kollywood. The going has been pretty decent for Tamil cinema with some films coming up with good content. Of course the show stealer undoubtedly would be Baahubali 2 whose success story you see once in a blue moon which gave a reason to the entire Indian film industry to puff out their chests with pride. But if you remove Baahubali 2 from the equation, how has this year been for the industry? Maybe not so great. We had around 90 new Tamil releases till July which looks like an ideal number but the real concern is ⅔ of these films were removed from screens even before making a trace. Even with good content, some of the films weren’t able to click with the masses. Did big release sharks eat into the revenue of small fishes or external factors like piracy, domination of ever growing Television soap operas, IPL and Champions Trophy are to be blamed? Among the films released thus far, quite a few did good business. There were quite a few which captured the imagination of the public. We shall quickly go through the list: The ‘Sole’ Blockbuster Baahubali 2 - A lot has been spoken about this historical fantasy flick and probably it would be talked about for a very long time to come. It holds all possible records becoming the most grossing film in Tamil Nadu breaking the 7 year old record of Enthiran. Unfortunately, it is the only Blockbuster film of the year thus far. But with some biggies awaiting, can we have few films adding up to this list? The ‘HIT’ list Though quite a number of films came close to becoming a hit, only 2 of them finally made the cut according to analysis report. That would be Maanagaram and Kavan. Above average league Pa Paandi Kuttram 23 Sangili Bungili Kathava Thorae Maragatha Naanayam Thondan Average Bairavaa Si3 Sivalingaa When it comes to Average and Above Average films, some of them could have performed really well at some centers and might have been profitable too. But the cost at which they were sold and overall acceptance, they have been placed at Average and Above Average league. Critically acclaimed, commercially not so! As mentioned earlier, there are a few small budget movies with good content but due to various reasons they weren’t able to perform to their fullest potential. Kaadhal Kan Kattudhe, Nishabdam, Kadugu, 8 Thottakkal, Lens, Brindavanam, Oru Kidayin Karunai Manu and Peechaankai were all given thumbs up from the critics but not celebrated at the box office. All set for a blockbuster 2nd half with movies of all top stars set to release. Vivegam, Mersal, Velaikkaran, VIP2, TSK, Sketch and Vikram Vedha are some of the most expected of the lot”
