Did the intriguing posters of Suriya starrer 24 impress you? Here is Deepak Bhojraj, the brain behind those mind boggling designs talking to Avinash Pandian about himself and his association with the film industry.




Tell us something about yourself. Are you a designer or an editor?


I’ve worked in all Mani Ratnam’s films post Yuva but for his last release OK Kanmani.


I’m basically an ad filmmaker. I’ve directed around 40 ad films. At one point my work started to get boring and that’s when I started to cut promo videos for films. I’ve worked in all Mani Ratnam’s films post Yuva but for his last release OK Kanmani.


When you’re good at it, why not turn into a full time editor?


Recently I worked in Irudhi Suttru to fine tune the final product.


People ask me to edit films but I somehow don’t think I have the patience to cut a full film. I do help filmmakers in packaging the final output. Mostly we will give them a few suggestions and if needed I will edit a few portions. Recently I worked in Irudhi Suttru to fine tune the final product.


Your contribution in 24?


I don’t remember any films releasing these many first look posters as we did for 24.


I came up with strategies for the promotion of the film through posters and promo video cuts. To my knowledge, I don’t remember any films releasing these many first look posters as we did for 24. Thanks to the great support of fans that made all the posters go viral which gave us a fear which made us offer them more. Our initial plan was to release one poster on the 24 th of every month starting from November. Then the poster counts kept adding on for other promotional activities like the teaser and audio release announcements. I also worked on the teaser, trailer and the promo videos of 24.


Working experience with Mani Ratnam?


Associating with people like Mani Ratnam and Vikram is very inspiring


He is someone who doesn’t force you to do things but gives you the freedom to come up with different ideas. Same with Vikram Kumar. I have worked with him in Manam before. Associating with people like Mani Ratnam and Vikram is very inspiring. On seeing their work, you would always want to do something special to excite them and that is how they extract good work.


About your process of teaser and trailer cuts? Do you get to watch the entire film well in advance to cut the teaser?


All the trailers I have cut will have a story by itself.


Luckily yes! We are among first few people who get to watch the entire movie. Cutting a film’s teaser and trailer is a very exciting job. I keep thinking a lot and then try to come up with a story for the trailer. All the trailers I have cut will have a story by itself.


About your designs? Do you have a web portfolio to display your works?


I have my own studio set up at Ooty where I do all my photo-shoots.


We have been doing promotional poster designs for films from Nootrenbadhu with the passion to do something unique every single time. So far, we have been getting projects only based on acquaintance. But now a lot of people are asking us to have our own website, we have a thought of making a website. I have my own studio set up at Ooty where I do all my photo-shoots. The much talked about 24 posters were all shot at a studio by G Venkat Ram and the designs were done in my studio in Ooty.


The eagle that is semi-hidden in one of the posters that features Athreya. Is the eagle part of the script? If yes, does it have a name?


The eagle has a significant role in the film


Not just the eagle, there are many things that are subtly told if you look at the posters. Everything shown in the posters will have a connect to the film and nothing has been added to ornament the output. Coming back to the eagle, yes, the eagle has a significant role in the film but I cannot reveal anything more about at this point. You will find yourself in a few days from now.


Mani, one of the characters that Suriya plays looks to be a watch mechanic but he is shown as a pilot in a one of the posters?


Nothing has been done to deceive the audience


Like I said earlier, nothing has been done to deceive the audience. If we are adding something that doesn’t feature in the film means we are cheating the audience and making them expect something they are not going to witness.


About the equations shown in the title card? Are these just random equations or does it carry any meaning?


They are time travel equations


When I was discussing about 24 script with Vikram, we wanted to come up with a fresh concept for the title design. We kept thinking about it for a long time and that is when this equation concept tapped my mind. They are time travel equations. Stephen Hawking has in fact written a book about time travel equations which was one of our inspirations to use it for the title card


Directorial plans?


I’ll direct a film for sure.


Definitely yes, I came to the industry to become a feature film director. I’m working on scripts and when the right time comes, I’ll direct a film for sure.

 

Kollywood’s audiences have always been critical about the performance of the villain. There have always been times when villains won the hearts of the people through their performances.

Thani Oruvan’s Siddharth Abimanyu, Yennai Arindhaal’s Victor, Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu’s Ila are some names that come to mind immediately. There have also been occasions when our favourite heroes played the villain. There have also been times when our favourite heroes played both the hero and villain roles in the same film. Ajith in Vaali, Vijay in Azhagiya Tamil Magan, Kamal in Aalavandhan are all performances that spelled EPIC to us.

Suriya’s countenance as the antagonist Athreya in 24 is the recent addition to this list. This is also the first time Suriya has played the antagonist. What is visually proved is the fact that Suriya has taken lots of efforts to play this role. For example the makeup he is wearing for the Athreya character if not removed carefully, would have resulted in his skin peeling off. No doubt Athreya is somebody we have to ‘watch’ out for.
