    • Bajirao Mastani, Padmaavat and War, will be making his Mollywood debut through Mammootty’s upcoming magnum opus Mamangam. Sanchit, along with his brother Ankit, have composed the score of the Malayalam film, which is set to hit theatres on November 21. In conversation with award-winning composer Sanchit Balhara:

How has it been working on a movie like Mamangam?
What a way to debut in the South film industry! I have always been fascinated by the greats in the Malayalam film industry. Incidentally, my initial projects in Bollywood too had been in period films. Mamangam was different because it also had elements of fantasy mixed with realism. That was something new for me compared to my other historical films. It also gave me the liberty to take my music beyond the period.
Also, the team has been wonderful. They behave like friends, rather than director and producer. Every time I speak to them, they are collaborative. For instance, I am not from Kerala and so have had problems with the language and understanding the intent of the emotion for the score. But they have been extremely patient and explained to me everything in detail. So, I totally enjoyed the work.

The movie, apart from having epic war sequences, is also an emotional drama at its core. Having worked in movies such as Bajirao Mastani and Padmaavat, do you think emotions play a big role in Indian historical films?

I think that is the case for any genre of cinema. If you take out emotions, a film will just be a sequence. If the action must have any impact, there needs to be emotions attached to the characters. A film like Mamangam is dominantly an emotional film even though it has two massive action sequences. It’s more of a dramatic action film. This helps a lot while scoring because you get to know the characters and the intent of their reactions as to why they are waging a war.

How long did it take you to score music for the film?

The film’s executive producer approached me earlier this year, but they weren’t done with the shoot then. So, he had given me a brief idea about the project. I was also working with other projects. Later, I started making a sketch on what I thought would eventually come out. When they were finally locked with the edit, that’s when I started full-fledged work. A film like Mamangam keeps evolving and requires a different treatment.

You must be one of the first few who has seen the edited version of the film. What is your take on it?

The best part was that I watched the film without any temporary music, which frankly I think is a wrong practice. So, the director wanted me to have a fresh perspective. Also, the movie looked great without any music, so adding the score I thought would only take it to another level.
What was the most challenging task of scoring music for a movie like this?

It’s kind of inspiring, getting to know a different culture and adding a new flavour to my music repertoire. When you do a few films, you sort of make your identity through them. So, when you get to do a project like this, you get to learn something new and add another element to your music
