How long will John Abraham, arguably one of Bollywood’s most good looking men, wing it by just looking brooding and steely?

His smouldering looks and his surly attitude form the spine of his latest role as police officer Kabir in the action drama Dishoom. He’s the kind of man who smokes in an elevator, puts an unsuspecting man’s life at risk and kicks the poor guy out for asking him to stub it out.

That’s his introductory scene, and his slow-motion walk after kicking the poor guy was contrived to underline how cool, maverick and reckless Kabir is. In another scene, he smoked a cigarette near an aircraft. Note to the Dishoom team: there’s nothing remotely cool about blowing smoke into people’s faces and, dude, such stupidity is going to just blow up your handsome face.

And how long will Varun Dhawan get by with playing an adorable, bumbling underdog? In his brother’s directorial vehicle, Dhawan gives Birdman — the cute British Bulldog who is instrumental in cracking the kidnapping drama — a run for his money. We have seen him do the same thing in several romantic comedies such asHumpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, Dilwale andMain Tera Hero — and it’s getting old. Seriously.

Dishoom is about two police officers tasked with solving an important kidnapping case. Indian cricketer Viraj Sharma (Saqib Saleem) has been abducted before an important India-Pakistan match by a scheming bookie (Akshaye Khanna). The criminal wants the celebrated batsman to throw the game and buy into his match-fixing dreams. It doesn’t take much to figure out his evil plans, but Kabir and Junaid (Dhawan) take a long time to track him down. Their investigation leads them to an underground Middle Eastern city, a harem and burly men.

While the first half is engaging, the second half is ridden with cliches and corny twists. A sight for the sore eyes was the bromance. As far as buddy-cops go, they are cute together. They have an impish charm about them, but it’s painfully predictable. What holds up Dishoom, filmed extensively in the UAE, are the two A’s: action and Abu Dhabi.

It’s exhilarating to watch the two men hang off helicopters, ram into an FJ Cruiser, pluck the villain out of it and then threaten to drop him into the ocean. It’s neatly done. Bravo boys, take a bow. Abu Dhabi looks like a swanky, futuristic metropolis studded with glistening skyscrapers. Although Dishoomidentifies the city as “somewhere in the Middle East”, there’s no escaping its glorious landmarks. For a UAE resident, the swish scenes may evoke a sense of reflected pride. But we wish the makers of the film had gone easy on the blatant brand promotions that keep cropping up in important scenes.

    How’d she do that?

Jacqueline Fernandez is on call to look fashionable and feisty. She plays Ishika, a recovering drug addict who pickpockets for a living. If that didn’t make you scoff, she also claims that she can help Kabir and Junaid get entry into a dangerous Middle Eastern city filled with thugs and dagger-toting men. How she got those skills and resources isn’t answered in this film. And did I tell you, that she can dance like a dream, too?

Stereotypes attached to the Middle East are brought alive in the second half of the movie as the police duo’s murky investigation leads to an ancient Arab city. Think sandy markets with dagger-wielding men in turbans, underground harems, lions in the backyards and camels roaming freely. Fortunately, those sequences are swift and the two men are back to their stylish selves in a jiffy.

Saleem and Khanna were given limited scope to perform, but they manage to slide by. The focus is on Abraham and Dhawan, the two swashbuckling heroes. But it would have been great if there was more to them than just style and swagger.

John Abraham and Varun Dhawan’s buddy-cop film is mainly about flashy landscapes and elaborately planned action sequences. A big part of the action takes place in West Asia where these two are on a rescue mission. The film features Jacqueline Fernandez and Akshay Khanna in pivotal roles and Akshay Kumar makes a cameo in the movie.

India’s top batsman Viraj (Saqib Saleem) is kidnapped right before an important India-Pakistan match, and he has to be rescued in time. Otherwise it may end up in soured bilateral ties between the neighbours.

Director Rohit Dhawan has tried his best to keep the entertainment quotient high by inserting songs and high-speed chases at regular intervals. But, he hasn’t hesitated in reinstating clichés. So, it may look like a rehash of popular Hollywood cop films.

Dishoom had a good to decent start on day one with some pockets seeing a good opening while others were on the lower side. The occupancy is around 30% which is lower than what Baaghi opened earlier this year. The film had real potential to open big considering the genre and Varun Dhawan coming off a career best ABCD 2 but with this masala genre and a young star a love story is a must and though there may be a love story in the film, the promos have not portrayed. The opening is better in mass centres due to the action but it could have been better even there, the metro multiplexes were generally pretty low.

The film has been released on around 3000 screens so that should push it to a reasonable day one but it is going to be about the trajectory of growth at multiplexes on Saturday and they have a lot of scope to pick up if the content is there from this sort of start. Basically they will have to pick up, a Baaghi pulls through on single screens and multiplexes of B and C centres because the film opened strong in these places and was less costly. Here the opening in mass is not as strong and the film is also more costly so those big multiplexes have to show growth. The opening is best in UP, Gujarat and Rajasthan with the film being hit by Kabali in the South which has dropped but still retaining the best single screens so its mainly multiplexes for Dishoom.

A plus for Dishoom is that both last week releases Kabali (Hindi) and Madaari are practically gone and Sultan is also down to 2-3 shows at most multiplexes. This does leave the field open for Dishoom but it will have to find appreciation. The other releases of the week like Love Ke Funday, Mission Tiger and Murder Madhuri have little hope at the box office.

There will be competition in Punjab as the Punjabi film Bambukat has opened well there though the opening in Delhi was not good.

Dishoom had a fair opening day grossing around 11 crore nett as per early estimates on day one. The figures are around 1 crore nett less than Baaghi but did manage to score over that film in a few of circuits like East Punjab and possibly Delhi / UP and Mumbai but all others are coming out lower as Baaghi took a very good opening in mass circuits while this is just good. Varun Dhawan's last film had ABCD 2 opened to 14.28 crore last year and this is much lower. We can compare with John Abraham's last film Rocky Handsome which was just 5.19 crore nett but Dishoom is a Varun Dhawan driven film.

The opening should have been better but its still not that bad giving the film some sort to platform from where it can build on. It will be about the growth over the weekend and Saturday and Sunday will have to grow well. It will be interesting to see what growth it can gather on Saturday as Gujarat, Rajasthan and CPCI have recorded pretty decent numbers on day one and these areas find it hard to grow especially for this genre. The growth is going to have to come from the big multiplexes of Delhi NCR, Punjab and Mumbai and it will have to be substantial to counteract the less growth in other areas. The East Punjab circuit probably lost around 20-25 lakhs nett as a Punjabi film Bambukat scored very well on its opening day..

The new Hollywood releases today like The BFG and Ghostbusters have fared very poorly as they struggle for 50 lakhs nett on day one.

Dishoom grossed a decent 11 crore nett on day one giving it the sixth best opening of the year after Sultan, Fan, Housefull 3, Baaghi and Airlift. Its a decent number especially if the film can improve well on Saturday and Sunday which is a must as without solid growth on both Saturday and Sunday it won't go far. The film was on the lower side in metro multiplexes though it was better than Baaghi in the metros but could not compare in the tier 2 and 3 cities with that film despite doing doing pretty well itself. The Punjabi film hit in East Punjab more than enough so collections stayed below the Airlift opening day numbers.

The film grossed 3.50 crore nett apprx in Mumbai, 2.25 crore nett apprx in Delhi / UP and 1.10 crore nett apprx in East Punjab. The film will be have to be driven by these areas in terms of growth especially on Saturday.

Top Opening Days Nadiadwala Grandsons Pvt Ltd can be see here. Dishoom is the sixth highest opener for the studio. Kick leads.

Top Opening Days Varun Dhawan can be see here. Dishoom is the third highest opener with Dilwale leading though that was a Shahrukh Khan film and ABCD 2 is next best.

Top Opening Days John Abraham can be seen here. Dishoom is fourth with Race 2 leading at the top

The other releases like Love Ke Fundey, Mission Tigers, Murder Madhuri were as expected with little or no collections.
