With three consecutive hits, the blues seem to finally be over in Kollywood

Kollywood can heave a sigh of relief as three films that released in November — Aval, Aramm and Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru have turned out to be successful at the box office. All three films have grossed over ₹10 crore from the Tamil Nadu market (at the time of writing), with Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru doing it in its opening weekend.

This happened despite heavy rains in the key collection areas of Chennai city and Chengalpet and new ticket rates. The trade feels that these films worked despite all odds, due to the quality of their content, positive feedback and rave reviews.

Siddharth’s Milind Rau-directed Aval was the first to hit the screens on November 3. It was not the usual horror movie, and this was helped by the fact that it virtually got a solo release. Aval, a pure horror film without the mandatory horror-comedy tag, also found takers in the B and C markets. And it withstood the pressure in its second weekend from stiff competition and went on to become profitable for its buyers.

On November 10, Nayanthara’s realistic socio-political drama, Aramm, had a lukewarm opening due to the rains. But the social media’s word of mouth and rave reviews helped it pick up from day two. Nayanthara’s unusual promotional theatre visits in Chennai city and Chengalpet areas further helped the film to consolidate, with a strong showing in the second weekend. The film may end up with a Tamil Nadu distributor’s share between ₹3 to 4 crore, which is very good for a female-centric film without any commercial trappings. And with the market leader Sun TV picking up its digital and satellite rights, it’s a winner, further cementing Nayanthara’s position as a formidable star.

Karthi’s H Vinoth-directed Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru, a realistic cop story, is another big winner in November. The story, etched from police diaries, took a soft opening on its release day — November 17. But by night shows, the film’s collection took off, as a result of positive word of mouth and reviews.

SR Prabhu of Dream Warrior Pictures, one of the producers of the film, says: “Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru is a hit due to its content and release date. We knew the importance of word of mouth, and that’s why we had a première show for celebrities and the media. The Telugu version Khakee is also a hit.”

The film is reported to have grossed approximately around ₹11 crore in its opening weekend from Tamil Nadu theatricals.

The success of the three November films clearly shows the influence of social media and the relevance of reviews. A spokesperson of a ticket booking platform says, “Aval, Aramm and now Theeran... prove that people book for movies depending on tweets and reviews posted on the Internet. Only after the Friday noon show did we see a surge in online bookings, and that is indicative of how the audience wait for feedback to plan their weekends.”

The Tamil film trade is relieved that despite rains, the three November releases worked (mainly in the 3Cs — Chennai, Chengalpet and Coimbatore) in reviving the box office. The higher ticket rates are still a bit of a dampener in price-conscious B and C markets, where superstar movies continue to rule. The buzz is that for small content-oriented films, the budget should be further trimmed and target the 3C audiences, followed by immediate digital release. All the three November hits will be on digital platforms in under seven weeks of their theatre release. Reducing the number of days between the theatre release window and a premiere on streaming sites is the future.
