The phenomenal run of the Uncharted franchise continues, and A Thief's End may just be the series' finest hour
After nearly ten years, the ballad of Nathan Drake comes to an end. It’s not easy to wrap up the story of one of the most iconic PlayStation characters of all time, but Naughty Dog does so with much aplomb.
Even if Uncharted 4 is your first game in the series, the plot isn’t too convoluted to follow. It’s a treasure hunt with twists, turns and betrayals peppered across the way for good measure. You may, however, not be able to appreciate the nods to the previous games, or the slow burn approach the first half of the game takes. But after a few hours of exposition, you’ll be thrown into hairy firefights, extremely impressive set-pieces, and a lot of exploration amidst the most gorgeous visuals you’ve ever experienced in a game till date.

There is no denying that Uncharted 4 is one gorgeous game. In fact, I’d go as far as saying as it’s the best looking game on the PS4 till date. Combine this with stellar animations and insanely detailed character models, and there will be times when your mind won’t be able to process the fact that you’re actually playing a game. And this is when Uncharted 4 shines.

The interaction between characters, the playful banter across the way, it’s all extremely enjoyable... till you’re hit smack across the face with some of the game’s annoyances.

For starters, combat in Uncharted 4 still feels a bit weak. Gunplay isn’t as tight and responsive as other third-person shooters, and enemies are bullet sponges, while Drake goes down way too easily easily in a few shots. Thankfully, the time around, stealth is a viable option in almost every encounter.

You’ll have a multitude of options to choose from, and this is the one thing that makes firefights feel fresh. However, towards the end, you’ll still have to face wave after wave of heavily armoured enemies, and this really sucks some of that fun right out.

Between enemy encounters, you’ll spend most of your time exploring ruins, caves, pirate coves, pirate ships, etc, and thanks to a nifty new rope mechanic, Drake can smoothly traverse the game world, exploring every nook and cranny before moving onto the next one.

Exploring these ruins is what really stood out for me, except for when I had to constantly hunt for crates to climb onto higher ledges. Plus, there are times when the game isn’t clear on where you have to go, and you’ll waste minutes running around the place till a scripted event kicks in through your AI partner (him boosting you or vice versa).

After the single-player campaign (that does drag on a bit toward the end), you can move onto the game’s multiplayer, which is rather enjoyable. All the traversal mechanics make their way into multiplayer as well, and it’s a lot of fun swinging and climbing when there are other human players in the mix.

You have three multiplayer modes, along with one Trials mode that doubles up as a tutorial of sorts, taking you through various game modes and the power ups you’ll be able to use in-game. Once you’re done with the campaign, this will be your bread and butter until new single player content comes out next year.

Minor issues aside, Uncharted 4 remains one of the best action-adventure games on the PS4, and is a near perfect send off for Nathan Drake, but it falls just short of being a true masterpiece.

‘Batman: Return to Arkham’ Trailer Heralds Remastered Video Game Franchise

Now’s the perfect time to return to Arkham. Ben Affleck’s Batman was introduced inBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ahead of his appearance in next year’sJustice League: Part One and the inevitable solo Batman film. On top of everything going on in the DCEU, there’s the animated movie adaption of The Killing Joke, featuring Mark Hamill’s Joker. Amid all this hype comes the announcement trailer forBatman: Return to Arkham, which is a re-release of two classic DC video games.

Revealed today, Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City are getting remastered — including all the DLCs ever released, according to the trailer — in a new video game bundle dubbed Return to Arkham. Pre-orders are available now viaBatmanReturnToArkham.com for PS4 and Xbox One users. Watch the announcement below:

Released in 2009, Arkham Asylum sees the Joker (voiced by Hamill) unleashing the inmates of Gotham City’s madhouse for the sadistically insane, leaving The Dark Knight himself to wrangle them all up again. Arkham City, which debuted in 2012, built off this world by featuring a maximum security “home” from which the game gets its name. Located in the heart of Gotham, the setting held all of the city’s most ruthless and psychotic criminals.

It’s a great way for veteran fans of the games to see them in a new, more hi-res light, while complete newbies can experience the stories for the first time on the latest gaming consoles. Comic book lovers may still fuel the debate over Marvel vs. DC, but the latter has always held dominance over video games. In fact, seeing glimpses into these updated versions makes me wish Marvel stuck with that Avengers first-person fighter that never came to be.

Hamill will next reprise his voice role of the Joker for Batman: The Killing Joke, which will be rated R and release its deluxe edition and Blu-ray combo packs on August 2nd with a Digital HD copies dropping July 23rd.
