M.S. Dhoni - The Untold Story has had an excellent first day with collections set to be around 20-21 crore nett as per early estimates in the Hindi version. There is a dubbed version in Tamil and Telugu and that has also done very well. It is likely to be the second highest opening of the year behind Sultan (36.59 crore) but beating Fan (19.07 crore) and also the likes of Housefull 3 and Rustom by big margins. The collections of the film are also likely to come among the top fifteen opening days ever and as far as non holidays go it will be in fifth or sixth place. The public especially the youth have come in a big way on the opening day across the country. The multiplex business is fantastic while single screens have also performed well.


The film has under performed slightly in the North compared to a Mumbai and South and that could be due to the cast as the Delhi and Punjab belts tend to open better with a big star or if its local content. Brand Dhoni has given the film a blockbuster start and now its about can the film hold which will take the film to safety despite the high cost. It will be interesting to see what happens over the weekend as never before has a film taken such a big opening on an external factor (Brand Dhoni) and with the cast being so weak.The theatrical was also good which gave it a further boost and now remains to be seen if the expectations created have been matched by the film and that will be known over the next few days.

M.S. Dhoni - The Untold Story had a huge first day grossing around 20 crore nett in Hindi making it the second highest opening day of the year. The film did phenomenally well over due though the under performance came in North India where the cast factor probably came into play. The film has done fantastic business in Mumbai and South while the Central India markets (Rajasthan, CP Berar, CI) also contributed very well due to the small town fell of the film. The cricket factor aided the film in markets like Mysore and West Bengal. The film is Mysore has collected almost the same as what it has in Delhi city and East Punjab while for a film a like Sultan the numbers are double in Delhi city and East Punjab as compared to Mysore. East Punjab had a Punjabi film for competition which has done well.






The Dhoni brand and the theatrical having a very earthy and Indian feel to it has contributed to this huge first day number and now the film just has to hold at these levels to be a big success. The film can probably afford to even have a drop on day two but that will hit the trend of the film which will hurt the eventual lifetime total of the film. If the film was to go up on Saturday then the film will be able to go anywhere considering the limited number of major releases till Diwali. Never has a film with no face value and so so music taken such an initial in recent times, the theatrical was good which suggested a good opening but brand Dhoni took it to another level all together.



M.S. Dhoni - The Untold Story grossed around 6.50 crore nett in Mumbai, 3.50 crore nett in Delhi /UP, 1.65 crore nett in East Punjab and 1.55 crore nett in Mysore. Barring Delhi / UP, East Punjab, West Bengal, the figures were the second highest of the year in all other circuits.

M.S. Dhoni - The Untold Story has taken the 15th highest opening of all time and all the films above it are all cast films. In terms of non holidays there are five films above it and they are Dhoom 3, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, PK, Kick and Dilwale making it the sixth highest non holiday opening day. It shows that a story on a popular figure of the present time can have huge interest among the public but obviously the film has to also look good through the trailer. The Dhoni factor has overridden the cast factor as far as box office is concerned and that too by a huge margin. The top opening days of all time are as follows..
