Bollywood fans know him as the handsome hunk who acted in Rani Mukherji’s kitschy Aiyyaa. But there is more to this actor who turns 36 today than just a handful of movies in Bollywood. He has acted in over 80 films in Malayalam and has been bestowed with multiple state film awards for his performance. He started his career in 2002 and today, has made a place for himself as performer.He was also one of the first person in the industry to stand up and say that he will not be a part of films that objectify women or makes light of sexism.

He has also pushed the envelope and been a part of films where he played antagonist. He was, in fact,cast as a villain in his Tamil debut movie. He was also a part of the production company August Cinemas, he has sung many songs over the years for film, and will soon be donning the hat of a director with Mohanlal playing the lead role. Be it his career in the film industry, or his filmography, there are many shades to this man. Here are a list of must-watch films that had him playing some interesting and passionate roles.

Classmates (2006) / Ninaithale Inikkum (2009)


Classmates is a Malayalam movie written by James Albert and directed by Lal Jose, the film also stars Narain, Jayasurya, Kavya Madhavan and others. It is about these actors playing the role of college classmates who have grown apart after graduation and how a reunion reveals something sinister that happened while they were in college.

Satham Podathey / Kelkaatha Shabdam 2007


This Tamil movie also starring Padmapriya and Nithiin Sathya is a crime thriller that dealt with domestic violence and mental abuse. Prithviraj plays the role of a man who falls in love with a survivor of mental abuse and how his decision leads to Padmapriya’s character getting kidnapped is the crux of the story. Directed by Vasanth, the movie was based on a true incident.

Celluloid - 2013





Celluloid, a biopic of JC Daniel, the father of Malayalam film industry had Prithviraj playing the role of Daniel. The film also starring Sreenivasan, Mamta Mohandas, and Chandni Geetha received the National Best Film Award for the year. This film depicted what happened after the release of first ever Malayalam movie at Capitol Theatre in Thiruvananthapuram on November 7, 1928. The film, which had a socially relevant message was shunned by orthodox community in Kerala because they did not like the a fact that a dalit girl played the role of a Nair woman in the film. Directed by Kamal, the film fetched Prithviraj the State Film Award for Best Actor.

Kaaviya Thalaivan - 2014


Directed by Vasanthbalan, the film is a historical fiction about a drama company and its two leading men played by Prithviraj and Siddharth. While Prithviraj’s character, Melachivilberi Gomathinayagam Pillai, is dedicated and hardworking, Siddharth’s character, Thalaivankottai Kaliappa Bhagavathar was talented and gained audience love for performance and creativity. In this film, Bhagavathar is the antagonist and Kaliappa is the leading man who falls in love with a princess. How Bhagavathar brought the fall of Kaliappa to enjoy the spotlight and how the latter reacted when he got to know about this is the story. With great music by AR Rahman, this film is one of the most memorable ones of Prithviraj.

Ennu Ninte Moideen - 2015


Ennu Ninte Moideen, directed by RS Vimal, is inspired by a true story. Kanchanamala and Moideen’s love story was enacted by Prithviraj and Parvathy Menon beautifully. The film is about love over caste and how the couple decided to stay apart for years before they thought of beginning a life together (thanks to Kanchana Mala’s siblings, who were waiting to be married) is no lesser than a romantic epic. On screen, the chemistry between the actors and their individual performances were stunning. So much so, it left the audience in tears.

The above five happen to be my personal favourites. However, if you were interested in watching more of his works, his other films like the recently released Tiyaan (Indian Rupee), Ravanan, Urumi, Ayalum Njanum Thammil, Kadhal Konden and Chocolate are also good.
