Superstar Rajnikanth, who scored a massive hit with Kabali is currently cooling off in his Chennai house. During this much needed break, Rajni has taken some time off and has watched a special screening of the Mohan Lal starrer Oppam.

As soon as the film wrapped up, Rajni had some very good words to say about Mohan Lal and his sincere performance. Oppam is a crime thriller which has released all over.

Directed by Priyadarshan, this film has Mohan Lal playing a blind man’s role.

 

Young Tiger NTR and Mohan Lal shared screen space in the recently released blockbuster ‘Janatha Garage’. The movie brought these two talented actors close and they have bonded well.

Mohan Lal’s latest film ‘Oppam’ released today to superb reviews. The movie is expected to do well and sources say that NTR called up Mohan Lal to wish the actor on the success.

The movie ‘Janatha Garage’ was well received in Kerala as well and NTR has successfully opened a new market for himself in the beautiful state.

OPPAM: The most enchanting aspect of watching a Mohanlal – Priyadarshan flick in a theatre, is how one gets to witness an audience brimming with vehement anticipation. Agreed, there have been movies which let us down, but the very fact that the duo has created several memorable gems over the years has kept their lustre intact. In Oppam, you get to see why you as a viewer should never ever give up on their match made in heaven. A slick crime thriller with a fervent screenplay has always been the perfect recipe to draw viewership, and that’s exactly what we get from Priyadarshan this time around. Finally!!!

Jayaraman is born as a blind man, with heightened senses of smell, sound and touch, owing to his practice of Kalari. He works as a lift operator in an apartment complex, wherein we are introduced to the primary set of characters. He also acts as a keeper to Justice Krishnamoorthy, a resident in the flat, whose past deeds are still haunting him through Vasudevan, whom he had sentence to life imprisonment for a crime he had not committed. Krishnamoorthy in fact has entrusted this blind man to act as a guardian to her daughter, Nandini, who is a school student. Events take a turn when Krishnamoorthy is found murdered in his apartment, and fingers start to point against Jayaraman who turns out to be the primary witness and eventual suspect. Jayaraman’s trail of the real killer amidst the slurry of accusations is quite evidently the story henceforth. What’s almost astonishing is Priyadarshan’s ability to fit in some genuinely laugh out loud moments among the tense events pertaining. He undoubtedly proves that he is a connoisseur at that art with deft use of some well-cast supporting actors.

I am at a loss for eulogies for the great man! Lalettan has been exceptional in his portrayal as the blind Jayaraman. His acting has drifted away from commonplace depiction of the average blind man. Instead we are made to relate to the character’s other enhanced senses through his rendering. Samuthirakani has done more than justice to the role of Vasudevan, wherein his penchant to depict emotionally restrained characters has been brought to the fore. Meenakshi of Amar Akbar Antony fame has bettered herself in her portrayal of Nandini, and is definitely a bright prospect for Malayalam cinema.Nedumudi Venu, Chemban Vinod Jose, andAnusree were the other pillars that hold the film together with some real performances. Mamukkoya and Harish K. R. provide the occasional slapstick amusements, with their precise comic timing. N. K. Ekambaram’s camerawork has shown much improved perspective shots, and the essential aerial views to cover the picturesque locales of Vagamon, Ooty, and Idukki. Newcomers, 4 Musics band, have rendered soulful music and a handful of melody numbers. The editing though was not at par when you consider the other elements, most notably in the song ‘Minaminunge’. Among all these factors, the distinctive component that elevates the movie is Priyan’s meticulous approach in writing Govind Vijayan’s solid story for the screen. In that sense, I believe the veteran director has been sort of underrated over the years. It has its flaws in some dragged out sequences, but yet the relieving part is that whenever you start to get tired of scene, you are immediately treated to an overwhelmingly impressive succeeding sequence.

At over 150 minutes long, one could argue it’s a rather lengthy affair, but still you never see a digression from the plot throughout the feature. As my father had aptly put after watching the film, when two masters of their art combine, a master piece is created. It might be an slight overstatement, yet one cannot deny the fact thatOppam is honest effort, with all the essentials, to deliver good solid cinema. I had a soliloquy running through my head as I entered the cinema, “Go Ahead! Make my Day!” – courtesy Dirty Harry, and how they did and elegantly so. Thank you Mohanlaland Priyadarshan for Oppam ! We hope you continue to wow us for years to come!
